I ‘m not just saying this because I’m a Bama fan

  • but this year’s defense might be one of the best college defenses I have ever seen. I know….the 92 defense was nuts, but this year it’s like it evolves. Also, the offensive line played awesome tonight. It’s scary to think what this team can do when it runs on all cylinders. rockon

  • If we judge the greatest defenses by national championships it remains to be seen they are very good no doubt.

  • I am near that point, but I will reserve my judgment after we play a team that has the identity and the personnel for running the football. LSU sure comes to mind. We sure look to be pretty damn special right now. But beating an ARK team without their best RB and 2 of their best WR limited by injuries, and a UF team that I always thought we would blow out doesnt fully convince me yet after only 5 games. The Bama in me says WOW when I see how great we look as a defensive unit, then the objective side of me says to wait until we play that LSU and maybe AU game. I say AU because good grief they're lucky as hell. How would we respond when things dont go our way late in a game. I agree, as of right now, we are the best defense I have ever seen. This high level play is hopeful to be continued...

i like our 2011 unit but to compare them with the 92ers is simply insane. i would opt for 2009 perhaps....
-Kirkpatrick is good but he's not Langham
-Barron & Lester are a fine pair but Teague & Shade were as well.
    -Milliner(while only a soph) & Menzie = TJ & Gaston (Johnson was a playmaker).
-the current run D is sick but so was the 92ers
-UpShaw is a force but Copeland & Curry were absolute freaks

keep in mind that in 92 Barker passes for 8 yards vs Miami & we thrashed the Sugar Canes with a heavy
dose of defense, Lassic & Shake Williams ,and the Deuce.headslap

92 didn't have these kind of LBs

You’re exactly right. The LBs are so big, strong and fast losing Mosley was not an issue. Just plug in another stud and let them go at it.

  • Right now, from my limited perspective, this years D is better than the 92' D in one major area; Stopping the run. I dont think the 92' D was this good in that regards. This years D has completely made other teams one deminsional. Teams simply can't move the ball on the ground. It really is impressive, uncanny.

However, it is a total D team effort for what made the 92' D so special. Great D line, with great book ends that were sack masters. LBs were great (Ours I think are better) and the DBs were simply outstanding, suffocating (Might have a slight edge over this years). At the end of the year the 92' D just about finished first in every D category. Almost a perfect D.

It is hard though to compare the two, because CNS style of D is different from Coach Stallings style of D. Mainly in terms of CNS D is focused on "effecting the QB'', where the 92' D was more about sacks. The use of LBs is different too. So it is hard to truly compare the two because I think the CNS defensive approach is different from the Coach Stallings approach.

This years D is special. That is why they are getting these comparrisons to the 92' D. And both are special in their respective ways.
