In Honor of the 100th Year of Tide Hoops -- My All-Time Team

  • Here is my trip down memory lane, considering only the modern era (starting in 1970 and beyond), I gave preference to players who stayed 4 years (or 3 in a couple of cases) and I saw all of these players play on TV, except for Wendell Hudson & Ray Odums.

    1st Team
    Head Coach: Wimp Sanderson
    Center: Leon Douglas
    Power Forward: Reggie King
    Small Forward: Robert Horry
    Shooting Guard: Hollywood Robinson
    Point Guard: Terry Coner

    2nd Team
    Head Coach: C.M. Newton
    Center: Erwin Dudley
    Power Forward: Wendell Hudson
    Small Forward: Derrick McKey
    Shooting Guard: Charles Cleveland
Point Guard: Trevor Releford (assuming he stays for his senior season)

    3rd Team
    Center: Bobby Lee Hurt
    Power Forward: Eddie Philips
    Small Forward: Kennedy Winston/Buck Johnson
    Shooting Guard: T.R. Dunn
    Point Guard: Ray Odums

    Honorable Mention

Center: Jamareo Davidson, Roy Rogers, David Benoit.
Power Forward: Richard Hendrix, JaMychael Green, Melvin Cheatum, Antonio McDyess, Michael Ansley, Chuck Davis, Jason Caffey.
Small Forward: Eric Washington, Tony Mitchell, Alonzo Gee, Ken Johnson, Jim Farmer, Latrell Spreewell, Mykal Riley.
Shooting Guard: Brian Williams, Robert Scott, Earnest Shelton, Rod Grizzard, Mike Davis, Mark Gottfried.
Point Guard: Ennis Whatley, Ron Steele (pre-injury), Mo Williams, Anthony Murray, Gary Waites, Antoine Pettway, Eric Richardson.

Feel free to comment or make your own list. However, including the honorable mentions, this is almost a comprehensive look at our best players throughout our program's history. In fact, I used the Tide career records section to make sure I included all major contributors in the categories of points scored, rebounds, assists, steals & blocked shots. RTR!!!

  • One thing that everyone is so frustrated about this year, is that CAG hasn't brought in a scoring, low post player in his tenure and one thing you can notice about our program's history, is we've always seemed to have that type of player.

Also, looking at our history, we have been a little light in true centers (but our tradition of strength at the power forward position has usually covered that) and shooting guards.

That is my take, what does everyone else think? RTR!!!

  • Fun list.

For the sake of conversation, Derrick McKey and Antonio McDyess were the best 2 I've seen play at Bama. I'd have Mo 1st team. Did I miss David Benoit? He could really get up. I also loved what Marcus Webb did in his games against Shaq. Where's Walter Pitts? g

    Cervantes

  • The best play of Marcus Webbs' career was a baseline move that ended up with him dunking over Shaq in 1990 (I think?)...that was pretty much his lone highlight.

  • When healthy, Ronald Steele was the best pg to ever play at Alabama. Prime example of someone who absolutely should have gone pro early.

  • If you are talking about a true point guard that runs the offense and creates opportunities for other players Whatley Waites and Williams are all well ahead of Releford. Releford is a scorer 1st. I am biased toward Whatley. One of the most electrifying players back in the day and one of the reasons Bama started selling out games even in Bham

  • Only beef is I'd have Mo at the point for 1st team.

EW could not only light up the scoreboard, but the crowd as well. One of my all time favorites. rolltideroll

  • I understand your bias towards four year players although McKey wasnt one of them (Thanks to Norby Walters). However, I have to disagree on having McDyess as an honorable mention. If you projected his last five games (three in the '95 SEC tourney and two in the '95 NCAA tourney) over the course of a career he would be hands down the best player to EVER play for UA. The reason I would make such a bold statement is that it was five consecutive games and not five intermittent games throughout his two year college career. When he finaly figured out how to stay out of foul trouble he was unstoppable on both ends of the floor.

  • Mike Nordholtz guard 6' 1". 1966: 18.4 PPG, FG % =52.8

    1967: 21.0 PPG, FG %=50.1

    1968: 20.0 PPG, FG %= 47.7

Mike was only a 60% + FT shooter but averaged 5+ rebounds . Freshmen could not play in 1965. This was also before the 3 point shot, but he was not a long range shooter.

  • Any team without ron steele first team is a joke. Ron was preseason all American the start of his junior year. Releford never had that. Don't fall into the what have you done fore me lately crowd

  • Trevor Releford is a great point guard but he is an honorable mention all time. He is not better than Mo Williams, Ronald Steele and Ennis Whatley. Of course, that's just my opinion.

  • Also Derrick McKey and Buck Johnson are the two best small forwards Alabama has ever had. Love Robert Horry but he ain't got nothing on McKey and Buck at the 3.

I loved Ron Steele, however, imo, he deferred too much as a frosh to the older players on the team at that time. We got upset in the opening round of the NCAA in the 5-12 game vs. Milwaukee-Wisconsin, coached by Bruce Pearl. He was great as a soph., especially in conference play after Chuck Davis went down with his season ending knee injury. That team knocked off a good Marquette team, when Jean Felix went off from 3 that day and gave eventually national runner-up UCLA all it could handle (especially considering some of the terrible calls that went against Jamereo Davidson that game) as Ron missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Unfortunately, I was at the beginning of the end for Ronald, as he sustained a high-ankle sprain at Notre Dame. That started his run of injuries and may have led to his knee problems, but I am no doctor.

Trevor is much better at finishing around the basket than Ron every was. Ron was probably a better passer overall, but Trevor is already our school's all-time steals leader and he has another season to play. They are about equal, high quality foul-shooters.

Considering the entire body of work, that is why I gave the nod to TRelly over Ronald. It was difficult to do, but TRelly has been the main man at the point for 3 years, Ronald was truly outstanding for only the conference play of his soph. year. Tough call, but I'm sticking with TRelly. RTR!!!

Only because their body of work was for only 2 years as compared to most of the others having 4 (or in a few cases 3) seasons. The other players rank much higher in the statistical categories than Dyess & Spree did. RTR!!!

Agreed, all three were high quality players. I liked the blocked shots and 3-point shooting that Horry provided in addition since they were all similar post players. McKey was an excellent defender as well. RTR!!!

Not trying to devalue Nordholtz's contributions, but I stated, that my list only included players after 1970 when all players, regardless of race were allowed to participate. RTR!!!

Agreed, we are splittling hairs here. I'm very fond of Mo, Ronald & Ennis, but Mo & Ennis only stayed for 2 seasons and I'm giving preference to players who stayed and contributed for 4 seasons. Mo, truly didn't play PG his soph season, Pett did and Mo slid over to the shooting guard spot. Mo did not have a good soph season, but he was great as a frosh leading us to a conference title. Ennis was also more successful as a frosh than as a soph. Very entertaining player, excellent passer and our all-time assist leader by per game average. That is why I selected TRelly. RTR!!!

Gottfried destroyed Mo's sophomore season by killing team chemistry. First the transition of Mo from point to the 2 during games. Mo hated that transition and resented it. It got worse when Kennedy Winston's suspension ended and Gottfried inserted him in the rotation. Mo couldn't wait to get out of Tuscaloosa.

By the way, Releford is a great point guard. He unfortunately has been put in a position where he has to be more of a scorer than a distributor. If he had more complimentary players around him then we would see what type of point guard he really is. He was known as a pass first point guard before he arrived at Alabama. Hopefully he will get the opportunity to showcase that skill set before he leaves Alabama.

Steele was a monster. No question he ranks as one of the best who ever played at Alabama.

  • Where is Thalamus McGee ? : )
Seriously - on a team with Horry , Benoit, Sprewell - Melvin Cheatum was the go to guy and has to be in the top 3-4 forwards at Bama. My favorites were Buck Johnson ( smooth) and Eddie Phillips. The Bama teams of the late 70's and 80's were filled with B'ham talent- Enimo , Buck, Eddie, et.al. The fall in local high school talent has hurt Bama.
