Do we REALLY want a top basketball program??

  • We have top football program because we wanted it---we pay top dollar for the best coach in the business, we have a waiting list to join Tide Pride and make contributions just to buy tickets, we show up in droves for A-day, we make sure our facilities are second to none......and the result??? The best players want to come and play for the best coach, and so we win.

THEN, we get mad when we don't win in basketball--BUT--we have an "up and coming" coach who is paid well, but not at the top....our facilities are"ok"--but not top flight. We dont pack out every game....I mean, do we REALLY want it? CAG is probably a Top 25 in the nation coach. Add in ho-hum fanbase and substabdard facilities, and we get so-so players that make us what we are--a top 50 or 60 type team.

So what say you---are we willing to double contributions, attend every game, do waht is necessary to build state of the art facilities, and lure a top 5 coach and top 5 talent? I'm not sure if we are or not...

  • As far as the fan base as a whole, the answer is "not badly enough". Of course we want a top program. I don't think anybody will tell you he/she wants a mediocre basketball program. But we - again, as a fan base - don't want it enough to give it the support it needs to thrive.

The only way to change this is to overachieve and put a consistent top team together a la Florida. People will be inclined to come see the team if they win. For whatever reason, this doesn't apply to football at this school, but the people who use this to argue the facts staring them in the face are completely off base. We pack Coleman for gymnastics meets. Gymnastics. Why? Because it's an elite program.

exactly. The focus HAS to be on simply winning a LOT of games at first. Doing that with the RIGHT coaching staff who can bring in the RIGHT players---players don't have to be "elite" to be at least competitive and to play a style of basketball that real fans appreciate.

Once this occurs, and occurs CONSISTENTLY, the fanbase will be reignited and, subsequently, contributions will increase and the coliseum will stay packed.

the gymnastics program wasn't built overnight. Florida's Basketball program wasn't built overnight. BUT, they WERE built with SOLID coaches, SOLID kids, and SOLID competence and winning consistently, and at least PERFORMING at a level of competence and as a team that most fans recognize.

This basketball program is doing NONE of the above... and shows no signs of resuscitating itself without undergoing major, wholesale changes.

  • Maybe not a popular opinion, but Coleman is a dump. Looks decent from the outside but no kid is blown away when they step in that place. We will never be a contender until we build a new bball facility. There is a "wow" factor when a kid goes to Bryant-Denny. There is a "meh" factor at Coleman

  • He's a top 15 paid coach, so I'd assume we want to win.

  • Been saying the same thing for months, OP. We don't act like we want it. We know what makes the football program great but act like we don't when it comes to bball.

Agreed. I do not think we are expecting to be a duke or UNC bc the passion is not there; however, putting up 38 and getting beat by Auburn is totally unacceptable. I do not believe in calling for coaches jobs after a loss, but the team did not seem to care. It was a disgraceful display.
