I just watched Finebaum from Thurs OTL on ESPN and ..

  • Let me just say that I think Paul got bombed a bit, lol. I normally love seeing him on there spreading his rhetoric/entertaining and such to improve his show (because I view Paul as "entertainment" only, but he reminded me of Skip Bayless and Whitlock from the Kansas City Star. I know he was trying to defend HWjr which was great and all, but he lost me in the middle of his rants. One of the most confusing and ridiculous arguments ever defended on national TV took place that day on OTL. Havent seen it yet? Here check it out.

  • haven't seen it but i was listening to paul on the radio right after he came back from OTL that day. one of the few times i've disagreed with paul's reaction on something. and i understand this has nothing to do with his statements on fox news and maybe that's a reason to be upset. but a caller complained about hank's song, "if the south would've won", calling it offensive. finebaum just yelled at the guy for no good reason. pretty easy for to understand why those words could offend someone. and if you're offended, you're offended. no argument. personally i think it's pretty tasteless, but it's hank and his art so i won't judge.

I'm not defending Hank. Honestly, I have not listened to what he said and I don't care to, nor am I defending Finebaum. However, a lot of people these days want to be offended, and if they are offended I don't care about that either. "PC" is out of control, and this country is full of thumb suckers and bed wetters. • Hank Wiliams Jr is entitled to his art and his opinions , but there are always consequences for your actions good or bad! Finebaum gave the northern press what they wanted... a stereotypical hotheaded , ignorant , racist southerener ! I wish he remained calm and commented with intelliegence on this subject.

  • I was raised in Cleveland, graduated from the Capstone/Alabama, have resided in Florida for 27 years .
You" hit the nail on the head". On a national television platform- which includes many not familiar with Finebaum- he misplayed this in its entirety.
He could have intelligently and rationally pointed out that Hank Jr. is a musician, whose poltical views have offended many (analogy is Springsteen) but he's (as has the Boss) raised money for the needy, etc., including recently. A straightforward comment by him saying stereotyping any region and/or activist is unfair regardless and whenever and been 100% more effective.

ok, well maybe there is an argument. agree that "PC" is totally out of control. but i gotta admit, if i were a black guy deeply in touch with my ancestry and what they had to go through, there's a solid chance i would be offended by the song. maybe i'm being too sensitive, but it's just an opinion. i am glad the south lost and wouldn't feel comfortable around someone that felt otherwise. maybe you could argue that slavery would have fizzled either way. maybe so. we only have the facts as we know them and can only speculate on what we don't know.

What in the world did he say that made him a racist? That word is the most over used response to any argument that it no longer packs the power it used to. Those northern racist are going to think what they want to think when it comes to southerners no matter who was defending HWjr.

It's fair. These guys make a ton of money from the public for doing very little. His contract basically tells him that they want him to be pc. If he wanted to share a possibly inflammatory comment, he shouldn't have signed the contact.

  • The problem is, the song says nothing about wanting slavery to continue. Its just saying that he feels the conservative ideals that are more prevalent in the south are better represented by southern government. I also am glad that the war ended the way it did, but people shouldn't take things as literally as they do. As for calling Obama the enemy, why didn't the same people who have a problem with what Hank said have a problem with Kane West saying that George Bush hates black people? I mean I think we all know that was a total crock and he was basically saying the same thing. Plain and simple Obamas policies DO NOT represent what the MAJORITY of southerners believe.

If kanye had worked for espn, he would've lost his job too. Hank signed a contract saying he would keep his opinions to himself. He broke it, got what he deserved.

It's Hanks right to say whatever he wants, but he can't say whatever he wants and keep his job....none of us can.

Agree and admittedly, I didn't get a chance to view much of the lyrics at work. I know the intent isn't aimed at slavery and I give him a pass because it's his art. It just seems incredibly reckless to write a song saying we'd be better off if the South had won the Civil War. No matter your intent, you're going to hurt people by saying something like that. It's not a place I would dare go, but it's not my art.

Well answer me this. And believe me I'm not disagreeing with most everything you say. Why is it ok for rappers to talk about killing cops and callin white folks crackers? Yet you still have plenty of them that have their endorsements. Seems like a double standard allowing for reverse racism to me. And how many of the older black generation have been offended by the same rappers using the N word every other word in their song? I mean it seems to me that they would respect the people who sacrificed so much for their freedoms during segregation and before. And no one completely addressed the point of why it was ok for Kanye to say what he said and no one be outraged, but since it was Obama it is a crime against humanity.

  • The war wasn't fought over slavery. In fact, I've seen a copy of a letter Lincoln wrote to seceding states before the war started, offering to protect their rights to have slaves if they would rejoin the Union and it changed nothing. Slavery was on it's way out. And only a VERY small percentage of southerners had slaves. And I've heard very convincing arguments that if the south would have won (the country wouldn't have been divided for very long) or if Lincoln hadn't been killed (he was against Reconstruction), racial tensions wouldn't be as bad as they are today.
Also, racism is more talked about, but less prevalent in the south. It's way worse up north. They just pretend. I'm not saying it's not here. It's also not one sided. But it's getting better with every generation. Sad thing is, it's those that want to keep it going to have a crutch that keep the water stirred. The race card has lost it's validity because of the false claims.
Bottom line, Fox got the attention they wanted, an issue that needs to be dead and buried was given a little more penicillin, and ESPN was caught in the middle. All while making the white southerner look like a heartless, brainless bigot.

Well Kanye is crazy. He obviously has a mental disorder. But those are valid questions. I think there are a few different issues here though and the the issue I'm getting at is Slavery. Slavery was bad and no one should even go there. If you're talking about name-calling, personally, I don't care if a black guy calls me a cracker. It's just a name and doesn't really mean anything to me. I don't think there's any racial name a black guy could call me to upset me because it just doesn't have any meaning. My white ancestors weren't slaves. Using the N-word conjures up the days of segregation where we treated some people who are alive today, like dogs. But at least it's just name-calling. As you know, many young black people don't think the N-word is a big deal. I would bet those that got shot at with fire hoses might disagree with that and that's an issue between themselves. But I know it's hurtful to some, so I'm not going to use that word.

Luda is a rapper that lost his pepsi endorsement because of something he said. On the other hand, Glen Beck said that Obama hates white people (same exact thing that Kanye said) and he didn't lose his job.

People can complain about a double standard all they want whenever someone loses his job for saying something stupid. But bottom line is Hank is paid a ton of money to keep his opinion to himself and avoid any controversy. He failed miserably.

Agree with all you said except one thing. I never treated anyone like dogs, since I wasnt born yet. You said we. I absolutely hate what happened then and during slavery. But the fact is that the song in question never mentions slavery at all. Nor did Hank mention it in the interview.

As for your point. I'm pretty sure he knew what he was doing. However I never heard a racist thing come out of his mouth. He spoke about the man. Not the black man. In fact, if you watch the whole interview, he also said some bad stuff about Palin. And he supported her last election.

I never said glen was racist, just saying that he said the exact thing about obama that kanye said about bush. And if you think kanye is racist, he actually dates a few white women.

The point still remains that Hank gets paid a lot of money to stay pc. He broke his contract. Period.

So I guess what we should really be questioning is, what is PC really? I imagine that it is a bit different for some people than it is for others. And I never said Kanye was racist.
