Is New Bowl Agrement a Death Knell for ACC?

  • What about the Big East and ND? Roll Tide!

College football -- Big 12-SEC bowl a death knell for ACC? - ESPN

The Big 12 and SEC are starting their version of the Rose Bowl. And that's bad news for the ACC and Big East.

  • The makes me very happy. I grew up loving the Sugar bowl & the BCS killed that bowl for me with the match ups. the Big East & ACC has no right to be given a BCS game because there 11-1 or whatever the record teams SUCK & I'm sick of it ruining the bowl season & I don't want to see BSU or any other team that plays 1 average team a year get in against a good team that earned the right to play in a big bowl.

  • Frankly, I don't know what all the hype is about. This is nothing more than a political move. As I posted in another thread, if this agreement had been put into place 20 years ago, this game still would have never been played yet. There's no reason to get excited about a game that will never, ever be played. It's just politics. Now, to whatever extent that this political move will help ensure that the final playoff agreement includes the best four teams in the country and not just the top four conference champions (like the B1G wants)...that's great. But again, in 20 years from now we will still be waiting for that first SEC-Big 12 champion matchup to be played in the Sugar Bowl.

The ACC, Big East, and independents are finished. The better programs in the ACC will he after an opportunity with another conference in a big way now. Notre Dame is about to he forced into a conference imo. No way they survive otherwise. The Big East might as well become a basketball only conference. Their days of relevance (what little they had) are over.

It could actually end up being a pretty good game, but keep in mind that in most years what we will likely be seeing is a game between the two second place teams. And in the case of the SEC, maybe even a third place team. If we had a 4 team playoff of the top four teams last year, and this agreement had been in place also, what game would we likely have seen in the Sugar Bowl?

    Arkansas vs. Kansas State.

Not a bad game, but nothing I'm going to get excited about.

And what if the rules of the playoff had said conference champions only?

    Alabama vs. Kansas State.

Sorry guys, but color me unimpressed with that matchup.

It never was about the game. It's about power, and we have it. If the Big Ten and Pac 10 want to play by our rules, great. If they don't, we've formed an alliance with second best football conference in America, and we will do our own thing which would cripple the little ten and pac 10. We don't need them, they need us. We are college football. We are the most watched, the most drafted, the most recognized, the most decorated, and THE dominant conference in the history of the sport. If the SEC and Big 12 were to form their own power conference, the college football landscape would totally swing in our favor and the weak conferences know that. It would look something like this:

    1) Power Conference
    ...
    ...
    2) What's left of D1
    3) Division 2
    4) Division 3

That would not be good for them, not at all. Jmo

  • Now it seems clear why FSU wants out of the ACC. They had to know this agreement was coming. Congrats ACC you are now the best basketball conference around by adding Pitt & Syracuse. LOL

We realize that, but many in the media still haven't quite caught on. Lots of articles on various sites, including ESPN, although talking about the politics of the move, touting the game itself.

An SEC/Big 12 Conference would totally kill football imo. What would that accomplish really? It would mean only a handful of football games would be worth watching. College football is the best regular season in sports. It doesn't need to be watered down by a Power Conference. Why not just go to an NFL playoff model if that is the plan?

I completely disagree. What waters down college football is weak conferences and weak scheduling. What seperates the NFL from every other sport, and league, is that every week is a big game. A Power Conference would give us that. No more cry babies. No more easy roads to championships. Real football, week in and week out. jmo

  • Nope brother that is backwards thinking. I think a lot would get a huge dose of reality. If we did indeed make college football into the NFL's minor league. Would absolutely turn a lot of people off. A lot of the tradition's that college football was built on. Would be reduced to 16-20 teams that only care about themselves. Yep.... that sounds like a great overall plan! LMAO

& if u think every NFL game is a big game. Then I don't know how to comment on that statement really. People talk about the NFL like it's the end all be all. But then turn around & bitch & cry because a wild card team wins a Super Bowl for gods sake! Which is it people? The whole system is never gonna be perfect for everyone.

I've never heard someone whine about a wild card team winning the super bowl. Wild card teams have to win four consecutive games against the leagues elite to be crowned Champs, which is exactly my point. There are no Georgia States in the NFL. Every week their opponent cam beat them. Every game is competitive.

  • Then u haven't paid attention to the last two years on here. Numerous posts about the Packers & Giants winning. Despite not being the best two teams at the time. Yep... we get that argument every year. U must have your head in the sand that time of the year. LOL

I hear what you are saying but you are defining the future by capturing a small moment in a larger history of dominance and awful Bowl Games featuring our best teams. Just like the Rose bowl gets to pick its participants first, this will allow this game to do the same. Additionally, this game that would often pit the second best team in each conference in late new year's day matchup would still be better than 90% of the forced bowl matchups in the bowl season. So while this is more about positioning than the actual game, it still will produce a pretty good game.

The game will played every year. It is not limited to champions. If both, or one, has a team in the playoffs or bcs champ game then the next best team goes.

We woul have played a big 12 team instead of utah as an example.

    scottchap

  • Imo on the surface it looks like a good move. But for this to sustain over the long haul. We need the level of Big 12 football to improve a lot. Texas needs to be Texas once again. & OU needs to actually be a title contender most years. For this to look like a good move. If the Big 12/SEC champs would be in the playoff anyways most years. Not many will be excited over another Cotton Bowl type matchup. Unless it involves "certain" teams from these two leagues.

You missed my point entirely. Of course the actual game itself will be played. It will never, EVER, be between the two conference champions. Not only that, it will RARELY ever have even one conference champion in the game. And if the playoff takes the top four teams, last year it would have been the 3rd best team from the SEC...Arkansas...against Kansas State.
