ESPN Officially Introduces Missouri to it's SEC Friends

  • Mizzou will now officially be members of the SEC blog and moved off the Big 12 blog. We'll have a full day of posts today commemorating, debating and celebrating, but we'll kick things off the right way: with an introduction.

Introducing Missouri to its new SEC friends - Big 12 Blog - ESPN

Friends, today is the day. Mizzou officially announced its move from the Big 12 to the SEC back in November, but today we'll make the move official o

A&M has a storied history. It will be a success in the SEC. They will draw away recruits from Texas because they are in the SEC and kids want to play for winners. I really get ticked off when people say the SEC was dumb to get A&M. It was a great move. The Missouri move I am a little stunned by, but I'm sure they will be just fine. Texas A&M has the $ to run with the big dogs in the SEC and will be number 2 in the West, maybe not this year or the next, but I see them being a big powerhouse!

  • I don't think A&M is in any position to challenge for awhile. Yes... they will get some better kids. But we have no idea how Sumlin & staff will do at recruiting/developing SEC players. They could be facing a coaching change again in the near future.

A coaching change could be what they need. They got the money to spend on a big time coach. If they get a great coach, They will be contenders!

  • I keep thinking of the irony if TT had gotten the HC job at A&M AND ended up in the West of the SEC..............wow!

Maybe... but they just hired Sumlin. Who knows how he will handle the SEC?

I don't feel quite that strongly about the moves - but I definitely feel like we (the SEC) boosted those guys much more than they boosted us. I think they will bring some good competition, and will be good additions for both basketball and baseball.

A&M was already going to be looking at a slight down year next year, so playing in the SECW surely won't hep there. I'd imagine winning 9 games would be a huge success and would think 8 is probably a more realistic goal.

Mizzou I honesty don't know much about football wise, but playing in the East is a nice break for them. There's no great team on that side, unless you want to argue for UGA, but assuming they are an above average team they could win 9 games if some plays go there way. Probably also looking at winning around 7-8 games a goal.

So assuming they meet those expectations we just gained to bowl eligible teams, so at least they should bring some money to the table twocents

Don't understand why people cannot understand this was about NEW territory. Our contracts with ESPN & CBS pay more when more televisions are watching SEC games. When re-negotiating time comes this will pay off huge which only helps the SEC members.
I also don't get the negativity regarding A&M. They are a huge school with decent tradition and following/alumni. Missouri was just a filler but, IMO, have more potential to be good down the road than Ole Miss, Miss St or Kentucky.
Just curious, who do you think we should have pursued that we didn't?

Nope, those are two solid pickups. The reasons are numerous, but this has more to do with than football competitiveness (of which both programs have held their own in recent years). The first glaring upgrade is TV markets. Both bring strong regional TV markets to the SEC, which beings revenue. As for other sports, both programs bring basketball, and several other sports as well. The SEC academics are also getting a boost with Missouri.

That, and with new teams, the sec can renegotiate the TV deals, making the sec the most lucrative contract of all conferences.

I saw statistics that adding just those two schools will increase the viewership by 33% or 1/3! THAT is impressive. This is all just positioning for better leverage when we either 1) renegotiate with ESPN, or 2) start the new network and need to show carriers how much it's worth to them to subscribe...

WOW! Not too often we get a free thinker on here.

You sir are completely correct and mizz will compete for the East right off the bat. Y'all along w/ the natl' pundits love you some aTm but mizz the past few years has OWNED aTm in every way.

Just like when miami and f$u went to the ACC and were supposed to run the table in fball and suck in bball. How'd that turn out?

Mizz will be better than most think in fball and not as good as some think in bball.

Also, for the umpteeth time.............it's NOT ALL ABOUT FBALL!

aTm and Mizzou instanly make our conf twice as smart being AAU members. Post any list you want but no list compares to having AAU status.

Here's as 'inside' as you get w/ the details of mizz to another conf' FWIW.......

Originally, yes mizz was headed to the Big 10 and it was a done deal BUT........the Big 10 wanted mizz to accept the same Jr. status as nebraska currently has but mizz refused to and long story short the Big 10 was always planning on inviting nebraska down the road but offered it then and nebraska jumped on it.

When Slive (w/ KC connections who knows all about the state of MO) heard mizz was on the market it was aTm and either mizz or va tech. They crunched the numbers to see who was the best fit and voila! Say hello SEC tv contract very soon! That's not saying we were mizz's second choice. No, actually if any of you have any knowledge of mizz you know they've been wanting in the Big 10 for years(academic reasons) and it was always assumed that's were they'd end up until Delaney decided to get cheap.

So when you complain about mizz and aTm all you're doing is showing your lack of knowledge of the 'big picture' and grand scheme of things in this latest 100 year decision. If we were talking about starting a minor league NFL league based on the current SEC teams and a couple new ones then no you wouldn't invite aTm or mizz.

I'm right there with you taking my lumps as well. People forget because Missouri had a bad year, but they were a preseason national title darkhorse by several pundits. Now, that is preseason. But, they aren't chopped liver.

THIS^^ They'll finish top 3 at worst. Of course, that doesn't say much about the east, but Mizzou is not exactly a push over for most teams
