Lots of Gruden to Tennessee smoke.....

  • Gruden was a GA and also a position coach at a small-time program 20+ years ago. I dont get how he is the answer. The reqruiting trail is BRUTAL, he has never done that. The strenght and conditioning programs are tough to manage (see Shula)..

Also - he's an offensensive coach - we will chew him up and spit him out. He won a Super Bowl with Dungee's defense, and Dungee probably wouldve won it himself that year...

Anyway - let them hire the guy. He is not the answer, so I am all for it!

  • Good I hope he takes it. Somebody new who's ass we get to kick

  • His wife is an alumnus of tn. That's why vol fans always throw his name around

  • It would be great for the SEC! I hope it happens.

  • If this actually does happen, which I don't think it will, the Vols would get their "Saban", I think that he would absolutly be able to turn that program around in 2-3 years and have them back in the national picture for the first time in years. Every recruit in country knows who he is from MNF, most prob dont remember him winning a superbowl but have heard about it. And I think he can definitely devolp players with all of his NFL expirience. Don't think we have anything to fear in the near future seeing as CNS has his train running at full steam right now, and they are bUTtchugging on a handcar! But down the road maybe we would finally get a rematch of the 3rd Saturday in Atlanta, kinda bored of playing UF everytime we make that trip and looking like thats what will happen again this season..

  • This thread is very amusing to me. During our coaching search our fans would have killed for Gruden. Now just because it's Tennessee they are giving reasons he wouldn't be a good college coach. The man is a good coach and knows football and would be a HR hire in regards to recruiting and bringing together their fan base, and the product he put on the football field, make no mistake about that. Now, I have no idea if any of these rumors are true, seems a little far fetched to me at this time.

its a HR hire but he'd have his hands full trying to compete with guys like Nick Saban and Les Miles. They have mastered the college game. Gruden will take a while to learn it. Its easy to sign top 5 classes like Auburn and Texas. The hard part is working with kids and developing them and signing the right ones.

If HR = homerun, I'm thinking more like a solid stand up double.

And I mean lots. A couple different Vol boards (8th Maxim and Volnation) have moderators reporting that Gruden has agreed to be the next coach. Definite HR hire if true but pretty hard to believe.

Edit: Looking like a bunch of bs.

Nah, its a HR...He'll look real good at the PC...Whether or not he likes baby sitting college kids or kissing the butts of the parents of college kids is another story.

I've heard that donations were down too because Haslam bought the Browns.

My cousin also speaks regularly to people involved in the program and said this exact thing, that their reserve is down to the single digit millions.

Brining in a Super Bowl winning coach that would still be in demand as an NFL HC if he chose to be would most definately constitute a homerun hire.

I have no doubt that if word got out that Chuckie was willing to take the job, their donations would skyrocket

  • I would actually agree it is a home run hire as I just personally would be surprised if he did that well after being out of the game for so long and really never much exposure to the college game. But that doesn't mean that it isn't the definition of a home run hire for Tennessee. Realistically, that's pretty much as big a name as they could hope to get. Will Muschamp turned them down when he was a defensive coordinator.

I think that the UT job is very tough job now. Their main rivals are Georgia, Alabama and Florida all of whom have huge built in advantages over Tennessee in terms of recruiting grounds, academics, athletic department revenue, facilities, etc. Is Gruden the guy to fix it? I don't know but he is a better bet than anybody else they could hire realistically.

  • I'll be shocked if Dooley is fired. If Dooley and his staff are let go. A total of 9.3 mil has to be paid out. Keep in mind the athletic dept reported they have been losing money. RTR

  • 102.5 in Nashville was just talking about it. I did not know this but apparently his wife is a UT Alumni and he was an assistant under Major's. His name has come up for the job since Fulmer left though, along with every other opening in the US. He's the new Butch Davis.

  • You simply don't have your next coach in place before your current one has been let go...it's absurd and as unprofessional as it gets.

  • It's BS.....he was coming after Fulmer and Kiffen as well.

    BuriedAlive14

  • He makes $5mill a year on Monday night football. Why would he ever coach again? Also, check out his career record. Not very impressive. I'm not saying he is not a good coach, but don't anoint him the next nick saban just yet.

Gruden is not a college coach. He worked his teams non-stop in the NFL and would never be satisfied with the practice schedule or the lack of contact. It would drive him insane.

Drive him? He's already there. Remember, he got the name CHUCKIE honestly.

On a sidenote: His wife is nudging him to take the job. She is a utk grad, and is hot as a firecracker......

  • BAMAMANAGER: It's not unheard of. See Stephen Ross courting Harbaugh without firing Sparano. But I doubt Dave Hart is that unprofessional.

I agree that this rumor is pretty bizarre. Tennessee needs to go after a proven head COLLEGE coach. Gruden is not the answer. Charlie Strong and Willie Taggart make far more sense, along with the usual Patterson and Petersen (make them say no first).

  • 9.3 mil is a steep buyout, and JG has never been a hc in college.......they would be rolling the dice again....don't think it will happen, there will most definitely be a learning curve for him......his success has either taken too long or was because of what the last coach left(Dungy)........If I were them I would look up in the northwest corner of the US.
