Ill use your own argument against you here - he hasn't been playing football and not taking the beating that said NFL safeties have taken since age 18.

You don't want to get started on rugby...

That is a fair point, and I am sure he will have a longer career than most as a result of it. Still, the guy hasn't played in a long time and it is a stretch to think that he will be better than a current 5 star. I think it is a cop out.

I play Rugby in Birmingham. I'm not very good but learning (not bad for a girl!). My true passion is ping pong.

How would the Wheeden story not support what people are saying? He played baseball for 7 years and came back to football and became a 1st round draft pick ahead of many qbs who played from high school right through college.

    Thank you!

    1) if he is at the peak performing age, then why is the average age of his position in the NFL younger than he currently is? That math doesn't work.

    2) & 3) He has been out of football for 10 years. Please tell me something that you did 10 years ago, that you could pick up and do on a professional/collegiate equivalent level. (Sex joke here)

Bringing up Brandon Weeded doesn't translate into "supporting your facts". Facts should support arguments and opinions. I'm not sure how you would support facts, with more facts?

I think I have pretty much countered everything brought up, so I suppose we will have to agree to disagree.

    1. Why are you talking about the NFL? We're not talking about the NFL. Last time I checked, Alabama isn't an NFL team. They're a D1 college football team. If this was the NFL, this wouldn't even be a discussion. Miller vs a 26 year old, seasoned, physical NFL safety is completely different than Miller vs a High School kid. He is at peak performance age. We're not talking about average NFL safety age.

    2) & 3) I'm not 6'4"....I'm not 225-230....I haven't been involved in professional sports the last 10 years of my life. Let's not try to compare me to a pro athlete.

BUT, take skiing for example...the gap between the most recent and last time that I've been skiing was 7+ years. When I was going once a year (when I was in elementary/middle/high school), I was skiing blue/blue-diamond and and some blacks (the "easy" ones). Last time I went, I spent a day on the green to get back into the swing of things, did about 2-3 days of green/blue/blue diamonds, and then the last day did a few blacks. It took me awhile, but I got back to my individual peak performance as a skiier. Now, I don't have to shed blocks and read coverages when I ski, but I was able to pick the fundamentals back up quickly, and then quickly hop back on the advanced slopes. So, if a 5'8" male who only played high school athletics can do something like that. Then a freak pro athlete should be able to handle himself.

And yes, Weeden and Weinke definitely support the facts. They were in the same situation as Jai, and look what happened.

I am well aware of the fact that Bama isn't a NFL team.

    Weeden doesn't have an H

It is a cop out/butt hurt excuse for us to say it's OK to miss out on Tony Conner because we have a 28 year old walk on waiting in the wings.

I'm not talking about Conner as a person. Hell, to be honest, I didn't even know who he was until today. I'm sure he's a phenomenal athlete and deserves the 5-star rating. I'm in this thread to support Jai Miller. Like I've said many times before. I've been supporting Miller for much longer than Feb 6th, 2013. This isn't some "oh yeah, we don't need 'em anyway....we've got Jai Miller" act. I've never once discredited Conner. I've only been pro-miller. Go back and read my posts.

Think about it....why would I be "butt-hurt" over this one individual player, but not say anything about the 5* Auburn and Ole Miss commits that we lost out on?

If we're going to be childish about this and post hashtags (we're not on twitter, instagram, vine or facebook) and also call the grammar police, then that's fine. Pretty sure when you start pulling the grammar police card, you don't have anything else valid to say.

It's not a cop out / butt hurt excuse when I've never said anything derogatory about this kid, only stating my support for another player.... a player that is one of the two points of discussion in this thread.

Thank you. Didn't he have a pick in the Super Bowl? But hey, he's not good since he's older than 26, the average age of an NFL safety.

I was talking average age. Please tell Ed I said "Hello" as well. Mark Barron is 23, there are outliers on both sides. Ed Reed is a freak.

he spelled Weeden wrong 4 times ITT, it bothered me.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Jai either, I hope he has a great spring and summer and contributes early and often. My main problem is with saying that it is ok missing out on 5 stars bc of Jai Miller.

Where in this, the original post, does it say anything about being OK we missed out on TC? It says, "Not down that we missed out but lots of oppurtunities for others to develope." Spelling errors left in tact. (g) I'm pretty sure that can be translated to say that he isn't particularly thrilled that we missed out on TC, but the fact we did may leave opportunities for others to develop, such as Jai Miller and whoever else. Your "attack" on the OP was based on the fact you misunderstood what he said in the first place. Is it likely that our staff or anyone on this board would have preferred JM over TC? Probably not. Is it still possible that JM can produce at a level equal to or greater than TC for us? Yes, it is possible. I think you're the one who is "butt hurt" because nobody seems to agree with you that it is impossible.

I think from a professional athlete's perspective, Tony Conner has more "prime" years ahead of him than Jai Miller does, who is in his late 20's.

Look, again, I'm not taking away from Jai will accomplish at UA, nor am I doubting him. All I am trying to say is that it is ridiculous to say that he is a better prospect than Conner on the day that Conner says no thanks to us given the difference in where they are in their lives.

I think the OP was just trying to make himself or us (I'm not sure) feel better about losing Conner by saying that Jai Miller may be a better prospect than him. And as another poster said above, if another fan base tried to pull that, we would give them hell over it. Why is that so hard to admit?

Who cares how many prime years he has left? If he starts for 2 years at Bama then that is as many as Conner was going to start.

You keep saying that late 20's puts him past the age of the best years for an NFL safety. I think that is up for debate. However, one thing that is 100 percent accurate is that 18 years old and just removed from HS puts you 5-7 years behind the best years for an NFL safety. So... I think Jai has a good chance of giving 2 really good years to Bama. Which is all Conner would of done anyway considering he wasn't going to start next year as a frosh.

The real question then is... which athlete is closer to prime years? 18 year old, HS player or 28 former pro athlete who gets to compete in spring ball against top level talent?

Chris Weinke and Brandon Weeden both say hello.

While you have point that the OP does come across as a little homerish & sour about losing out to Conner, you are pretty much wrong w/ your notion that it is irrational to think players can come back to a sport they excelled at in high school after years away from the sport in MLB/minor leagues. Weinke and Weeden both did so pretty successfully at a much more difficult position than Safety (which is why it took 2+ years before they took over the starting jobs)

Now, it's obvious that Jai has a long road ahead of him to be an impact player on our team, w/ a bunch of talented players w/ experience in front of him. But to say it is irrational to think he can succeed, especially considering he is both mature physically and mentally, is, well, irrational.

edit - I guess I'll be third in bringing up the Weinke/Weeden comparisons, lol

Add on Kelley Washington at UT made freshman all-american in 2001 as a 22 year old freshman after being taken in the 1997 baseball draft by the Florida Marlins.

I recall he gave us trouble on the field as a wide receiver, pretty much caught everything, but was a drama boy.

He went to the nfl in the third round to the Bengals, then New England in 2007, Eagles in 2010.

28 is up there no doubt, but he may wll be in his prime.

The problem is the closing window of any kind pro nfl career due ot age, presuming he is that good, which remains to be seen. As far fetched as that sounds, he no doubt has athelticism and good ball judgement having played in the majors. My guess is enrolling early nothing stops him from learning quickly and dedicating himself.

The best part of all this is he getting a first class education while we wait and see what happens. Lets revisit this little chat midway though the next season and see what becomes.

Then why is the average age of safeties in the NFL 26?

We are aren't talking rugby here, thank god.

    It says a few things.

    1) Football players get the crap kicked out of them. The avg NFL RB is younger than safeties.

    2) It says that coaches are willing to throw younger guys out in the line of fire to see what they have when 2 players are equal. The avg backup in the NFL is older than the starter. Surely, you don't think a 28 year oold backup in the NFL would have a worse career at UA than Conner if placed on the team right now?

    3) If you look at the pro bowl safeties this year you will see that only a couple of the 10 are under the 26 year old mark. So like I said, it tells me there are probably a bunch of young players that the coaches are willing to throw on the field to see what they can do i replace of more experienced players. Only Thomas and Berry

Also, if you want to look at the starting DBs in the game (who have the same avg starting age in the NFL as safeties) you will that many of them are over 26 (all except Petersen).

So in reality the average age of NFL starting DBs in 26 but the avg age of thosee in the pro bowl is closer to 30. That tells me there are a bunch of young guys that are going to be replaced with more young guys soon. Not b/c they have physically "peaked" but b/c they are looking to turn over players fast.
