I know 99.9% on here don't care, but we need a new women's bb

  • coach badly. Wendell is a great guy, and a neighbor of mine, but he is in over his head as head coach. I am interested in all Bama sports teams, and women''s basketball gets attention when it is done correctly. Dropping the sport is not an option, so it is time to improve it. Let Wendell go back into his Admin position, and use his expertise to select a new leader.

  • My family and I have been season ticket holders for years and it is really sad to see how far our team has fallen over the years. I know we've had injuries this season, but I don't know that I can honestly say that we would have been much better without the injuries. The basketball IQ of the majority of the team is not very high. Horn is a very good player and will make a difference next season, but she needs some help. We are not a very tall team either. I know one of the recruits for next year. She is a 3 guard that's about 6' 1" and can light it up. We are really missing Tierney Jenkins this year. She was an All-SEC selection as a senior last year. In the meantime, we will still go to all the games and cheer the girls on.

  • I agree, but who really cares? Our family went to games all the time at Coleman, but since the move to the new digs... Clearly no one cares. Unless its UT!
My daughter (who is 9) loved this team.. Knew the coaches and players on a first name basis.. But now, because we can't afford season tickets... We are sent up stairs! YET.... Season Ticket holders do not show up!!! Empty seats, everywhere!!!
So, we stopped going... I sent a letter to Coach Moore, and others... With no response... My little girl is now swimming instead...

We should've never hired him in the 1st place. Would BAMA football ever hire a coach from a Community College? Heck no! Bama needs to hire a coach that has coached for UCONN or TENNESSEE. A coach that has been directly involved in a highly successful women's DIV 1 basketball program. Those are the 2 most successful programs over the last 10 years. I believe we had a chance to hire a coach with UCONN ties 2 hires ago, but didn't. Wendell Hudson is most known for being the 1st african amer. athlete @ BAMA. His most success as a coach has been with men's teams, most notably CM Newton's assistant. Mens & women's basketball is considerably different.

  • I don't want to throw Wendall to the curb. When his time is up, I hope they can find a place for him within the Athletic Department.

  • Bobby Knight once said that there are three things that should be done in private:

    1. Having sex.
    2. Picking your nose.
    3. Watching women's basketball.

    I couldn't care less about women's basketball.

For years we had a poor basketball program because it was a place we could put an important football assistant coach. You have to go back to 1917 to find the next coach besides Hayden Riley to have a sub-500 career record. Then, when we decided to get serious about basketball, we hired CM Newton and made Riley the head baseball coach. Riley then went on to have the worst career record of any Alabama baseball coach since the 1920s...sometimes just signing a bunch of Tuscaloosa area high school players. Riley eventually retired (I don't think he was fired). We finally decided to get serious about baseball. Hayden Riley was a great football assistant and recruited John Mitchell, but if we had taken basketball or baseball seriously at the time, would he have ever been kept in those positions?

So maybe having Wendell Hudson as our women's basketball coach isn't the first time we've done something like this.

Yet, while I personally couldn't care less about women's basketball, it obviously is important to a lot of people. And at Alabama, if we're going to have the sport, we should do it right. So, yeah, it's time to go out and hire the best women's basketball coach we can find.

It's the right thing to do.

  • I wish Wendell would move back in the position he was before he became the coach. He did very well in that position.
Two names to consider if there is a change.
    1. Tim Miller - Currently head coach at Bob Jones High, and previously at Jeff Davis. Over the last 7 years he has reached the final 4 each year, reached the finals 6 of those years with winning 4 state titles. Two of those titles were over much better teams. His team is a favorite to be in the finals again this year. Miller knows the state well, and has very good relationships with coaches throughout the state. If you've ever watched one of his teams play he gets the very best out of each kid. Hiring a high school coach is not the desired route to take. However, with the lack of interest shown by the administration for the girls program, why not give a guy like Miller a chance. The guy can flat out coach.

    2. Tina Langley - I doubt very many know the name. She is currently an associate head coach at Maryland. She grew up in Jasper, AL, and played college ball at West Alabama. Her coaching career includes head coach at Walker High School, Graduate assistant at Toledo before becoming a full time assistant. From there she went to Clemson for as an assistant for (I think) 4 years, and then took the assistant position with Georgia. However, before the school year started at Georgia she resigned to complete a second graduate degree from Alabama. After completing the degree, she was hired by Maryland as an associate head coach. Maryland has a long history of being a top 10-15 program. I'm pretty sure she would come if offered.

Both are great coaches as well as great people that have a history of success.

  • As someone who squeezed 2 years of JUCO into 3, Shelton's girls' team has been really good since at least the early 2000's. I dunno if she was the coach then, but I remember the girls team usually did pretty well in their tournament.

Ok, I don't care about the downvote, but come out to play and let me know what I said that was offensive? I'm not being a dick, just saying that I can't imagine how the tickets can be exorbitant when there are 11 people at the game.

  • I think we saw what a priority women's basketball was to our athletic department when they elected to just move someone who had been out if coaching for several years from an administrative job within the AD to head coach. I doubt there's too much pressure on WH to win
