Has Saban ever promised a recruit a starting job?

  • I am pretty sure the answer to this is no, but I just wanted to make sure. Seems like that is a big recruiting tactic against us. You won't start for Alabama, but if you come here I promise you will start. I couldn't ever see Saban every saying that and that is why he is so well respected and coaches like dabo and cheesehead look like complete ass clowns when they have to resort to promises like that to try to pull recruits away from Alabama

  • Yes. He offered me one.

  • The absolute best recruiting pitch is one of Chiz's. I'll never forget reading an interview where he said he tells recruits that they've already earned a starting spot at Auburn based on how successful they were in high school.

    I love that!

  • Auburn media claims he offered guaranteed playing time to Yeldon but I don't believe Coach Saban has offered any recruit anything but a fair opportunity to compete.

Saban's pitch is always the same, if you come to Alabama, work hard, and earn playing time it will be given to you but you will have earned it on your own accord. We are not afraid to play freshmen, just look at the track record. McClain, Hightower, Ingram, Richardson, Julio, Vinnie, Trey Depriest, Cyrus, etc. The player that puts the team in the position to win will play.

  • Think it was at the press conference for this past signing class where Saban talked about it. Said making promises like that cause problems... it's disrespectful to the players on campus, and causes resentment when the freshman isn't the best guy and doesn't start. Said he emphasizes where a guy will be in three years, not his first year. He believes this having to start/play as a freshman, and making decisions based on that, is a sign of immaturity.

I also think this says a lot about the attrition rate they have.

  • It doesn't seem unreasonable that he has at some point. He's had 16 seasons and he wasn't always as seasoned as he is now. I wouldn't go so far as to say he never did it at Toledo or MSU. What really matters is if he currently makes such promises and that answer, I have no doubt, is unequivocally no.

Exactly. How likely do you think Corey Grant is to stay at Auburn if he doesn't see the playing field soon? He's already proven that he'll transfer schools. But, Auburn is willing to take the chance just in case it pans out. You're going to get some players that way, but you waste a lot of time developing guys who leave, and you will develop serious depth problems (attrition isn't going to nicely balance over all the positions).

Auburn is going to get plenty of RF-type players by taking a stance we are unwilling to take. This makes them quite capable of being an 8 or 9 win team. But, it also means they will be erratic, with some small chance of greatness (see 2010), balanced against a chance of total disaster (with their QB problems and lack of RB size, don't discount this team going AU 2008).

  • What other choice does Auburn have? What else can you possibly say to recruit against an Alabama?

I don't blame them one bit. It's all they have.

And given that Saban has four #1 recruiting classes in the last five years, I'd say the "guaranteed starting spot" pitch isn't that effective against us in the big picture.
