Defense: From solid to star

Five Alabama defenders who need to take their games to another level in 2013 ...

  • Belue and Geno Smith better be ready next year...the front seven will be fine. The safeties will be fine. The corners have me worried, but we'll be nasty on defense, regardless.

  • You think the (presumed) loss of someone like Eddie Williams puts more pressure on a HaHa to be better and make up for the loss of depth at DB?

  • great article travis thanks. I really feel Pagan is going to do something special this year, you always knew he was on the field simply because he seemed to tower over everyone else. The kid is massive! can't wait to see what he can do as a starter.
Wasn't he used primarily in the "rabbit" pass rush situations?

It might affect depth some, but I don't think the loss of Williams will affect Clinton-Dix at all. He's the best safety UA has coming back. Williams would have started spring behind C-D, Perry, Sunseri, Collins and J. Williams. Might provide some clarity on where a guy like ArDarius Stewart starts out at in the fall.

Think Ha-Ha is headed to another level, the loss of Williams presumably puts pressure on the Tide to find depth. However, I'm not sure he was even penciled in to the rotation. The last time I spoke with those close to the program he was being moved to wide receiver. That was mid season, but it still tells somewhat of a story regarding his development. Fortunately, safety is a position that Alabama has some solid depth, plus by all accounts Stewart has the physical gifts and mental makeup to be major talent.

He pretty much provided depth in all packages. I think he's one of this team's top 10 NFL prospects. Isn't limited to a particular position. Can play five-tech end (3-4) or three-tech DT (4-3).

That was going to be the on-going question with Williams: other than specials, where can you get him on the field? Doesn't have stretch-the-field speed at WR and not sure he would have been trusted enough to play safety.

In terms of TFLs and sacks, I could see that being the case. Stinson gets overlooked in that regard.

Oh lord don't say that!!...you get crucified around here if you say anything negative about Belue. I agree he will need to be MUCH better this year or our secondary will get torched. I think Geno will have passed him ability wise by the time fall gets here.

For a juco transfer, I thought Belue was pretty good last season. With Milliner on the other side, you knew teams (other than Michigan and Notre Dame, anyway) would go after Belue a good bit and I thought he held up well. He needs to get a little bigger and stronger but I think he'll be very good in coverage in 2013.

  • Travis, IMO there is a big gap between your #1, Hubbard, and your #2...I think a guy that's started every game for us last year has a real shot at being passed by more than one guy...thoughts?

Didn't really rank them in any order; just how they sort of how they came to mind. As for DePriest, there will be competition, no doubt, but as it sits right now, I think he'll be on the field at the start of the Virginia Tech game. Plenty of physical talent behind him, but plenty of learning still going on too.

  • Lets not forget about the other Williams when talking about safety depth. Jarrick has looked good in his UA career to date, and should be 100% heading into the spring.
