I'm underwhelmed with the OC hire

  • Just being honest. Of course, I've never won 3 National Championships either so I'll trust the man that did.

To be fair, I would've been one of the men questioning the hire of Normal Dale, look how that turned out for the pint-sized Hickory Huskers.

To be honest, I wasn't real impressed with McElwain either but it worked out. Nuss is supposed to be an awesome QB coach (like McElwain) so I'm sure we won't miss a beat.

  • When you get right down to it who would have "overwhelmed" us?

One thing is for sure CNS isn't out to overwhelm us with coaching hires. He's out to overwhelm us on the recruiting trail and the football field.

Gus Malzahn was the "hottest" OC around. He was very overwhelming at one point. Now....today....Roll Tide.

Were you overwhelmed when McElwain was hired? My point is obvious. Does Coach Saban do ANYTHING without evaluating every detail...every angle? Uh no.

  • Who would have been a realistic home run hire in your opinion?

    Two words: Major Applewhite.

Really though, I do trust Saban because he obviously has a plan.

We ARE arrogant, we ARE better than you and Alabama IS the center of the college football universe. Get over it!

  • I appreciate your honesty, but like you said, Coach Saban knows exactly what he is doing. I remember the night that word leaked that Coach McElwain had been hired away from Fresno State. No one was overwhelmed. In fact, most media members and BOL members were too busy heaping praise on AU's hiring of Tony Franklin and called Coach Mac "a +C hire", "underwhelming", "mediocre", or "a reach". In the end, you have to hire the right coach, not the coach that will win the PR battle like AU.

Yes, but Major Applewhite hadn't previously worked with/for McElwain, Pat Hill, John L. Smith. I would guarantee you Saban talked with all 3 and got an in-depth opinion of his abilities. Another thing that sticks out to me is his work with QB's. Bulger, Smoker, Stanton, Jake Locker, Keith Price. It's impressive. I also love the fact that he's learned under Sarkisian for the last 2 years.

I've been a proponent of spicing up our passing game and going to something that resembles USC's O under Carroll/Chow/Sarkisian. Hopefully, Coach Nuss can help us improve both the passing game and red-zone efficiency.

My dad said the same thing. Let me ask you this....Were you impressed with hiring Jim McElwain from Fresno St? My dad said no and I said there you go. No matter who we get, it really doesn't matter as long as they can recruit and run an offense that is run oriented, incorporating the use of tight ends and receivers. Saban will tell whoever the OC is what plays he can and cannot use, so there really wouldn't be a hire that would have me jumping for joy. Everything will be fine. Trust our coach.

  • I LOVE this hire!! He hasn't been able to coach this type of ELITE talent we have here. And he's done very very well with 3 star talent at Udub.

I wasn't impressed with McElwain and that worked out very nicely.

    I am excited about Nuss.

Bottom line, like u stated... we don't need to question the man with 3 rings....and counting.

You add some sense to this thread.

Completely agree. Also, Saban sort of went away from what he normally does in a hiring situation when he hired Applewhite. I don't think he will venture from his "process" anymore. He sorta took a gamble and now he is going with proven OC's and positions coaches like he had previously done in the past and present. Guys that have connections to him and prove to be able to work in his system.

I think CNS learned from that one just like we all learn from mistakes.

    Who would have overwhelmed you?

He has as impressive of a resume as you can find in guys that run a pro-style offense. Anyone more experienced than Nussmeier that has had success is most likely not looking for a lateral move to be an OC with us but instead looking to become a head coach. Plus, if a candidate like Chryst or Pep came to Bama we would have them at a max of 1 season as these guys are ready for the next step.

Nussmeier is a perfect fit in regards to the offenses he has worked in as well as a perfect fit in regards to where he is in his career.
