I think when a recruit

  • Commits to a school early they need to go ahead and let him sign his papers instead of waiting. I think this would stop a lot of kids from flipping all the time. Just a thought what do you guys think?

Never going to happen because the pressure would be on every player being recruited to commit and sign NOW. Coaches would not be able to develop the relationships with the kids nor have the time to adequately judge a kid based on character, skill, talent, academics etc. It is just a bad idea all the way around. JMO. Who care if they flip ....they are 17-18 years old. That is what kids that age typicaly do.

  • I think the best thing would be to change the term "commit" to something else or just not be able to publicize any leanings whatsoever.

In Bama's case I can't think of an early commit who actually went somewhere else. However, I also don't recall very many of them going on many visits after the commitment. Could be wrong.

Face it. It's a roller coaster ride all the way to signing day. Why should this year or any other year be different.

    Good thought josh. RTR

I see where that could be a problem but I see it helping kids wait till signing day and make sure that school is right for them.

  • I believe this was brought up during some NCAA meetings 1or 2 years ago and was voted down...I don't see why it won't work they have for College basketball...RTR

  • they could have an early and late signing period. if you sign early then de-commit you sit a year, if you wait til NSD to decide then you have no consequences... just spit balling here.

  • I would be all for an early signing date sometime in December. I believe coach Saban has expressed his support for an earlier signing period as well. Coaches should have had plenty of time to evaluate prospects by then, it'd only be about 6-10 weeks before the february period

  • Locking them in like that would be of no benefit to the player. The whole system is already in the favor of the schools, giving kids the option to change their mind is not a huge deal IMO.

You would think that the school would be locked in as well and a Jamar Taylor situation would be impossible. I think both sides would enjoy some benefits.

The kids should have an opportunity to sign and the schools should have an opportunity to accept an LOI early if they want to. The nature of the document and relevant outs should be between the school and the prospect.

Who's Jamar Taylor? (J/K) I agree whole heartedly with you. RTR.

  • cause if there is an early signing period then u couldnt offer a grey shirt to make room for the high profile kids

    biiglazee4404

  • Just because it an option doesn't mean either the schools or the kids have to do it. I am just not sure why it hurts anything.

    manbearpig7

  • it would hurt Alabama more then anything, cause the kids u would ask to grey shirt would have already signed and u would miss out on the likes of goldman, collins ect, cause those kids have already signed and taken up a spot

  • We already have an early signing period. This year it starts on Feb 1. Everybody doesn't have to sign on this date, but almost all choose to because if they don't then their scholarship may go to someone else ready to commit.

Here's my point. Let's say we create a new early date of Dec 1. Within a year or 2 that will become the de facto date for everyone due to the enormous amount of pressure to go ahead and sign. Before long on 12/1 we will all watch FAXcam girl do her thing. ESPNU will have 'all day' signing programming. Feb 1 will become an afterthought.

In another 10 years, folks like you and me will sit around wishing for an early signing day because of kids ready to commit before 12/1. Someone will suggest 9/1. You know the rest of the story.

I just think it would lead to kids being pressured into signing early on a very one sided contract.

Im not against a limited early signing period But I don't see the harm in letting them weigh their options as long as they want. If some of them flip so be it. Who is that really hurting besides some butthurt fans who take it way too personally?

Coaches understand a commitment isn't real until a LOI so they have contingency plans. Just part of the game.

  • I definitely think an earlier signing period would help...

have Feb. 1 be the late signing period.

Have an earlier one in the fall.

I would be a big supporter of this I think. Don't see it happening any time soon.

  • I think an earlier signing period for those who know where they want to go would be great. However, I already feel like one of the reasons for the flip flopping is pressure from coaches, fans and media to sign before they really know where they want to end up.
