If teams continue to stack the box with 8

  • Or 9 guys, what will Nuss do? It appears teams are selling out to stop us from running wild. I saw AJ thow all over LSU down field in the NC game last year, so I know we can do it. What we can't do is continually try and run up the middle or off tackle when they are loaded in the box. Teams will do this and put the game on Aj's shoulders and make him throw the ball DOWNFIELD to beat them. Playing vanilla is fine when u know you can beat a team by playing good D and better talent. What bothers me is the lack of creative play calling, the multiple tight end looks with them shifting and us throwing to the tight ends. The worst thing is that we are having a hard time establishing a consistent running game with the line and backs we have and as a result our drives are stalling out it seems. I don't know what Nuss is trying to do, but at this point in the season I am concerned with what I have seen for the most part. Is he holding back or is this what the new mindset of our offense? I dunno, but by the end of the season we will know, I just hope by then we become more creative and efficient. I'm not downing the team, a win is a win, I guess I am questioning our play calling and our offensive philosophy. I'm not calling Nuss out, but im curious what he will do to improve. Needless to say, I am concerned about playing tougher teams with our current offensive philosophy. And no, I dont expect to score 50 points a game!!!, but with our talent I do expect us to run the ball much better. As I see it, its play calling, but im just a fan, what do I know? I'm sure I will be slammed for this post, but I will always support the Tide, I'm just concerned. ROLL TIDE, 5-0, #1 In the nation!!!

The mindset of the offense belongs to one Coach Nick Saban. Nuss definitely has input, but overall (mindset, identity, etc.) he does what CNS tells him to do.

  • People were "concerned" with our offense even deeper into the season last year (and the year before, and most likely the year before that), but now all of a sudden McElwain was god's gift to OC's & Nuss is the terrible OC who can't figure out how to stretch the field, right?

Damn these crafty OC's. How in the world do they continue to slip these vanilla gameplan's past CNS every week? If I didn't know better I'd swear it was almost his offense completely & all of these other guys just get paid to come in here & run it, exactly how he tells them to run it. Of course, it would take a guy with some kind of attention to detail, to waste his time assisting with the offensive gameplan, when his background is on the defensive side of the ball. Who in the world would actually waste their time determing what they wanted our future opponents to see us do, on the game film they're watching during preparation for our game?

  • I like ball control, no turnovers, and winning the ball game by 19 points after scoring more than 30.

    Just my opinion

  • The only difference you will actually see is in games where we truly feel there is not a significant talent gap and possibly UT. I expect our most wide open offensive games to be LSU and UT. It is all a learning process, but I doubt we force the issue in many games. We are much further along passing than LSU and unlike previous years we are getting points in the redzone.

  • My only complaint would be the lack of screens. When we play undersized scrappy teams who are flying all over the field we need to get them out of place and all of our rbs can catch.

Seemed ok to me. If AJ doesn't under throw two balls we got two more tds on the night and we hit our 45 point mark. Norwood didn't help either dropping balls.

Running the ball into a 9 man front over and over and over again is not ok imo. That and throws under 5 yards all night. We are capable of much, much more and when we call plays like that we are not coaching our players to the level we ask them play. Jmo

Let the "but we won by 19" and the "we've won two out the last three NC posts" even though they have nothing to do with the yesterday's play calling. I'm not being negative imo, it's just the truth. We didn't give our offense a lot of opportunities to be successful based on what OM's defense was doing. I'm glad we won, but we can do better, obviously. I expect we will moving forward.

The point was that we've gone 53-6 over the last 59 games thanks to ball control and time control. We did both of those last night, so I'm content with what we saw. Of course we'd all like to see tons of explosive offense but...who cares? We're playing Bama-ball.

I hear ya but this wasnt like the 09 UT game we won by 2 points. And you still have to run the ball some even if there is a 9 man front. What you have to do though is complete the long td throws that will be there when people put 9 up front, which im not sure they were doing anyway. AJ missed those. Thats not Nuss's fault. He hits those two and no one is complaining today, at least I hope not. And he would also have vaulted himself into the Heisman race for real. Didnt happen though. He was late and short.

But if hits those two we got 45 points. Is that really a poor offensive showing by our OC? Not in my book.

  • Once the next Brad Smelley steps up, our offensive options & subsequent production should improve. I hope one of our current players can grow into this role before the end of the season. As it stands today, we miss the production from this position.

This may be too much to ask this season. It took Brad until his senior year to really hit his stride. Most of those attempting to fill the void appear fairly young according to the roster.

Agree totally. Like you said it's not an issue of winning by 19 or more pts. It's about the OL playing like the best OL in the nation instead of having a 255 lb Nose tackle true fresh making tackles for loss. Play. After. Play.

It seemed like the OM defense got stronger as the game wore on, instead of the opposite happening. Very discouraging to watch the most talent stock piled team in the nation fail to run the ball consistently against a 5-7 team ( at best) loaded with 2-3 star talent. makes you tremble in fear to think what the run game will look like next year.
