I'm certainly no expert on legal matters but I'm thinking he'll actually serve less than 180 days. However, Goodell might help fill in the gap between McClain's release and the end of the season.

McClain was found guilty of reckless endangerment, menacing, third-degree assault and firing a gun in city limits.

Looks like his attorney is appealing and he'll get a jury trial in circuit court. If a jury of Alabama fans -- er, I mean, his peers - hears the case maybe he will either (1) get off entirely or (2) only be convicted on some counts, thus having a lower maximum sentence.
Also, if he's going to go get in line on the docket for a circuit court jury trial, I'd be shocked if this is resolved before the season is over, much less before it starts. And I'd be equally surprised if Goodell takes any action before the criminal justice system runs its course. He could also plead to a misdemeanor with a suspended sentence or something.
Sounds like what happened today is the top end of worst case scenario for him, and he has lots of legal/practical opportunities to mitigate that before all is said and done.
