Had we not lost to Auburn at home in 2010...

  • we would not have won the NC in 2011-12. True or False? Defend your answer...

  • False. I doubt it had much effect. The losses to USCe and LSU were plenty to be disappointed about, if we needed that kind of motivation. The "Never Again" and revenge type stuff is fun, but overblown as far as motivating a team over a whole season. Maybe it made them work a little harder in the offseason, who knows. But I think they knew they underachieved in 2010 and the AU game was only part of it.

And I seriously doubt AU was on any Bama player's mind in the LSU rematch. Only one loss they wanted avenge on that night, and it wasn't AU.

you have to look at it like this:

    IF we would've won:

Auburn wouldn't have been in the NC Game. I don't know who else would've been in there, but it wouldn't have been an SEC team. SO, the SEC streak of NC's would've been broken...BUT, even more importantly---

Remember how RAZOR THIN the difference was between OKie State and Us was at the end of the year last year? Well, THAT difference was due to the SEC being a more higher rated conference and a tougher schedule BY THE SMALLEST OF MARGINS...

Would that be different had the SEC NOT won it all in 2010? I don't know, but it was close enough a call that I didn't wanna find out...

SO, that said, YES, losing to Auburn in 2010 Helped us in 2011 win it all from an external POV and from an Internal, motivational, POV...

  • On a night where we probably needed some style points on the plains, I don't think the loss the prev year hurt the incentive to really whip them like they deserved to be. Like another poster said though, the incentive to beat LSU may have been provided in the first meeting with the Tigahs.

I believe the Big 12 actually were considered to have the greater strength of schedule by the computers. With that said, I don't agree with that and think that they are falsely inflated due to playing 9 conference games just as the pac 10 schedules have been falsely inflated for years due to playing more conference games.

  • I am not sure you can narrow it down to the Auburn game. I think the culmination of the whole season and the let downs we had as a team fueled the '11-'12 Championship run. KInda like when I was in Utah working 2 weeks ago, I told the Ute fans out there "Thank you for the Sugar Bowl defeat". When they asked what I was talking about I just told them all they did was piss of the returning players and awakened the proverbial giant that we have today.

  • Auburn would've still won the sec and would have been in the championship game. Auburn had the tie breaker against lsu, bama would be on the outside bc of losses to lsu and usce.

Of course auburn was not on BAMA's mind on 1/9. But that absolutely ridiculous loss was on their mind all spring and fall, and that is when champions are made.

I have no clue if the 2011 team would have won it if they have beaten auburn in 2010. All I can say is thank God for Iowa State.

    Completely irrelevant.

    1. First of all, losing to Auburn and the "Never Again" motto did not keep us from failing to take care of business against LSU in Tuscaloosa, and...

    2. ...because we failed to take care of business against LSU, we needed a helluva lot of luck to even be in a position to win the NC. OSU didn't merely miss a game winning FG against ISU...it actually went right over the top of the goalpost. That field goal goes six inches to the left and Alabama isn't even in the NC game.

The loss to Auburn may have been excellent motivation for our guys to work harder in the off season, stay focused, be hungrier, etc., etc...but none of that kept us from failing to take care of business against LSU in Tuscaloosa. And because we didn't, we needed a helluva lot of luck to get back into the NC game and even have a chance to win. So by the time the BCS game rolls around, I think it was the motivation of having lost to LSU, not losing to Auburn the year before, that was the force behind the blowout victory.
