  • Didn't Smith transfer to Arizona when Perkins left and Curry came in?

I don't recall the circumstances of him leaving, just that I think he ended up at Arizona.

I recall speaking to Anthony once at a practice I attended. He was very cordial and polite.

  • Went to Arizona and then did fairly well with the Raiders.

I do not know why you have to post him as a former Bama player & he transferred to Arizona Wildcats, not ASU. Get your facts straight. Yes, he played one year at UA, the transferred out. He is known as a former Oakland Raider player & Arizona Wildcat. He was at Alabama for one year over 25 years ago for pete sake.

Umm, maybe b/c he played at Bama for a year, and thus, is a former Bama player? You get way too defensive man. If this was about Brandon Jacobs, you would post about it in a negative fashion against AU even though he only played there one year.

Please do. Sounds like he must have been a head case.

How did he get along with the players, coaching staff? TIA.

Smith was just strange; contrary to a few posts above he played a year with Curry as head coach...I still remember Curry barking Anthony Smith's name down from his tower on that bull horn often. Smith went to Zona when Rip Scherer went to Zona...doubt there was any significance.
Smith had his run ins at practice, but nothing out of the norm. He was just strange, not very personable, often in another world. John Guy used to rip into his arse all the time and so did Derek Thomas. The closest thing I ever saw to an altercation of seriousness was in Bryant Hall...AS decided he wanted a few more fried shrimp one night and instead of walking up and getting some more from Queenie he thought he just take a few off another players plate (walk on, won't state his name). After they were taken, said walk-on stated to AS if he ever touched his plate again he'd stick his fork in the back of his hand...AS looked as if he was going to take him to task, but the fork was drawn back to ear level and I have no doubt would have been played. Smith got up walked away cursing.

  • Can anyone explain to me why this thread had 7 downvotes? I mean, it is noteworthy and Allen Tide is not a troll on this board. Not all Bama players are saints, i.e. Burgdorf, Holdbrooks, Sherman Williams, etc. If he played at Bama, he's a former Bama player....even if he did transfer.
On a side note, y'all should here some stories about Andre Royal. Talk about psycho.....all I've heard is second hand but they're great stories. No one on the team would mess with that guy.....was like a nuclear bomb ready to explode.

Thanks, Bamamanager. Always enjoy your posts. Other than his strange demeanor, doesn't sound like Smith did anything at Bama that would lead anyone to think he would be turn out to be a cold blooded killer years later. Interesting stories nonetheless. RTR!

Think some had a knee-jerk downvote... I got a couple for asking if he was the guy that transferred to Arizona. To each his own.

I heard similar type stories about Royal as well.

FWIW, he's listed on Alabama rosters from '85 through '87.
