We were scheduled to play GT in the near future and they backed out.

scheduling opponents isn't as easy people would like it to be. Many teams already have the teams they are slated to play lined up. Think about trying to shuffle dates with teams that are set to face Bama on that particular day and trying to fit in the necessary home game somewhere. The high profile team or "name" team may not want to play you at your place. So many factors. These small teams will always be played. When or if Notre Dame football decides to join a conference in that sport, I guarantee you they play a small school once or twice a year. It is what it is. Somebody has to play them.
