Jaguars source on OC candidate Koetter's time in Jax...

  • "Dirk is a nice guy and really smart. Everybody really likes him. He did the best he could with our offensive weapons. Very good in the run game."

Yeah, but does he know that Coach Saban isn't conservative? (vbg)

  • Thanks TR. As for the run game, doesn't hurt that he had his one huge weapon for that section of the playbook. Of course, we know well that's only part of the process of having a good running game.

  • TR, is he your favorite candidate that's been reported at this point or is there someone else out there that you like?

  • Eli Gold a little while ago discussed how Saban apparently gave a very long answer in New Orleans about how he shouldn't be considered a conservative coach. How Saban likes to throw the ball, especially when that's the best way to beat the other team. How he wanted to throw it more in the first game against LSwho.

I found that interesting considering Koetter is interviewing. He is an OC that likes to throw the football. I'm pretty sure both Boise and Arizona St averaged either close to or over 300 yards passing per game. His first years at Jax they were very successful at throwing the ball around. Eventually the QB play took its toll on his offense.

  • At one time Dirk was known as a "vertical passing" guru. His teams at ASU put up a ton of points they just lost too many close games.

So if he was once known as a vertical passing guru and is now known as very good in the run game then that may just suit us very well.

  • Saban is not the 3 yards and a cloud of dust coach people think he is. He likes things balanced but he DEFINITELY isn't conservatve. We obviously are a pass first team based on the type offense we run and its Saban approved.
Doing what works is the best offense to have.

  • On Koetter's demeanor and work with quarterbacks:

"He's good as far as demeanor and relationships go. Dirk is reserved. Doesn't yell. He only worked with quarterbacks full time after Jack Del Rio was fired."

Based on the pool of guys being mentioned, give me the best quarterbacks coach. Don't think there will be much difference in what each likes to do scheme-wise.

That's very interesting. Saban really liked Sarkisian and Kiffen's offenses.

    I'm glad you mentioned this.

Saban has said that he wants to play to an offense's strengths, which is determined by the talent. If strong at QB and WR, he wants to throw (LSU 2001). If stronger at RB, he wants to run.

He questioned coaches that are determined to run when they don't have the talent to do so, or determined to pass when more equipped to run.

Looking at our RB talent the last few years, as well as other considerations, it's easy to understand why Bama has been run-oriented. He wants physical play, but that shouldn't be mistaken for a conservative offense.

Actually replaced McElwain as OC at Fresno. Impressive resume from QB coaching standpoint. Worked with Marc Bulger in St. Louis and Drew Stanton and Jeff Smoker at Michigan State. Nice job with Keith Price at UW this season. Definitely fits the Saban profile for OC/QBs.

We did fine with an OC from Fresno State before!

  • Somehow I think Saban's "I'm not conservative" remark was directed at recruits.

Maybe, but I took it as directed at the media. You're probably right though. Other schools have likely been telling recruits that and Coach just wanted to take the opportunity to underline how the game plan was certainly not conservative. +1 for you!

They all are. In addition to leading to wins, Saban wants more explosive plays because they lead to more explosive recruits.
