Is the SEC too dominant?

  • A few guys had this discussion yesterday and it led to some interesting points. I want to know what you guys think.

Question: Is the SEC so dominant right now that it's hurting College Football as a whole? Is it healthier for CFB if teams like Texas, Oklahoma, Oregonn USC and FSU are good year in/year out so the interest in CFB is at its max?

Think about it. We all love how the SEC is absolutely crushing it right now, but what about the rest of the country? The 2012 college football season was 95% SEC / 5% Notre Dame. Maximum exposure. National signing day coverage was about 90-95% SEC as well. All you heard about was Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, Georgia, Arkansas, even some Auburn. Hell, the two special guest analyst were Dooley and Chizik, two subpar SEC coaches...but still, they were SEC coaches and they were on national television promoting the SEC brand.

Think about how many Heisman winners we've had in the last few years.
Think about the national championship streak.
Think about the # of high ranked SEC teams at the end of the year.

It's incredible. As an SEC fan, I couldn't be happier. BUT....

It's like the SEC has reached Alexander Shunnarah status in terms of coverage. We have so much exposure that you can't avoid us. It's overkill. But is the overkill good or bad? Is it so dominant that the rest of the CFB nation will start to give up?

Take your SEC colored glasses off and try to observe this from the outside.

P.S. How many Shunnarah billboards are in your town?

  • I don't care if it pisses people off or not. Maybe one of those teams outside the SEC should step up and try to stop it. I haven't seen a capable team yet. Oregon would have been a much better game than ND.

  • I think there are two parts of your question. Is it better for college football when texas, usc, oklahoma and fsu are great year in and year out? Absolutely and there is no denying it.

But them being down right now has nothing to do with the sec being on top. They arent losing to sec teams right now. They are getting beat by iowa st and nc states of the world.

Sure, the sec is dominant and has the best players, but its more like the sec is filling the void left by these blue bloods that arent consistent right now. Its not like all sec NC teams went undefeated. The majority lost a game. If those blue bloods were consistent then the sec probably doesnt even get a chance to play for a nc in a few of those 7 years.

I did and I don't care about coverage or what the rest of college football thinks. If another team from another conference can step up then it will stop....until then it's going to continue.

  • Wouldn't it be a better question to ask why other conferences/teams aren't willing to work as hard as the SEC teams to be more competitive. This is the problem in our school systems today. Instead of getting the kids up to the top tier standards, we lower the standards and pull the upper tier (in learning) students down to the lower standards. We saw this take place in recruiting a few years back when Tubberville and Richt complained about Urban Myers and Saban going out and visiting the schools in the spring. So what happened? The SEC passed a rule prohibiting the head coaches from going and evaluating in the spring and Georgia and Auburn both recruited a bunch of thugs because they haven't properly evaluated the character of the players they recruited. So instead of stepping up, they tried to drag Bama and Florida down to their levels because they were not willing to work as hard for the millions they were being paid. It cost Tubberville his job and nearly cost Richt his job. People should strive to be the best and reach the top instead of pulling everyone else down to their level i.e. what the Democrats are trying to do with our tax system and initative of the American people. If other schools and/or conferences want to be competitive with the SEC, they need to do what the SEC teams are doing instead of complaining about what is taking place in the SEC. Several times over the years in major league baseball, people complained about the Yankees dominating in baseball and buying players. Look what is happening now, several teams have passed the Yankees because they did what was necessary to get to the next level. Enjoy the good times. I do and I am not about to apologize to anyone for the success of Bama. As the old Smith Barney ad says "we have earned it".

No, the SEC is not too dominate. There are schools within the SEC that are dominate and frankly, i'm ok with them continuing to dominate the landscape. early on in college football, it was the Ivy league schools dominating, then it was the northern schools, and USC, then whoever went to the Rose Bowl - and that's when Bama made inroads.... we built that line and that's when it all started for the south.

right now, the southern schools are dominating. the power "may" shift, but it may never completely turn to another conference or area of the country due in part to the number of pure skill level players in the south. we just have the goods here - and that will always attract the best coaches.

I hope it continues and i hope they quit. i could live just fine beating up on the SEC teams. although, i do want a few more chances at ND and Texas. we owe those guys a few more "L's".

Roll Tide - here's to yet another dominating year and making their asses quit.

  • Don't ever worry about being too good. Same with us winning back-to-back NCs. Does that mean we should step aside and let someone else have 2013? Hell no. Take it as long as you can. Then when CNS leaves get another one in here and win more NCs. Its who we are I don't care about the rest of them.

  • Two schools to keep an eye that could make a run for the other schools. ND & OSU. Both have the overall tradition. & everything else needed to get back quickly. & UM having won BCS Titles & recruited in the SEC. Could make things interesting in that league. I don't think some of these other schools will recover very quickly under the current landscape of college football. Unless the whole University as a whole buys into a change. & these would include. Texas, USC, Oklahoma, Miami, FSU etc.

Born in Montgomery. School at Bama. Live in Tuscaloosa. Tide Pride Season Ticket holder for football and basketball. Just happen to grow up watching UNC basketball. I'm a New York Mets fan too.

    Don't waste your time pal.

This is not an anti-SEC post. Read carefully. Post was made to generate discussion.

  • I think this thread brings up some good points. Are their negative's on the college football scene because the SEC is so dominant?

One of the names that comes to mind is Bret Bielema hitting the high road to ARK from the Big10 and Wisconsin. He used to slam the SEC by stating that they "didn't want to recruit the way that Southern teams did it." Draw your own conclusions, but he was talking about money going under the table and back room deals IMO.

Two years after that statement he's now in the SEC West I think partially because he realized that if you can't beat them join them.

One theory: Let's not be naive and think that things don't go on in every SEC program that administrations don't turn their heads at because they are in some ways uncontrollable. Schools do what they can, but 18 year olds ware easily swayed and in the south, where football is king, their are more things to sway them with. Therefore the athletes have stayed here and joined the party. The results on the field, draft stock, and resources and facilities available to them are also a "selling" point.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. Oh, and in Alabama' case, the fact that we have won three out of the last four doesn't hurt either.

And you dont think the same things that go on in "every SEC program" also go on in every program in the country. It's not just the SEC I can assure you.

  • Honestly, I think this SEC run of dominance has been the best thing to happen to college football since major tv contracts. Here is why:

For a long time fans of college football have wanted a fair way to decide the National Champion. For nearly a century, the National Champion was a point of great debate and contention. The BCS was introduced. While a step in the right direction, it still wasn't the fix. We saw Auburn go undefeated, look more deserving than Oklahoma, but get left out of the BCS Championship game. The SEC pushed for a playoff. The other power conferences said no, because a majority of voters come out of the Big 10 and Pac 12. Well, the SEC in turn went on a run of historic proportions. This has prompted the other conferences to wake up, and get us a playoff system. Now we can have the top 4 teams at the end of the year play it out.

SEC dominance has lead to a college football climate where we will have the best of both worlds. The regular season still counts, because only 4 teams get in. However, one slip up in a brutal conference schedule won't knock you out (like it almost did us for the last 2 years). College Football is more profitable than ever, and is still on the rise. Our conference has done that.
