I think you are exactly right. No one except the most engaged fan knew who he was before cam, despite all that "inventing the wildcat" BS that came along with him. I tend to believe those offers he turned down were greatly exaggerated.
He had coattailed an 18-year-old boy to D1, then went midmajor, where no one knew who he was, then came to auburn because it was the best offer he could get.
