I'm Encouraged (Long)

  • I know a lot of people in our fan base don't really understand basketball (down vote me all you want, but having football intelligence does not equate to basket intelligence at all), so not many will want to hear this and will call it sunshine pumping; I have been really encouraged with this season.

Before the season, I saw a roster that wasn't better than last year's roster; quite frankly it is worse. Have our young perimeter guys improved? Absolutely. Does it matter much? No, not really. JaMychael Green might have had some character issues, but the guy brought something to our team that is absolutely critical over the long haul of a season: a big guy that is capable of playing good defense and offense. Add losing Tony Mitchell, and we lost a lot only adding a freshman who is without a doubt talented, but obviously needs time in the weight room and time to adjust to the college game.

Before the season, I saw a roster that would only make the NCAA tournament if we completely avoided injuries; if one of our big guys went down (especially one of the 7 footers), forget making the NCAA tournament unless Grant coached the season of his life. Right now, we got one big guy who, though he has defensive and offensive physical abilities, doesn't truly have the basketball IQ to be depended on throughout a game, and we have one big guy who, quite frankly, can only shoot a left hook shot. I don't care how talented your guards are. If that is all you have to consistently rebound, play low post defense, pass from the low post, and score from the low post, you aren't going to have a consistent basketball team. Our guard play has been truly outstanding to keep us on the bubble.

Next year we have our talented guards with one more year experience, Anthony Grant with one more year experience (I believe he still isn't comfortable in this program compared to other coaches around the league, nor can anybody expect him to be this early), and some improved front court depth is a very dangerous team barring no bad luck with injuries.

We will have all of that next year. If Grant can't at least get into the tournament with next year's situation, then I will lean towards the crowd that says our program isn't going in the right direction. Nonetheless, I believe Anthony Grant is absolutely the best Head Coach our program could hope for. Is he perfect right now? No, but he is better than Gottfried EVER was. Yes, I'm aware that Gottfried got us to the Elite 8, but Gottfried won the wrong way IMO. Gottfried was willing to get down and dirty. We not only have a good man leading our program; we have a man that knows how to lead a basketball program to long-term success.

Be patient with Grant. Also, realize that if you think our basketball team's performance this year warrants Anthony Grant being fired, you probably think you know a lot more about basketball than you actually do.

  • He has to take the reigns off of the guys offensively and let them play. If that doesn't change neither will our performances.

  • I love when folks start threads with the whole "I know more about this than you do" BS.

I saw this team up close tonight. They don't communicate. They don't play hard for 40 minutes. The bench looks like a morgue. We're out of control and play with no purpose offensively. We somehow have two bigs that can't get off the floor.

I'm not being a doom and gloomer. It is what it is. This staff has one more year to make the tournament and win a game there. This team's basketball IQ is almost nonexistent. Calls that would've gotten most coaches ejected barely drew a yawn from our 2 million dollar man.

    I'm sick of this sh*t.

Another year like this and grant is gone. Roster issues are his fault as well. I think coach grant is ah excellent defensive coach and a pretty good recruiter but the guy has got to get some help with the offense or he won't be here much longer.

I'm with you man. Grants gotta get some excitement in the program. Grant, the bench, and the whole dang coliseum for that matter looks like their attending a dad gum funeral 90% of the time. Teams and fanbases take the personality of their coaches.

    rsfields31

  • The only thing I'm encouraged about is that this team doesn't quit.
Which frankly defies logic because they (and the coach) often appear so disinterested and unmotivated at other times in the games. Tonight and many other games this season would've ended up being 20+ point losses.

Not sure which one frustrates me more...

Some of the calls tonight were borderline corrupt. I almost wonder if he's said something behind closed doors to get the league pissed off at him.

The "foul" on the Henderson 3. The double foul on the baseline. The out of bounds call early in the 2nd half. Just inexplicably bad calls. No reaction. None.

Our roster problems are a lot more indicative of how difficult it is to recruit at our program, and how few quality big men our state has produced recently. I don't care how much money you put into a sport that doesn't actually require much money to be successful; if you can't get fans in the seats during November and December (naturally I'm not focused on basketball at that time of the year either), then you aren't going to tell recruits with a straight face that our fans care about basketball more than the next program. Recruits want to go somewhere where they are the big guy on campus (especially basketball players who are the most egotistical of any athlete). When a four star basketball player who gets significant playing time as a freshman and sophomore gets less attention from fans than a five star football player who is currently getting redshirted, the fans can't say they really care about basketball more than any other football school. And don't give me the tired old story that wins will put fans in the seats; our football program put fans in the seats when we were in probation. Kentucky packs out their house, and they are beyond mediocre this year.

Oh yeah. You obviously don't realize how long it takes to get comfortable as 1.an outsider and 2.an African American basketball coach at this school and this state. I wouldn't be 100% comfortable in his situation either. He is probably going to have three 20 win seasons (something we haven't done in over 20 years), and his program's fan base is calling for his head. And you say he should be comfortable right now? Unbelievable. If you expect him to change this culture to build a base for long-term success in 4 years, then you are extremely delusional and need to lower your short-term expectations in relation to our basketball program just a bit.

Exactly why we need a coach who can bring excitement to our program thank you for proving my point. You do also realize that recruiting hasn't been grants problem right? It's development. Grant has recruited exceptionally well since he's been here, maybe not so much when it comes to depth. Alabama has plenty of basketball talent and so do southern states surrounding it. Basketball isn't like football, there's only about 12 scholarship players on the roster so that leaves a lot of talent out there. I know we are a football school but we are a hungry fan base, wins and excitement about our program will put people in the seats. Excuses for grant are getting old and irrelevant .

I think that's all bunk but for the sake of debate...
If he truly feels uncomfortable, that falls as much on him, if not more, than it does the fanbase. It's a two way street.
I distinctly remember the ovations he got in his first seasons even during the home games of the nit. This fanbase was itching to buy in to him and wrp him up with support.
But to this day, and what i think is one of his biggest failures, he has opted not to foster that pr and fan excitement. Not only has his on court product become unenthused, so has his persona. We hardly know the guy and cannot welcome him, because he won't open up to and energize the fanbase.

Dude needs to come out of his shell/ comfort zone. There's still a majority of fans who want him to suceed. Put an exciting winning brand of basketball on the court and its not too late. But next year is do or move on for him. Maybe it's unfortunate that a coach at a major D1 school has to do the rah-rah thing, but that's the reality of the Bama program. And if he and/or Moore didn't realize that during the hiring process and he's not willing to do it, then that's really an unfortunate marriage for both sides.

I have always been the first to say that using the race card as an excuse is ridiculous. I'm actually not using it as an excuse because I believe Grant has done a great job in his first four years knowing that we have only been able to successfully recruit guards because of geographic limitations the past few years. I'm just giving you a reason why he isn't as comfortable as you believe he should be. I don't like it that African Americans still have a fear that racism still is prevalent (I agree that it is pretty much non-existent), but I also realize that African Americans do have that fear, especially African Americans that were not raised in the deep south (Grant was raised in south Florida).

Also, my original "uncomfortable" statement was also relating to still not completely being comfortable recruiting to this school, which is frankly hard to recruit (the right way) too for basketball.

If a fan base is calling for his head the way he has consistently built our program, he should be uncomfortable because this is going to take time (more time than our fans are willing to admit). Now, if you want quick wins and immediate gratification, go get you another Gottfried who will recruit and coach like the rest of college basketball (which is the dirtiest sport at any level in the world).

  • The 3 out of 4 20 win season stat is so overused. The SEC has been below average since Florida's last national championship. Andy Kennedy has won something like 20 games in 5 of the last 6 years. Has he ever been to the tournament? The answer is no. So who cares if you win 20 regular season games in a mediocre/bad league if you can't make the NCAA Tournament.

Well said Lefty. Grant has been embraced by the fanbase and your memory is correct, I had season tickets for season 2 and he would get a standing ovation when he entered the arena. He does nothing to promote his program and embrace the fanbase, then add in some terrible losses in front of the home fans and its hard for the fanbase to be enthusiastic about the program.

  • i don't think Grant is uncomfortable. He's just not a great coach. It seems pretty clear to me: he is a good coach who has a lot to learn. If we give him ten years he might become a very good or even great coach for us. Some of our fans don't want to wait for a coach to "develop", and that's fine, but ultimately the Alabama fan base is focused on football and frankly some guys on a message board calling for his head means little when the culture doesn't emphasize winning now. As the expectations go, so goes Mal Moore. The fans demanded an elite football program, so the athletic department poured money into it and got the best coach available. Could they do the same with basketball? Yes. Will they? No. The fans aren't demanding it. I think Grant is going to be here for a while, and hopefully he will improve. It is what it is.
