Gymnastics team ranked No. 5

  • Alabama Gymnastics No. 5 Nationally by Regional Qualifying Score

    TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama gymnastics team is ranked fifth in the nation this week as they prepare to travel to Norman, Okla., to take on No. 2 Oklahoma this Friday at 7:00 p.m.

    This week’s rankings are the first determined by a team’s regional qualifying score (RQS). The RQS is calculated by taking a team’s top three road scores, its next three highest scores, home or away, dropping the high score and averaging the remaining five. After posting its highest road score of the season at LSU last Friday, with a 197.025, Alabama’s RQS jumped two-tenths to 196.730.

    Florida maintained its No. 1 ranking for the second consecutive week, while Oklahoma stayed at No. 2. UCLA jumped three spots to No. 3 while Georgia fell to No. 4. Following Alabama is No. 6 Nebraska, No. 7 Utah and No. 8 Arkansas.  Oregon State fell one spot to No. 9 and LSU, coming off a loss to the Tide, moved to No. 10 this week.

    The Tide dipped to No. 2 on the vault this week, and is ranked fifth on both the balance beam and the floor exercise.  Alabama is also ranked eighth on the uneven bars.

    Senior Ashley Priess is seventh on the balance beam and 10th on the uneven bars this week.  Joining Priess in the balance beam rankings is sophomore Kim Jacob at No. 19. In the vault rankings, junior Marissa Gutierrez is 11th, while sophomore Diandra Milliner and junior Ashley Sledge are tied for 14th.

    After facing Oklahoma on the road this Friday, the Tide returns home Friday, March 9 when it takes on Missouri starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262), located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum, or online at RollTide.com.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Bama beat Fla and Ga and another team ranked above them this year? I see in the article that they take the total scores during the year, but I think them being undefeated (I think) should put them in the drivers seat for the SEC and NCAA's when those matches come about. Just seems like a weird way to rank gymnastics when teams lose and are still #1, but I'm new to the scoring system

  • Yes Alabama absolutely rolled Florida.197.725 - 196.900 and beat LSU and Georgia.

    Strange scoring indeed, but as Chris said above, I guess they go by scoring. We have had some somewhat low scores this season(on the road for sure) and won. Maybe this is hurting us. Regardless when our girls needed to step up they have and haven't lost yet.

  • Seems to me they ought to factor in wins or losses like the stupid bcs formula. We would be #1 more than likely.

  • Guess they do not have enough educated media following this to use an opinion poll..It is odd to be ranked 5 when you have beaten teams in front of you..

    Yes, I wasn't aware gymnastics did this. I can't consider this a sport anymore. Why even have meets with other teams involved? Might as well just continue to do your routines weekly trying to beat your best score.

  • This week the rankings changed (and they do this every year) from being based on season average to regional qualifying score. The RQS is computed from the six best scores, of which three must be at away meets, with high score eliminated and the other five averaged. It's what is used for postseason seedings.

    So yeah, records doesn't enter into it and I think Alabama has only been on the road three times so far (Penn State, Kentucky and LSU).

  • Correction, Alabama won at Auburn too.

    The Crimson Tide already went undefeated in regular-season Southeastern Conference competition for the first time since 1991.

  • Presumably, teams are ranked by score because that's the best indication of how good a team is. We may be undefeated but we beat Florida and Georgia on days when they scored less than they normally do, and unlike football or basketball, you can't credit "defense" with that. There are no matchups in gymnastics - the team that scores more wins. Ergo, if we were to meet Florida again, they would be the logical favorites because they average more points.

    Of course, I'll gladly take an undefeated record and a #5 ranking all the way to #6.

    There's little point in it, since there's no defense in gymnastics. It doesn't matter as much who you're competing against as where you're competing. They could definitely use to factor the location of the score in so that road scores factor a little more heavily. Our main problem this year is being consistent. We have some low ball scores that are effectively cancelling out the 197+ scores.

    You could say the same thing about track & field but few would argue that isn't a sport. The reason you go out on the road is just like any other sport, it helps to go compete against others. They use the scores to seed everyone and then you have to win through the "tournament" i.e. regionals and championships. Also the winner of the conference championship is the winner. So it's not all on scores.

    You're pretty much correct. Our road scores are cancelling out incredibly high home scores this year. Also Coach Patterson tends to reserve some skills until more toward the end of the season. From what I have seen this year they are as good as anyone in the country when they hit their routines and will be even better come post season time.
