Georgia w/ Gurley + Marshall

  • I know this is vs. tinrc, so I've already had several grades of saw. But Georgia is better than last year. They are tougher. How tough, I don't know, but Gurley is a man and Marshall is very good. They seem to have an identity now, and I believe they developed it over time by trying to be more like us. They run it well, they play good D, and they aren't nearly as undisciplined as they used to be. We're definitely better, but I guess I now believe UGA is the best team in the east. Thought it was going to be SC with UF as a darkhorse (ok, so I thought UGA would prob win it because of their schedule...think power rankings instead). Those should be good games, but it looks like they're gonna have to give Richt an extension after all the heat in his seat the past few years (save last year). Thank goodness for that, too. biggrin

  • Richt has toughed it out and weathered the storm quite nicely.

With the players they've had for the past 10-12 years, there was never really an excuse for a bad season. It's almost like Richt himself matured. They'd be pass happy, or they'd have a team sanctioned personal foul to celebrate a TD in their biggest rivalry game, or they'd get cute when they didn't need to. They seemed to quit when things didn't go their way (this is still in question...gotta see them have a tough game to see how they react). I just think this team has the look of a team with an identity, and they have a lot of really good football players.

  • They are a very good team with many of the pieces it takes to win a championship in place. And, Jones is the most disruptive defensive player in the game.

  • We'll see next weekend when UGA and gameday shows up in Columbia, SC. That could turn out to be a fantastic game.

Definitely. But they've had that kind of talent for most of the past decade. I think they have it focused in the right direction now. These things can be overblown, but I think dumping Crowell was a plus for their collective psyche.

  • Alabama and UGA are the 2 best teams in the SEC this year. UGA can give Bama a very competitive game IMO and we will see them in Atlanta.

    1. Bama
    2. UGAy
    3. LSU
    4. Florida
    5. USCe

    I think I agree....

But I want to see a couple things first: First, I want to see how UGA reacts when they get punched in the mouth. Next week will answer some questions (I Think) about what kind of resiliency they have. Secondly, I want to see how LSU plays for a few more games. They looked terrible against the aubs, but there are plenty of examples of great teams looking terrible against poor teams and then playing out the rest of the season well. An easy example is UA v. UT in 2009.

  • Richt has grown up. That is pretty evident when I watch this team.

The special teams joined the fray as well. I singlehandedly killed Georgia football.

  • I'm not sure I've ever seen a boomerang quite like this. For the first time in many years I brag on UGA, they're up 27-10, and in under 10 minutes they're down 30-27 and Richt may get fired at halftime.

  • UGA is nowhere near championship caliber. The mediots who keep comparing their D to ours are insane. We have not given up 30+ points in a game in two years. They just gave up 30 in a half.

I would have never compared them to us, except to say they're trying to emulate us. They have looked more like they had a tougher identity this year, but the entire team just went braindead.

Be interesting to see how they respond in the 2nd half.

They also avged 10 wins a year during that time with a couple of SEC championships and top 5 finishes. Except for a couple of seasons UGA has been good every year.

FWIW, I do agree with the Crowell comment. They are better off in the long run without him.

I don't think their talent is any different than it has been the last 10-12 years. IMO, the difference has come down to qb play. Murray is in his third year starting and is a good qb now. Over the years that Richt has been at UGA the only time they haven't been good is when they aren't good at qb. Ex. is Joe Cox at qb and the year Staffor and Murray were frosh. For the record, I think there are very few coaches that can win without good qb play. Very, very few. Just look at the best teams in the nation. They all have good qb play. Not necessarily great, but it has to be good. Can't make mistakes that hurt your team. Frosh qb will do that. And Joe Cox just wasn't good.

Other than that they have been a top ten type of team. The difference is qb play IMO. I don't see much difference with anything else (minor asterisk as Jarvis Jones is a difference maker on D that doesn't come along all the time).

  • I may be in the minority here but I do not think that Georgia will ever win a championship as long as Richt is their head coach. He has what it takes to win 10 games in a season but not what it takes to win a championship. His teams have always had more talent than their opponents but under him they always manage to lose a game or two that they are supposed to win. Today is a prime example. This game shouldn't be close but instead of blowing Tennessee out, they go into halftime tied after leading by 17 points. They may go on to win this game by a large margin but the loss of the 17 point lead captures UGA in a nutshell.

Sounds like the same thing that is said about every coach in America. Stoops hasn't won in how long and loses games, Carrol always lost games he shouldn't have, Tressel had a hard time beating Wisconsin, Meyer without Tebow, Miles, Mack Brown, etc.

Saban is about the only one that doesn't fall into that category. One stud at qb can make a difference and change that rep like it did for a few guys.
