From the horse's mouth - LSU INT on Maze pass from the 1st game

  • I had the good fortune of going to a small luncheon today at which Tom Ritter and Tim Beard were speaking. Tom Ritter is the head ref with the kind of intense, bug eyes. Beard is one of the line judges on his crew.

They called the LSU-Bama game in Tuscaloosa this year. There was a Q & A session at the end, and a question came up for which he used the Williams/Reid dual possession play as an example.

Ritter said he saw all the blogs and articles written about it being duel possession which should have gone to the offense. But he said the rule book actually states it this way: If the players are on the ground demonstrating duel possession, the ball stays with the offense. However, if duel possession is demonstrated while still in the air, the ball goes to the team of the player that hits the ground first.

He said the back judge saw that it was duel possession in the air, and then the LSU guy's back landed on the ground before our guy so he awarded LSU the ball. They then used instant replay to confirm the call.

He said he did a poor job of explaining it to the crowd when he opened his mic up in the game. It was really interesting to hear that and was definitely a little nuance to the rule that I didn't know. I'm guessing a lot of people didn't know that.

Just thought y'all might find it interesting because that was the first real explanation I heard for that call. The lunch was really cool. Found out some really interesting things about officiating.

PS - if you ever see the refs changing out the ball or talking to the kicker or doing something else arbitrary after a close call, they admitted that they are delaying to give the booth time to buzz them so they don't snap the ball and miss a chance to review a play and get it right.

That is B.S. Williams hit the ground first.....They explained in their ruling that he was juggling the ball and did not have possession. They are covering up now...

  • There was never duel possession. He is full of it. Reid only had one hand on the ball when Williams hit the ground with both hands on the ball.

  • Int or not. That play put the events in place that would piss off alot of folks by Bama still making the NC. Now, more than likely there is going to be a plus one or at least some change to this ridiculas system we have now! Love the bowls but hate the BSS!

Ugh, it bugs me when Bama fans hate the BCS. I mean seriously, who benefits the most from the BCS? The Bama's, NDs and Michigans of the world who have the tradition to back them up!

I would rather keep the current system or at most have a 4 team playoff/plus 1. Anything more than that and someone who doesn't deserve it- a la Okie State, gets a shot at a NC.

One of the reasons I find basketball so boring is the regular season doesn't matter AS MUCH as it does in CFB. And in college basketball, it isn't always the best team that wins the national championship. Occasionally it's a really good team that caught the best team on their one bad night that season. And rarely it's a team that peaked at just the right time in the tourny.

That being said, why would you want to equalize the playing field by making Bama ( a favored team with both tradition, talent and coaching ) have to play more teams that could get lucky against us?

  • What's even more BS is that Reid's back NEVER even hit the ground...he landed on his side and rolled over forwards while fighting for the ball, right?

  • should of been out ball...and it may of set off events to piss people off letting us back in, but it would have been LSU being the one pissing people off for round 2 because it would have been 1 bama 2 lsu

A downvote for stating the fact that the officials screwed up? Has to be a LSU fan or an official that did it.

After Ritter's newest explanation of the INT I think he 100% missed the call. I stopped watching replays of the play in November, except when ESPN would pop one on during the pre-BCS game stuff, and just chalked that one as a 50/50 that simply went the other way. But the more I hear of the officials rationalizing the call the dumber they sound, and with this explanation and watching the play WOW. He is a good official, and all officials are going to make mistakes, he'd just be better suited just shutting up and being thankful in the end all was righted by us winning it all.

This pic says it all. In their original ruling they stated that Williams was juggling the ball and did not have possession. The pic that I am attaching shows both hands on the ball. Look at the bicep on the LSU DB's arm. If the ball was loose, why is he having to exert so much force taking the ball away that his bicep is bulging like that? This pic clearly shows Williams down and with possession of the ball. The frigging officials gave the first game to LSU and that is why they are now changing their story.

  • I could care less, it all worked out. Had the call gone our way and we won the game there is no telling how the season ends up.

  • Agreed we got the shaft with that call, but in the grand scheme of things we are the national champs, not lsu...roll tide!

Roll Tide. Look at it this way. Had it not been for providence causing so many teams to lose the 2 weeks after that game, it could have cost us a NC. Don't know about you but that bothers me.

  • The rule should be: When two players show dual possession, the ball should always be awarded to Alabama.

We ARE arrogant, we ARE better than you and Alabama IS the center of the college football universe. Get over it!

OUTSTANDING work! Reid's right hand was around William's waiste when they hit the ground and that is the most obvious truth to the play. Past that, it is arguable who hit first. Anyway, Roll Tide (We got 14 - they don't --- who is they, you say? EVERYBODY else who is NOT Alabama!)

  • Tom Ritter and crew will always back up whatever the call is on the field..There are plenty of "rules
they could have applied to this situation and him going back and saying all that crap to a luncheon group is complete BS.

SEC officials back whatever the call is on the field no matter what. Face it guys! If we got the call on the field they would be calling it dual possession to the offense.

I was pretty close to that play in Nov and I can tell you right now from where the official who made the call's position, there is no way he even saw if Williams even had the ball. Williams's back was to the official so of course the old goat could only see the ball when Reed grabbed the ball.

Really..I hope a new SEC bylaw comes in place that states, "You cannot officiate if you are eligible to collect social security benefits" Surgeons can no longer perform sugery..let's get rid of the old bats!

Roll Tide! We kicked their a$$es in the end and not even our SEC officials could change the outcome of that game!
