John L. Smith to Arkansas...

  • Never thought when I interviewed Smith a short time back about Doug Nussmeier that he would be the head coach at Arkansas in 2012. Fun guy to talk to.

If you're Smith, heck yeah, you take the job on an interim basis. If Arkansas wins 11 or 12 games, good luck not giving Smith the job on a permanent basis. Not much of a gamble for John L. or Arkansas, short term. Fool's gold year in 2012, though, could put the Hogs in a lurch long-term.

Interview with Smith linked below for those who may have missed it.

    TRips: Getting to know Nussmeier

For insight on Doug Nussmeier, TRips tracked down the man who recruited, coached, hired and continues to serve as mentor to Alabamas new offensive coordinator ...

  • I guess it's a safe hire but for the life of me I don't understand why Arkansas didn't hire Butch Davis. Yes, UNC just got in trouble but wasn't he cleared of any wrongdoing? if Butch would take the job (he's an alum) they should have hired him.

Maybe, but the smell of the UNC situation is all over Davis and considering the dumpster fire Arkansas is trying to move on from, don't think they could go there.

I'll be interested to see if Long has the stones to go outside if Smith wins 11 games in 2012. Smith obviously thinks Long doesn't.

  • travis,
What would you do if you were Arkansas. I say their only options were to stay with someone on staff or go after someone like John Smith or McGee. I think John Smith was willing to do interim and no way McGee would do that so John Smith gets job. I think they have better chance getting a bigger name coach after season. Still think they should have went after Butch Davis.

  • I think Arkansas is at best a 9 win team this coming year. The media and their fans want us to believe they are significantly more talented than their recruiting has made them. I've heard constantly how they think they are a national title contender. They needed to improve significantly from last season to this season to make up the difference between them and Alabama and Lswho.

Their defense is on par with maybe Auburn in terms of talent in excution. Their offense is great against bad teams but struggles to produce against good teams, of which they will face a few.

Lastly, they are going to throw the ball even more this season with Paul running the O. All that will do is give teams like us more opportunities to run our offense on a short field.

Think you may be right re: Smith and McGee's willingness to do interim. If you're Smith it's worth the shot at this point in his career. Not like another opportunity at a BCS school was going to come around for him.

Assuming, of course, that Smith has no integrity or compulsion about leaving his alma mater 4 months into the job after gushing about how great it was to be home.

From Arky's perspective, however, I can't for the life of me figure out what this gets them that promoting an assistant from within to interim doesn't get them - other than a headache if Smith goes 10-2.

I'm guessing here's the problem Long had: new DC, so he wasn't an interim option and the OC's last name is Petrino, which tells you all you need to know about his chances.

Pre-Smith interim Taver Johnson, like the DC, is new to the staff after being hired in January. The perception is that Arkansas is a legitimate BCS contender for 2012 with no guarantees of being such beyond the season. Long felt like he had to have guy with BCS head coaching experience to give them the best chance at fulfilling expectations (while also showing the fan base that he did everything he could to make good of a bad situation).

All that said, I agree with your second sentence. If he wins 10 or 11, then what? Long-term, Smith getting the job would be a win for Arkansas opponents.

  • Arky struggles with bama bigtime, this may have been the year that petrino and company got over the hump. But if you go back to 2010 they had us beat and bama and our superior talent prevailed imo, this defense will be farther ahead of the curve than 2010 and the offense has the potential to be lethal. Anyway i would have said 50 50 with petrino, i say bama outright as of now.

So, in other words, Long got to Smith by process of elimination - which seems like a pretty terrible way to choose an SEC head coach.

Should have had the nads to go interim from within the staff, whoever that may be. If Brother Petrino's last name is a problem - or if his loyalty is in question - hard to see how keeping him on staff as the OC makes any more sense than just moving him up.

  • Here is the biggest reason you take the Job. John L. Smith will get paid $850,000 at Arkansas. At Weber State he was going to get paid $125,000 a Year. It was going to take him 7 years to make that kind of money at Weber State. He can now retire and let Paul Petrino take over if they have a good season.

A Petrino isn't gonna take over that job again. U can almost 100% take that to the bank. Chances are every coach on the Arky staff is coaching to pad their resume for the 2013 football season. Cause a new coach will no doubt equal a cleaning of the house.

Not really far fetched that they could lose to Bama and LSU, and win the rest plus a bowl game to go 11-2. Could Long really pull the trigger and prolong Arky's coaching turmoil after that? I seriously doubt it. Like you said I think 2012 could be fool's gold and Arky won't be a contender in the West any time soon.

  • If Smith has success at Arky this year you might as well change his name to Larry Coker Jr.

Agreed. Last year the pigs were lucky to beat Ole Miss, Vandy, TA&M and even had a tough time with Troy. They've done little in recruiting so they could go 7-5 this year very easily.

The reason they didn't promore an interim from with-in is b/c it would take time away from actual coaching.
They want the coaches to gameplan and coach, and an interim coach to manage the overall program and deal with the media.
