What exactly did Miles to do outcoach Saban? I'm confused....

He didn't stop his own team. Numerous times, in LSU territory, we stopped ourselves trying to get fancy. A sweep for a 5 yard loss, a slow-developing off-tackle run for a five yard loss, a reverse for a 6 yard loss, a wildcat throw from an injured WR for an INT. Just run our normal offense and we have AT LEAST 6 more points at the end of regulation if not more. Sucks.

    i agree

first time in a long time but I have to say that our coaches didn't show up. They had a bad game.

Don't include CKS in that statement--the defense was tremendous--the offense was horrible in play-calling and execution.

No fricking way...players were in position to make game winning plays... and they did not execute.
    That is not coaching!

I agree profusely. We beat LSU the entire game but gave them around 150 yards on stupid decisions. 2 for 6 on FGs while LSU punting us inside our 20, then putting immobile Maze back to field a punt when he can't move. Lastly, I am so sick and tired of 5yd losses on runs due to continually doing sideways runs out of shotgun.

    You nailed it.

Saban made Les Miles look like a genius. No, I don't think Les Miles coached a great game, it's just that Saban didn't show up for this one. You can't blame it all on the players. We had several substitution penalties that really cost us the game. In the first half it would've been a 44 yard field goal and instead it ruined two drives. And it also ruined the overtime drive.

How in the world are we in the 9th game of the season and can't break the huddle with only 11 guys?

It's unreal. We blew every good opportunity we had.

  • Tough loss. Can't blame it on a coach or a kicker. LSU just made the plays and shut down our offense in the second half. That is all there is to it.

To me, the play calling on first down each time we got into LSU territory is what killed us. We ran a sweep for a five yard loss, a long developing off-tackle play for a 5 yard loss, a reverse for a 6 yard loss, and a wildcat pass with a hurt WR for an INT (although I strongly disagreeded with the call, not sure how you can take the ball away from a receiver who had the ball all the way from the high point until he was down on his back). And that's why we were attempting damn near 50 yrd FGs the whole 1st half.

But that's just piss poor play calling on the offensive side of the ball. Would it kill you to run it up the gut with the best RB in college football? We had a lot of success running it right at them with their undersized DL. This one is going to sting for a while, we should have won this game, out gained em, out played em on defense, just missed too many scoring opportunities and F'ng killed ourselves with poor play calling. Tried to get way too fancy instead of sticking with what got us to where we were.

Side note: I think ol Les just helped out big time with that "I would be honored to play this team again for the NC" if we both win out.

    This. +1.

  • To say Miles outcoached him is somewhat of a stretch seeing as Miles did nothing special himself....however, Saban not using one of our two timeouts to stop the clock with about 1:33 to go was absolutely mind boggling to me.

I thought that we just made critical mistakes and didn't execute. I think we outplayed LSU as a whole, but we just didn't capitalize on scoring opportunities. I think CNS was outcoached last year moreso than this year. If Maze throws the pass a second earlier or Williams maitained possesion or Foster makes one of those feild goals, would you still be saying that CNS was outcoached? Probably not.

I believe this too. I really believe that CNS and staff had a great game plan. We had so many opportunities to win. Two missed FGs that can be made. We have made them in the past. One FG blocked. Great interception by Barron, ran it all the way to the three yard line, only to be called back because of a push in the back by a great BAMA player named Upshaw. And the one play that sticks out in my mind is the Maze throw to Williams. Even though it was slightly underthrown, Williams still grabbed it with two hands, I believe he should have sacrificed his entire being to hold on to that football. We were also on the LSU 24, with 1st down on that play. We could have at least had an opportunity for a FG which at that point I think would have won the game. BAMA's D did great. Had two picks, held LSwho to six points in regulation. The win was there. I think the players did not execute the game plan perfectly. Championship teams find a way to win. Period. We flat out did not live up the standard of Champions because we lost at BDS. But my heart is telling me that CNS and staff put us in the right position to win. We did not execute perfectly. And in these very close, evenly matched, talented teams, you have to execute perfectly. We have a Championship caliber team, we did not execute that way tonight. RTR

So, you honestly think after watching LSU play tonight that they are the hands down better team? I certainly don't. I think Bama is better on offense and defense. The only place they beat us is ST. That's why I'm bitter. If we lose 24-6 I could handle it much easier. The way we shot ourselves in the foot tonight is going to sting for a long time.

And while the rest of you guys are talking about class and how special the game was and our players gave 110% need to understand that in Jan we are more than likely going to watch a team we are better than raise the crystal trophy. The worst part is LSU is just warming up. They will be loaded next year and are recruiting lights out. We could be looking at a Urban Myer Florida type run.

Unfortunately, just as Saban has Petrino's number, Miles appears to have Saban's. Hopefully, that changes soon.

we didn't call timeout because we had a hell of a long way to go to get in field goal position. and a turnover costs us the game at that point. that wasn't a bad decision imo

It was an incredibly bad decision. We had the ball at the 20 with a couple of timeouts. We called a pass play that got one yard and ate up about 20 seconds, then we chose to take our chances in overtime. Don't tell me that there aren't some safe passes in our playbook that we can dial up in that situation. Even with 40 seconds left, that's 4 to 5 plays possibly...plenty of time to get 50 yards and get into possible FG range.

    airharper

  • I think it's pretty simple...

Overall, Nick Saban is the better coach. There's no question about that. I wouldn't want anybody else running our program given the choice. That said...

Les Miles is a better on-the-field coach. Gene Chizik might even be a better on-the-field coach.

Yes, execution...but tell me, what's harder...to pull down a catch with a 6' safety breathing down your neck or to not ask a bad FG kicker to kick a 50-yard FG? To avoid a block in the back penalty or to make sure you have ELEVEN GUYS ON THE FIELD?

Both were costly in this game, but one of them could have been controlled and it wasn't. That's the difference. If the coaches do everything right and we lose, then fine, but they didn't. I'm starting to wonder how we won that NC in 09 because it certainly wasn't by putting up 6 points in the SECCG. I believe we scored 32. It's like we finally found an opponent who knew how to stop Trent and McElwain had no idea what to do. Either he doesn't have what it takes to make the necessary adjustments or something's stopping him. Whatever the problem is, it needs to be fixed. This isn't even our first 12-man penalty this year. Unacceptable.
