Defense: From solid to star

great article travis thanks. I really feel Pagan is going to do something special this year, you always knew he was on the field simply because he seemed to tower over everyone else. The kid is massive! can't wait to see what he can do as a starter. Wasn't he used primarily in the "rabbit" pass rush situations?

I'm with you on Pagan...I think once the light turns on he will be dominant...and fearsome!

  • Take it for what it's worth (and right now that appears to be just about nothing), but I talked with Williams at the national championship media day and was planning to do an upcoming story on what's going at safety and he said he was concentrating on free safety.

"Nah. Not right now at least," he said.

He gave a lot of credit to Robert Lester for helping him get things down and he was hoping to challenge for the open starting job (although the guess here was that he would have backed up Clinton-Dix this season):

"At first it was very hard, trying to learn a whole other playbook, especially the Alabama playbook on defense. It was a struggle at first, but as time went on I made a lot of progress."

  • Great thread!

I'm excited to see what HaHa can do this year. He really came on strong at the end of the season with an INT in each of his last 3 games including that acrobatic one against ND. If Collins has progressed enough in his knowledge of his position then we could have a deadly S combo because we all know how Collins is a superior athlete. Like most of you I'm also eager to see what Pagan can do in a starting role.

If Belue and Geno continue to progress then I don't think we'll have a legitimate worry on our entire defense. Should be another nasty unit that ranks among CFB's best. And then there's the offense which should be extremely weapony.

  • I haven't seen anyone mention Ryan Anderson. Wasn't he a 5-star LB prospect last class? Also, what about Dillon Lee? I know Anderson redshirted last year, so I'll be interested to see how he plays this spring.

Think Ha-Ha is headed to another level, the loss of Williams presumably puts pressure on the Tide to find depth. However, I'm not sure he was even penciled in to the rotation. The last time I spoke with those close to the program he was being moved to wide receiver. That was mid season, but it still tells somewhat of a story regarding his development. Fortunately, safety is a position that Alabama has some solid depth, plus by all accounts Stewart has the physical gifts and mental makeup to be major talent.

This opens the door for Jai Miller to make a statement.

Agreed on Pagan. Pagan and Fanning on the inside could be a fearsome pair in the 4 man front.

You think the (presumed) loss of someone like Eddie Williams puts more pressure on a HaHa to be better and make up for the loss of depth at DB?

    not really,
Dix is a starter and imo Sunseri,Collins,& Jarrick Williams were all going to play before EW on the 2 deep.

question at hand now is will Jai Miller push for Perry's minutes ?

  • Travis, great article as always but IMHO...
    CB,NT, and C are the 3 biggest area's in question for 2013.

You're probably right but the article wasn't about position needs. It was about defensive players who should be ready to become all-conference type performers in 2013.

we were just a year ahead of schedule wiwth our expectations IMO. he came on nicely last year after his slow start. i expect 2013 to be what we hoped for in 2012 from him...8-12 sacks hopefully

    He had 7 in 2012.

Yep...this happens every year with some player or players. Depriest is a good example after his freshmen year. People had high hopes for him last year. & it wasn't as good as expected.

he was also hurt all year. EL showed the difference in playing through injuries versus being healthy

Yes...& a lot of players play hurt. It's football biggrin Tell me when any of these guys are ever truly 100% for a whole season. The answer would be none of them.

That was going to be the on-going question with Williams: other than specials, where can you get him on the field? Doesn't have stretch-the-field speed at WR and not sure he would have been trusted enough to play safety.

    TR

I definitely believe we can just forget about Williams at Alabama from last weekend's events forward. No doubt he will given the benefit of the doubt and also must remember he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. With our legal system deteriorating like our political parties, can never judge what may occur. CNS will take appropriate action once the Criminal Investigation is ended. IMHO they are gone, all four of them!cold

The price of victory is high, but so are the rewards.

  • Corner worries me. Belue, Geno and then who else? Fulton was a junior passed over by a true freshman. Sylve and Jabriel Washington will have to step up.

A lot of opportunity for true freshman to play here.

I do not presume he is lost, I believe that CNS will inform us within the next week of his decision to boot him from the university. He has proven himself to be not too trusty off the field. Would like to see him stay but whatever happens will be his fault and his alone.cold
