This is what I have learned from asking students and stadium officials. The students seats are first come, first serve. They fill up lower bowl first. by the time they close lower bowl gates and start sending students to upper deck the lower bowl is overfilled compared to available seats. Students have certain number of tickets (say 10,000), if lower bowl is supposed to hold 7,000 and they let 8,000 kids in then instaed of having 3,000 in upper deck you only have 2,000. This may have already been discussed but this is how is was explained to me.
If you cap the lower bowl at the right number of student seats then all that will happen is instead of having a few empty rows in the nosebleeds, there will be empty rows in the lower bowl in front of the south Zone seating because the students will still cram in. I'm really glad the people in charge of our Athletics department are able to show some more thought than many of the people in this thread.
Another point is you say it looks so bad, you can't even see that part of the stadium on TV and if you ask the players or the coaches how they feel about it you will probably get the same kind of response Saban gave to the conference realignment question last week. I'm sure they are all more focused on the field and not the Upper Deck of the South Endzone.
Take a look at this link
it gives some numbers of a limited survey of student tickets around the country. Alabama is not one of the schools involved but the best estimate I have been able to find is currently 15,000 tickets and that might include faculty tickets as well I'm not able to find a definitive source.
Using those numbers, our stadium right now includes only 15% students in the game. Go and compare that to some of the other schools in the survey. We only beat schools with much smaller enrollments or much smaller stadiums and we surprisingly beat LSU as well (I wouldn't have guessed that).
I just felt like bringing some actual information into this weekly argument although if you haven't heard the news yet
WERE UNDEFEATED AND #2 IN THE COUNTRY. Try and enjoy it.
