Is Ole Mi$$ Recruiting Above Board ?

  • erisabama said...

So now we're taking the Barnesque approach of assuming we get all of our stars legitimately (Recall Saban's 08 class came after a worse year than Ole Sis just had), but also suggesting others are probably cheating if they do a good job???

I was thinking the same thing. Everyone dogs the barners (deservedly so) for doing this. Pot meet kettle. It's not insane to think Freeze could recruit good players. [black helicopter]

  • I grew up in Illinois up by the Wisconsin border.....NIU country. Anyway, after visiting a few midwest campuses and bundling up in four layers of clothing to track across their campus...........I fondly recall my first visit to Tuscaloosa.....it was in the spring and the scenery was fantastic in more ways than one.

Point is......Ole Miss may not have a winning tradition, but otherwise I can see why they are having success with the midwest recruits who want to play in the SEC. Bottom line - Alabama can't take everyone.

I think the women there help their cause!

Beautiful women, the Grove, a chance to play and probably be a starter at their position? Sure...why not!

How is it they are getting 5 stars from Indiana and Illinois ? There is nothing to draw them to Ole Miss . I wonder if Hugh Freeze is the next Rick Stansbury ?

They are the hottest recruiting team in the country right now. You know they whitewash those trees down at the Grove, and they should just paint them red, because those trees are on fire with the way they are recruiting. I know that no one else is willing to say this, but if you had to rank the top 3 recruiting head coaches in the country right now, it would be Nick Saban, Hugh Freeze, and Urban Meyer with Freeze closing in fast. I've never met Hugh Freeze, but something tells me that if I were an eskimo, he could sell ice to me.

Some people bring a knife to a gun fight. Mark Richt brings a Super Soaker 2000.

  • I don't know if anything shady is going on but I am happy OM is coming back. The conference is better when they are competitive imo. I still remember the great games between Bear and Vaught in he 60's It was a fun time for me.

  • I haven't looked at it that closely, but it is probably a combination of things.

They are a program on the rise, with a good coach. The top recruit in the country has been talking about them positively for over a year now. He is expected to sign there. That will cause other players to look at Ole Miss as well.

The campus is very nice and is definitely a selling point. Have you heard CHF interviewed, he is very convincing and uses the word "process" more than Saban if that is possible.

Not saying this is the case but are these 5*'s likely to qualify? If not, they are probably being slow played or flat out passed over by slightly lower ranked players that are more likely to qualify. We have seen it hundreds of times where a school recruits lights out by all appearances and very few of the top recruits make it into school. These classes never pan out to much success. It happened at Alabama under Dubose, and FSU has been suffering from this for years. Auburn the last few years has had highly ranked classes but the players either don't get in or flush out because they weren't equipped for success in college.

I'm just saying when they sign RN and Conner they will have a top 5 class ... I know their coach
is good , but players just don't pass up Ohio St , LSU and such for Ole Miss . He did not have the
" sex appeal " that a big name coach has to bring in those sort of kids from all over .. I just don't
think something is right over there ..

When you're the leader for the number 1 recruit in America and the number 5 is in your back yard, it gives you leverage to present to a kid that they could be a part of the next special thing in CFB. Throw in that Hugh Freeze did a pretty good job of coaching up the talent they had, enough to take them to 6-6 and a bowl win and you have the ingredients for recruits to pay attention. The campus is a really nice, quaint, Southern campus, so i would submit that it's not far fetched that they have had a successul recruiting cycle. IMHO

  • I feel that if I say (without proof) that theirs is crooked, I have to say Saban's in 2007-2008 was also. I don't believe that to be true. I'd say they have a good coach who prob landed their normal 1-2(RN prob was a fluke from his brother), then they are taking advantage of UcheaT and *U being down and others having turmoil.

I'm sure they could have $$$ flowing, but I can see a scenario where it isn't.

You could also throw playing time into that equation.

Comparing Alabama and Ole Miss' programs when Saban and Freeze came in is pure foolishness. Even if Alabama was down from the sanctions when Saban came in we were still better than Ole Miss has ever been, including now with Freeze. Ole Miss is a high school program compared to Alabama in terms of facilities, fan support and everything in general. We have more to sell than they ever will, even in the lean times when Saban first arrived. In our probation years under Shula we beat them. Same can be said about LSU, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. All of those programs are better than Ole Miss and have much more to offer. As much as I hate them, Jordan Hare is a much better home field advantage than Vaught Hemingway.

Compared to Indiana and Illinois they have a lot to offer. Not saying they are legit but there is really no reason they shouldn't be able to get some good kids from those areas.

    plus
