Lots of Gruden to Tennessee smoke.....

  • And I mean lots. A couple different Vol boards (8th Maxim and Volnation) have moderators reporting that Gruden has agreed to be the next coach. Definite HR hire if true but pretty hard to believe.

Edit: Looking like a bunch of bs.

  • Hard for me to believe that. Especially if he was offered the Notre Dame job and didnt take it.

It's very hard to believe. I guess we'll see.

  • Yeah......here's the thing about that: as of right now, the head coaching job at Tennessee is occupied.

"has agreed to be". haha no way. He is under contract with ESPN and MNF. If he has "agreed" it would leak out.

Gruden is extremely good at his current gig, and ESPN has absolutely hooked him up with his QB club, etc. Tennessee would have to pull out all the stops to hire him, if if he was a GA there and his wife wants to move back. I'll have to see it to believe it.

Buuuuut, if Gruden does go there, players will be lining up to play for him. Kids love him, and know they he has all the connections.

  • Pretty sure I read this exact post when they tried to hired Muschamp who turned them down and then hired Dooley.

I don't know why Gruden is the crazy BS name that comes up.

Personally I seriously doubt he would do that well in college after such a long absence anyway.

  • Mod on VolNation:

"I have full confidence that an agreement has been reached. It's done.

Jon Gruden will be the next head football coach at the University of Tennessee."

  • I'll believe this when they hold the press conference.

This guy will either reach Walls status or look like a fool.

It's about talent, and Gruden would get it. Gruden would put great coaches, etc. around him, so that he could focus on what he does best. Look, I'm no Gruden homer, but I wouldn't discount his possible success as a collegiate coach.

  • Has the man ever coached a down in college or recruited a single player? Not sure why everyone believes he is this dream coach. Sure the man works hard but not sure if he is fit for the college game.

  • My father-in-law is a big vol supporter. He said last night there was no way UTk could hire Gruden because they were broke. Something about UTk's biggest booster Jimmy Haslam, CEO of Pilot Corp, just purchasing the Cleveland Browns for a billion. I thought 10rc had deep pockets.. who knows..

  • Gruden is not a college coach. He worked his teams non-stop in the NFL and would never be satisfied with the practice schedule or the lack of contact. It would drive him insane.

I've heard that donations were down too because Haslam bought the Browns.

This is a very important point, when it comes to Gruden coaching in college.

putting great coaches around you so you can focus on one thing does not work in college coaching. Ive heard it a million times as a recipe for success but it never works. The head coach of a college team better love recruiting and working with kids.

  • I saw an interview with him where he said he absolutely hates to recruit.

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

  • No earthly idea if he'll take the job.......but don't kid yourself, landing John Gruden would be an absolute grand slam hire for Tennessee. And with the increase in college coaches salaries over the last decade, especially in the SEC, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few NFL guys consider taking the path Saban has. The adjustment from NFL to college is infinitely more manageable than the adjustment from college to the NFL.

    Jawa3hc

  • I hope it's not true because I like Gruden and if he went to tennessee I'd have to hate him.

We ARE arrogant, we ARE better than you and Alabama IS the center of the college football universe. Get over it!

  • So what was the knock on him from NFL teams? I always thought he was a good coach, but usually good coaches don't go through long periods without employment. He hasn't been on a staff in forever! I never understood what he hasn't been named in other coaching searches in the NFL.

I think that has been by choice. He could have had another gig if he wanted to, but he has enjoyed the much lesser time requirements of the TV gig.

its a HR hire but he'd have his hands full trying to compete with guys like Nick Saban and Les Miles. They have mastered the college game. Gruden will take a while to learn it. Its easy to sign top 5 classes like Auburn and Texas. The hard part is working with kids and developing them and signing the right ones.
