LSwho myths

What it all comes down to with TM7 is that Alabama fans hated him for the same reason as Tebow and that was because it is all we ever heard about. Was he anywhere near the best corner in college? Heck no. I wouldn't even say top 10 maybe 20. Was he as bad as Alabama fans tried to act after the NC game? Heck no. Kid played with a ton of heart and LSU will miss his energy more than anything. So now LSU brings one returning starter from their secondary in the nickel defense.

I'm with you on that, it was more a case of overhyped vs. overrated. Take away the knucklehead-itis and I'll take TM on my team all day as a player.

Can't wait to get this thing kicked off, I'm sick of hypotheticals I'm ready to see it play out on the field! RTR

Jabrill Peppers...More I watch, the more I'm convinced he is the best player in the 2014 class. Barring injury, he will do special things.

The cover corner aspect of a cornerback is insignificant? That's his number 1 priority as a corner. I guess the passing aspect of a QB is insignificant, too. The turnovers are overrated imo. He caused 5-6 turnovers. That's only 5-6 plays in an entire year. I'd rather have a shut down corner that doesn't give up plays in the passing game and doesn't cause 5-6 fumbles all year over a mediocre corner that caused 5 fumbles throughout the season. As far as Norwood, the honey douche didn't make the tackle or stop the play. The sidelines made the stop. Norwood made the catches over the honey douche and then KN went out of bounds. On the biggest stage in college football, when the game was on the line, he couldn't stop a WR from making plays. A WR that only had 7 catches all season before the BCSNCG. When you can't make plays on WRs as a corner, and you don't make an impact in the return game or cause a fumble you're irrelevant. The opinions of most people are correct, he's a great punt returner and he's good at causing some turnovers, mostly by stripping the ball from behind. But's he's an undersized mediocre CB in coverage.

Shut down corner was insignificant. He could cover fine. He couldn't shut down big receivers. Rarely did he blow his assignment.

Those 6 forced fumbles and his ints and punt returns were a big reason why they won. Not his coverage ability. Hence my saying that his cover ability is insignificant as a loss cause it not a loss.

2 biggest myths about LSwho: 1. Tyrann wasn't a good cover corner so he won't be missed; 2. Metternberger is a huge upgrade from Jefferson.

    1. Tyrann was a very good defensive player last year. The cover corner aspect of what he did is so insignificant compared to the turnovers that he created that it seems silly to bring up. While he struggled to stop Norwood from catching passes he also wasn't blowing coverage. He made the tackle for the most part. Lots of DBs struggle to stop a well thrown pass. The key is to not let a 12 yard gain become an 80 yard gain by being stupid in coverage. I felt like Tryann did a decent job in that regard. Matter of fact, it was surprising consider the number of turnovers he created that he was that patient.

That brings us to his turnover creating ability. He was incredible at forcing fumbles last season. So much so that he was 3rd in the nation in that stat. I believe that turnovers were the only reason that LSwho went undefeated last regular season. So, losing one of the best turnover creators in the country is a huge blow to their team.

    2. Mettenberger may have more talent but is he really an upgrade from the QB play LSwho had season?

Jarrett Lee had his issues but the guy never turned the ball over, until he played Bama. Much like turnovers created by the defense the lack of turnovers by the offense was equally as important to their success. Analysts see that Mettenberger can create more opportunities for the offense but he will almost certainly create more opportunities for their opponents because he will throw a few Ints.

Jarrett Lee threw 3 interceptions all of last season. Jordan Jefferson had 2. 3 of those interceptions were against Alabama in our 2 games. 4 of their 10 turnovers were against Alabama.

I think that LSwho will lose 3 or 4 games this season while gaining more yards on offense. They will lose these games because they will not be as good in the turnover battle this season as they were last season which is a direct result of a change in QB and a the loss of the nations best turnover creator on defense.

I get your point about HB but he is worth attacking in the passing game. It is not that he plays badly as far as his technique but he doesn't have great hip reaction. (not saying he doesn't have agility) but you can see from the first game. Darius Hanks was beating him to death with the square in route.

  • Like the OP noted about the QB battle, the CB issue is really about replacement value.

Honey Badger was a Heisman finalist and an upperclassman. While not an all SEC cover corner, it was above average there. The replacement options are a RS Freshman and a true Freshman at CB (yes, they will have a decent return man).

I know that our D is much more complex to understand than Chavis's, but D Milliner made some major mistakes his freshman year and he was a 5* recruit and has turned into a helluva corner. This is true of all freshmen corners - they struggle early in their careers. Experience matters a great deal. They lost not just experience, but significant talent as well.

If you don't think there will be a drop-off there, you are very mistaken, IMO.

  • If Mettenberger was so much of an upgrade at QB. Why did he not play last year?

    bamatomntn

  • Is he gone for good!!!! For certain!!!...atleast for this year?!
Its amazing how many character-bad,talent-good kids in this game get a second and third chance by an all so firm and disciplined coach who understands that the kid is really a good kid and has paid his dues!

  • I think that LSwho and Lesster will revert to form a bit. He has consistently underachieved before last year. He lost 2 games in 2007 with better talent than the NE Patriots. All that said, they will not lose 3-4 but I do see them dropping 2.

I think it's because he was too risky to go with last year. When Les knew he had two guys with more exp. that he could win with. Turned out to "almost" produce a perfect season.

I will make this one point about LSU/Mathieu. Did any one really know the guy before last season?

I think a lot of us knew who he was before the season. He was a big part of their D as a true freshman, and wasn't he MVP of the Cotton Bowl that year. He was making plays all over the field that game.

I will admit I hadn't heard much about him. But I don't get a lot of team info other than Bama. I'm too busy to watch/read every sports related show or article.

  • A lot of people say that. But he put 100% faith in JJ from the moment he put him in against Bama. Wouldn't be an easy choice to just bench him imho.

People forget also that it was only 12-0 in the 3rd quarter. So that nc game was going just like their other games. He was thinking Matthieu would bail them out with a big play.

There was a thread on here last year about this time that ask something to the effect of "if you could take one offensive and defensive player from an SEC team to play for UA this year who would that be". A few people including myself said TM7 for D. He blew up at the end of the season and I thought he would have a breakout year.
