LSU Gametime

  • I know this subject has probably been brought up 1000 times but I couldn't find anything from previous posts.

The LSU game is still listed as TBA. Is there any chance that it would be a night game? I know that if CBS had the right of first refusal to this game then they would have already chosen it as a 2:30 game since they only do one primetime game per year. I remember reading somewhere that ESPN gets the second or third choice of the top 10 games of the year but I really have no idea how that works. Typically, we find out 2 weeks prior to games what the tv time will be but it seems that in this case, if CBS has the right to carry the game then they would go ahead and announce it as a 2:30 game.

Basically my question is: Is there any chance that ESPN could carry this game and therefore move it to primetime? And if not, why isn't it already listed as a 2:30 game?

    Thanks.

  • There is absolutely zero chance CBS does not air this game at 2:30pm. You have a better chance of being struck by lightning or winning the lottery than this game not being televised by CBS at 2:30pm.

  • Also, CBS may opt to have it prime time like the FL game at 7:00 PM.

Agreed. No way CBS is picking another game over the LSU-BAMA game.

  • I agree that if CBS has the opportunity to carry the game then they obvioulsy will. That's why I don't understand why they haven't gone ahead and announced it.

bamajes, I thought that CBS could only air one primetime as per the agreement with the SEC and ESPN. You would think it would be a no brainer to put the game at primetime if they could.

I'm just confused as to why a gametime has not been announced for what some are calling the "game of the century."

  • They only have one primetime game left. They are going to wait until the last minute. We have three games to play until wr play lsu. Lighten up.

  • The SEC has a network TV contract with CBS, a national cable deal with ESPN Networks and a regional syndication contract with ESPN Regional Television.

CBS has the rights to 12-15 regular season games and the conference championship. Up to two of those games can be non-conference games. CBS will always have the top choice of SEC games on a weekly basis. When CBS does a doubleheader that includes a primetime game, CBS can choose the top two games on a given weekend. When they do a doubleheader that includes a 12pm game, it must allow ESPN to reserve two games before selecting their next game.

ESPN Networks has the rights to remaining SEC home games, primarily prime time telecasts. ESPN Regional Television's primary syndicated game (aka SEC Network) will be in the early afternoon (12:21pm EST). ESPN has also reached syndication deals with CSS and the southeast-based FOX Sports regional networks for games. One game per team per season can be shown on a PPV or local TV basis.

CBS does not have any primetime games left.

They only have have the doubleheader weekend with a night game this past weekend. They reserved that weekend and announced it prior to the year and then ended up selecting UA-UF.

They have another doubleheader weekend which falls on the weekend we play MSU. That weekend they will have an 11:00 and 2:30 kick off double header. Again this was announced prior to the season.

Now to the OP, you talked about ESPN getting top choice a couple of times year by reserving a game. That was under the old contract. Under the new contract CBS gets top pick every week then ESPN gets next to distribute across their platforms. Then the leftovers go to Fox Sports and CSS and pay per view.

The game will be 2:30. CBS will announce it 2 weeks prior because they don't have to do it any earlier. They could take a 6 day waiting period but there is no reason for them to do that and because they have a limited amount of 6 days windows to use.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks DEH, that is the answer I was looking for.

By the way, the only reason I cared so much is because my wife's brother is getting married at 1:00 on November 5th so if it was a night game I would be able to fly to TTown and watch but since it's a 2:30 I'll just watch at home. Thanks.

The only other game that weekend that could be a decent matchup will be Auburn/LSU, so CBS will pick either that game or the Bama/Tennessee game. Whichever game CBS doesn't pick will be picked up by ESPN as a night game.
