Gainesville Sun on the talent gap between Tide and Gators

  • "Only 28 months ago, Florida and Alabama were football equals, two elite programs preparing to play in the SEC Championship Game with the winner moving on to the national title game for the second consecutive season.
Since then, the Tide has pulled away from the Gators, creating a considerable divide."

Wow, it's almost sad how talent deprived Meyer left that program with his on again/off again crazy antics towards the end.

I agree to a certain degree with what you are saying but Florida has recruited elite talent year after year. The difference to me is in the development of talent that CNS and our staff provide. We recruit elite talent and then we make them even better. I believe it truly is what sets us apart from everyone else.

I agree. They have had elite recruiting every year.

  • Urban Meyer was a lot about smoke-and-mirrors and panache in the HC. All of that was nothing that would last in the
rough-and-tumble SEC. He came to coach Tebow, did that, and then quit. It remains to be seen how he does at tOSU,
but I doubt he has the success he had at Florida......Time will tell.

Exactly! I thing Muschamp is wrong in saying there's a lack of talent. They have plenty of talent! But there's a change in scheme from spread to a power offense and defense, which is contributing to some of their yearly records. Plus some guys are not going to buy into Muschamp's scheme and go for themselves thus leaving some of their team mates out to dry. By next season (2013) they should be making a little bit more noise.

He continued to sign top prospects every year. Shit load of rivals 100 even five star guys just didn't develop.

They had a five star QB, multiple OL, and WRs. They have five stars at LB and at DB. Their defensive line (that was mauled by Chance Warmack, William Vlachos, and Anthony Steen) consist of Dominique Easley, Ronald Powell, Sharif Floyd, and Omar Hunter. Now recruiting rankings are an inexact science but I don't buy for a second that they didn't have enough talent.

Well he is basically saying their talent the last two years in the Jr/Sr classes has not been good which is closely related to their record on the field the last two years. I'd agree to a point. Other significant factors like Urban losing control of the program and a mass overhaul of system on the offensive side also contributed heavily to the record.

It's one thing to have talent but it has to be developed too. They can't develop it all in year one. Let's not forget Saban went 7-6 year one and we know Muschamp is no Saban. Granted Florida had more talent than Alabama in year one but their talent hasn't been very good the last couple years.

I believe he will do well, but mainly because his conference is weak. I think he will do well enough to GET TO the NC, but not well enough to beat his SEC opponent. I'm looking forward to the day Meyer and Saban face off again, and this time there won't be anywhere for Meyer to run hide. He will be forced to man up and face that CNS and Alabama own him no matter what conference he runs to.

Florida did have more talent as you said, but I think so much more that any comparison is sort of silly. It's not even remotely similar.

In 2007, Saban inherited a team that was horrible. Our LB core was a walk-on, a converted three star WR, a transfer from MTSU that was marginal contributor, and I think the Jack was Brandon Fanney or Keith Rodgers. They were completely devoid of talent. UF has Rivals 100 type guys all over the place at really every position. They just haven’t developed them, and it’s not WM’s fault.

  • I think there is something too those articles on Meyer. There is just too much evidence of very high caliber athletes not producing at all relative to their potentional in 2010 and 2011. Now look they got screwed by the Brantley injury but man they got soft after Teebow graduated.

    manbearpig7

  • I like the fact the man who caused UF's slide is now at OSU & in about 3 or 4 years OSU will be a mess. Urban has above average talent at OSU but he doesn't have elite talent like he did at UF & most of his talent is for more of a power offensive football team & not the HS offense he runs. IMO Urban will have a hard time turning OSU into UF north & he will be done in about 4 or 5 years with very little to show for his return to coaching. I can't stand the suckeyes so I'm glad a washed up jerk of a coach I don't like is now their coach. bol14

Heck, OSU is in a mess now...just nobody wants to admit it. They have the virtue of playing in the weak "Little 10" conference, so they'll win 8-9 games, but other than that, they have no hope of ever competing with the big boys.

Great post. Hard to believe those were our LBs just five years ago, but there it is.

Well to be fair I should get called out in that I forgot Rolo played everygame that year as a true freshman....

However, It's just amazing, a year later we were a powerhouse, two years later we won the BCS NC at 14-0.

What Saban has done is five years was outside of the imagination in all but the very biggest homers. In this highly unusual situations, the super homers were dead right.

I agree but after Urban goes small skill players & quicker smaller O-line they will be Michigan under CRR playing in a power conference (style of play only) outside in bad weather where quick & speed doesn't work as good.

  • BAMA/SABAN finished Meyer!!!!!He will be mediocre in Big 10.

IMO we are about to witness the same kind of malfunction at LSU. Saban teams and program seem to have a way of draining the will out of rilvary teams. They will probably win 10-11 games since the only 2 teams on their schedule that should present any challenge are South Carolina and Bama. Just don't think you will see the kind of dominance they seem to expect.

As already mentioned, time will tell.

  • Bama is the monster now. Tebow's 4th quarter heroics delayed it a year. Actually we could easily have four crystal trophies.

I've thought about this. Could you imagine having 4 in a row? I don't think the 2008 team could have beat Oklahoma tho. Utah (and several teams Bama beat that year) exposed the pass coverage. Just don't know if Bama could have stopped Bradford

  • A few thoughts here. First of all, Florida has plenty of talent, or at least they have signed plenty of talent. The players going into this draft are primarilly from the 08 and 09 recruiting classes. Bama was ranked number one in both classes according to Rivals so we should expect a good draft. But Florida was ranked three and 11 in those years and was only ranked at 11 in 2009 because they signed a very small class (only 16 players, but that included three 5*s and had the highest average star ranking of any class that year). In fact, Bama and Florida both signed seven 5* players in those two years, player developement has just been far superior at Bama. The whole tone of the article would lead one to believe that Florida is simply devoid of talent. That's, as the Chiz would say, pure garbage. Either they have poorly managed their roster, they have underdeveloped their talent, or both.

As for Meyer at OSU, I don't know exactly how well his health will hold up. But assuming that he is able to stay (mentally) healthy, he will do very well in the Big 10 IMO. Let's not kid ourselves, Meyer is a very good coach and OSU has a strong program. Yes, they had a bad season last year but how quickly we forget that they were 12-1 in 2010 and 11-2 in 2009. Moreover, there is a lot of talent left on that team and Meyer is already recruiting at a VERY high level. If he isn't dominating the Big 10 in two years, I will be surprised.
