Interesting prognostication of the future SEC...

  • I'm not a huge fan of Clay Travis, but I think his future SEC outlook is pretty good. I like the way he has this playing out.

  • When we go into a state and get one university there, it ought to be the state's flagship institution. No if's and's or but's. I don't mind having MSU and Auburn becasue we have eac state's flagship school. FSU and Clemson would have been fine with me for the same reason. aTm is OK, because it has its own unique history and it is the state of Texas (Texas Tech would not have been fine with me).

To add Va Tech and NCState is to fail twice. I don't think we'll ever get UNC, but I dont' think we should take their little brother.

Disagree about Va Tech is a fail. They have proven they can play big boy ball. They have gone almost a whole decade with nothing but 10 win seasons which I believe is pretty good, and with them being in the SEC they could get a lot more good recruits. NC State might be a fail, but Va Tech, no way

  • Wow. Travis makes some compelling, cogent arguments in the piece. I don't agree with everything, but taken as a whole it seems very reasonable. I think you would have to have the two final four games in similar stadiums. For example, the East and South in Atlanta and the Central and West in Dallas and then the CG in New Orleans. If you had one of the games outside in Dec. and the other semifinal indoors, at least one fanbase and possibly eight would be bitching. This is the SEC, afterall.

I also think that there would have to be some reasonable way of determining what the semifinal matchups should be every year. That is, that I don't think that the semifinals should be static. Probably the highest ranked divisional champ should play the lowest and the 2nd and 3rd highest ranked divisional champ should play. It would rotate, but that seems to be the most fair. I'm all for it.

  • That is certainly more viable than other scenarios. I do not see where there is a rule basis for adding an extra game to the 4 semi-finalists..And one note about his added teams--the ACC buyout is brutal and Va Tech and UV have already been told by their state officials they could not be separated like A+M and Texas..So, what two teams after that?

  • Swap GA and Vatech and you have the appalachian, coastal, gulf (i was thinking dixie here but PC people would nix that) and river (ok the aggies only have the brazos but piss on them) divisions :)

  • Putting Ole Miss and Miss St with Alabama and Auburn would probably not sit well with the two Mississippi schools. Would they ever have a realistic chance at a conference championship, or even a decent bowl game? Travis may be right about the 16 teams (Va Tech might be okay, but the SEC should be able to do better than N C State), but I think his predicted divisions need significant tweaking. I'm glad I 'm not having to make those decisions.

  • I think divisional round games should and would be hosted by highest seeds and not neutral site. Same argument as plus-one: rewards higher seed and it would be hard to sell-out a Cowboys Stadium IMO.

I agree 100%. I'll also add that, being here in Jacksonville where the ACC championship was held for so long, I can say that the Hokies are as enthusiastic, loyal, dedicated and gracious a fanbase as you can find. They travel very well and they love their football. I would be thrilled if we got Va Tech in the conference.
