Holmgren Compares Shaun Alexander to Trent

  • Holmgren believes Richardson will be a better all-around running back than Shaun Alexander, who played under Holmgren with the Seattle Seahawks. "I love Shaun, if I could adopt Shaun I would, but he wouldn’t block anybody, nobody and I still love him," Holmgren said "The difference is Trent is an excellent pass receiver, not just a willing blocker but a very, very good blocker so when Pat’s calling the game and we’re running our offense you don’t have to be thinking, ‘Okay now how do we protect him in the passing game?’ You don’t have to do that so that’s different. But, again I have great affection for Shaun Alexander and what he did for Seattle and what he did for me. This young man, different player, and there is no reason he can’t do the same for us here.”

  • The difference might be that Shaun was coached by Mike Dubose and Trent was coached by Coach Saban. But having said that, Shaun will always be one of my favorite Bama players.

  • That is a funny quote.

  • That's sure not a knock on either guy, both those backs are/were really special. Trent will make his mark. The Browns got better overnight, I believe TR and Weeden makes their Offense instantly much better.

  • I remember back in the day, if you wanted a championship fantasy football team, you would draft Shaun Alexander. He always got to the end zone. He had 5 TDs in one half in the NFL! That's crazy.

Shaun was coached by Ivy Williams who did his best to make Shaun a better all around back. The guy could run but he wasn't touching a LB in blitz pick-up. It is one of the primary reasons he redshirted in 1995 and played as a back-up in 1996 when Stallings was the Head Coach.

Everyone who has known Shaun Alexander will echo exactly what Holmgren just said. Williams was very close to Shaun even after he went to the NFL. I wouldn't be surprised if they are still in contact today. He was hard on him sometimes but it was only because they knew he could be great.

  • I hope so because he had Shawn setting behind the loud mouth Ricky Waters for a couple of years until RW got hurt & he had to play Shawn. Once Shawn started playing it was clear to everyone he was a lot better than RW & I think RW moved on after the season & Shawn was the starting RB.

  • Trent not only will pick up a blitz , he'll do it with great enthusiasm .

I remember this. Shaun was in the dog-house a lot for stuff like this. Shaun was an amazing runner but I definitely agree that Trent is a more *complete* back.

The only thing that worries me is Trent's longevity. I know he's a beast but all the athletes in the NFL are just sick. It's just a matter of simple physics that the magnitude of the hits these guys take are increasing as the players themselves get bigger and faster and more explosive. Shaun was very good at not taking the big hits and he still hit the wall at age 29 (I don't know how well Shaun took care of his body). Emmitt Smith imo was also quite good at not taking the big hit even though he was a power runner and got hit a lot. The *only* thing that will stop Trent from being an All-Pro is if he's slowed down by injuries. He has the skills to have a better pro-career than Shaun and I know he will take very good care of his body.

  • I might also add that Trent covered kickoffs like a maniac his first year in the program. When Mark was injured early in Trent's soph season, CNS had to pry Trent off the kick coverage team due to depth concerns at running back. The young man is just a pure football player. I am positive he would be a great outside linebacker or strong safety.

I can't say any of that about Shaun although he is a favorite.
