If there is one thing this team may not have...

  • When talk turns to what happened in 2010 and why it turned back around in 2011, the catalyst people talk about is leadership, senior leadership. When I watch film from last year, there is something else that stands out. We had a couple of guys that the other team just didnt' want any part of. Upshaw stands out in that category. So does Richardson. There were others, Hightower, Barron, etc. This is related I guess, but its a little different than leadership. You know Jefferson didn't want to run the option in the BCSNCG. And he sure didn't want to run it at Upshaw.

Do we have those guys on this team? I don't know. I'm not saying we don't, I just don't know. We've got all kiinds of talent, more experience at QB and a great OL. We have excessive depth and talent on the DL, RB and WR and we have great LBs. Do we have the toughest guy in the bar, the one everybody is afraid of? We'll find out.

  • It's a very legitimate question.
We haven't had it at WR since Julio.
Right now, we don't have it at RB.
AJ and the OL is probably the closest we have on Offense.

Somebody is going to have to become that guy on the DL - J Williams, Dial, Hubbard.
Vinnie and Lester could easily already be the guys in the secondary.
The LB corps has plenty that should be feared.

Gonna be a very fun/interesting summer and fall camp.

  • Would you want ANY part of Jessie Williams as an O-lineman? Jesse is my vote for this year's "make their ass quit award" nominee.

  • In 2010 we did not have a vocal leader on Offense or Defense. No one stepped up and took that role. Last year Hightower, Barron, and TR took those roles, and to some extent so did guys like AJ, Barrett Jones, Chapman, and Vlachos. This year, by all indications, AJ has taken command of this team. He is the leader, and that is a role he wants. We still need someone who wants that job on defense. Nico can do it, Lester can do it, Vinnie and DePriest might be a bit new for it, and while Jesse might be a scary dude, nothing I have seen about him to date makes me think "leader". I really think it is on Nico and Lester. They need to take control of that defense.

Don't disagree at all. Frankly, I think Nico is the most likely candidate on the D, but I think it's also important for Lester to embrace that role.

Yes - Nico is going to kill somebody this year.

Based on your theory the 2010 team shouldve been better than the 2011 team. The 10 team had all the people no one wanted to deal with that the 11 team had plus Julio, Ingram and Dareus. Bama got better in 2011 after losing a bunch of scary guys. Especially on offense.

That leads me to believe that leadership is far more important. Alabama under Nick Saban will always have talent. Leadership is the key.
