Fanning

  • I remember there being a buzz about Lamichael Fanning during spring and last fall. Any news on how he is progressing and what we could expect?

  • Bump. LF is my favorite up and comer. Well he and Adrian Hubbard. Can you tell that the sack is my favorite play in football?

  • Seen him today and he's bigger than ever. He's ready for the season coming up an he's bought into the system. Told me he maxed at 410lbs and He's been running a lot to get ready for camp. He will be a big factor about mid season. His size and speed is to good for him and now he has bought into the playbook. Can't wait for him to show his true colors this yr and show out.

  • He will end up playing in the NFL one day. Not ready yet obviously and I expect him to spend at least the first half of the season as a backup, but when the light comes on all the way the sky is the limit for him.

410 is a lot of weight for a guy who was pretty skinny a couple of years
ago and probably never seriously lifted before arriving at UA. The bottom
line is, not all "strong" guys in the weightroom are good football players.
And not all good football players are exceptionally strong. Remember
Rob-E Staten? Everyone used to post about his weightroom exploits,
but I can't recall him making many tackles for Alabama. He's jusr one name
on a long list. Every report I have read indicates that he's physically strong
on the field. He's a guy who probably needed time to grown into his frame.

6-6 or 6-7 guys are never going to be your strongest players. I doubt he ever
gets to 500 on the bench regardless how long he plays. Simple physics.

With his long arms, 410 is not bad on the bench.

Exactly. As far as raw strength, just ask DJ Fluker how strong Fannin is.

  • I have heard good things about the progression of Fanning during this summer. Though we will not really know how far he has progressed until we get into fall camp, Fanning should be in the rotation at DE as a situational pass rusher. Everyone knows that he has the potential to be something special, just got to see it in fall camp.

  • 400ish on a guy that is 6-6 to 6-7 is pretty damn impressive. He has got a long way to go for a full rep and kids his age takes longer to grow into a frame like that

as I have stated before and was attacked on about benching, alot of factors such as arm lenght and overall physical build make a big difference

Chest build and back have alot to do with it. You can have huge arms and a flat chest will make it harder. A 2inch thicker cheston a person with same length arms can increase your bench press in huge amounts.

This. 410 is alot of weight. Especially for a guy that is 20 years old. Wasn't the stronest bench at the combine 500 lbs by a guy that was a 5th year senior? Some peoples expectations are just ridiculous.

Tendons take time to beable to hold that kind of weight and given Fanning size it takes even longer. Technique is a huge factor that most people think that benching is chest driven in reality most the power comes from the triceps as you want to keep them tucked in not flared out. Flaring out you lose leverage and usually cause you to hit higher on chest and have a better chance of shoulder and upper chest injury. I rarley say anything at the gym to kids only if they as and subtle technique changes can help a good bit. I am pretty experienced and compete at a fairly high level and always have to work on form to get the most out of my frame

Yea the guy was built with a barrel chest from Memphis and they said did 50 reps at combine??

Vernon Gholston was a combine freak as well, how did he turn out?

  • Also, bench is over hype as far functional strength. I think the hips and thighs are where most of the power is generated for linemen. Wasn't it Dareus that only did 20 reps of 225 at the combine. I'd say he was pretty good.

  • Agree, good for the pool, beach and local gym.
