Lots of Gruden to Tennessee smoke.....

  • And he has a home in Dandridge,Tn which is a few miles north of Knoxville

  • Here are my thoughts on Gruden to Tennessee, or Gruden to any team, college or pro:

Please list for me the players that Gruden has "coached up" during his career. Bonus points if you can name a QB under thirty he was capable of coaching and winning games with, but I'll take a player at any position that Gruden made better as a coach.

Take all the time you need.

  • You know it's coaching carousel time when Jon Gruden's name comes up as being a "done deal" to some college. It happens this time every year in college football, and he has YET to take a college job.

Drive him? He's already there. Remember, he got the name CHUCKIE honestly.

On a sidenote: His wife is nudging him to take the job. She is a utk grad, and is hot as a firecracker......

Hot as a firecracker? Have you seen a picture of Cindy Gruden? Or maybe you were referring to her temperament?

  • There's a lot of insecurity ITT. Gruden is THE best name out there. He'd have a ton of success. I don't much care though because as long as we have Saban, I like our odds.

    I'd hit it.

You simply don't have your next coach in place before your current one has been let go...it's absurd and as unprofessional as it gets.

Unless you are Bobby L and own a college team.biggrin

And I mean lots. A couple different Vol boards (8th Maxim and Volnation) have moderators reporting that Gruden has agreed to be the next coach. Definite HR hire if true but pretty hard to believe.

Edit: Looking like a bunch of bs.

What's the big deal? Is it because he's the youngest Super Bowl winning coach currently available?

Being a cult personality is far from a guarantee of SEC coaching success. Guess Im just a contrarian.

  • The knock i heard on Gruden at Tampa was his offense was so complicated he was the only one who understood it, his Players really struggled with it. If this is true, good luck with that and a bunch of 19 year olds.

We ARE arrogant, we ARE better than you and Alabama IS the center of the college football universe. Get over it!

    Wow, nice sig....

Now to my point, the Tennessee athletic department is in a tremendous amount of debt. Their top donor just spent a billion dollars purchasing the Cleveland Browns. They will have to pay a lot of money in buyouts in order to rid themselves of the current staff, and Gruden gets paid like $4.3 million per year (that might not be the exact number but it is between 4 and 5 million per year) to be a commentator. Why in the world would he take the Tennessee job, and how in the world would they be able to pay him enough to leave his job to coach the Tennessee Vols? I guess anything is possible, but I just don't see it.juggle

Some people bring a knife to a gun fight. Mark Richt brings a Super Soaker 2000.

Yeah I really like Gruden, but I really will have to see him in a college setting. He always liked getting the more veteran guys. Big difference with a team full of 18-23 year olds. Plus that college schedule, and what about that first middle of the night call about your Qb throwing beer bottles. With what he makes and as great as he is at it, no way I'd leave for college racket. And if I did wanna coach and was Gruden there's some very good nfl jobs on the horizon

    Mason79

  • I will say this: I've caddied in Roger Goodell's group in a golf 4 some. Gruden isn't gonna coach again. I can't expand on it much more than that. But it will not happen.

But any college team thinking they have a chance at Gruden is:

    1. getting the fanbase positive and energized.

    2. is making their job look more attractive than it really is. Because hey "If Gruden is interested in it, then maybe I should take a second look at University of So n so.

  • I think Gruden would be a solid hire. However, as long as we have Saban, and they don't take our best assistants, I feel good.

  • I don't post often.... but from someone who has really good connections at UTk....

Barring a total disaster over the rest of UTk's regular season games, Dooley is there to ride this out..... this year and next year. Regardless of fan speak, the upper folks at UTk realize that no matter what, they can't even fill the roster regardless of who the coach is(Kiffin's 2 remaining recruit class) has to filter out.... Dooley is there to stay....period-- unless they lose all of these last games. They expect to finish 7-5 and go to a bowl with next year having a chance to make a small turn around the corner.

It is what it is at UTk right now... its a numbers game and is going to take time. That situation was the worst of the worst there. Going into Dooley's first year, they had 5 true scholarship linemen coming back-- that came from James Cregg, Kiffin's lineman coach at UTk and now at UTC. Firsthand, he said it was a mess for several years to come. He compared Alabama and LSU both having 17 scholarship Offensive Lineman at the time.

Regardless of the fanspeak, and what fans hope for and want.... Dooley is there to stay..... I can assure you that.

That sounds exactly like what Rich from Hoover said on Jox Rountable radio yesterday.

he is also one of the most level headed fans that calls in to a radio show on regularity.

  • I am from North Alabama and my source on that is not too far from me in Tennessee. Unless something drastic happens, he confirmed again this morning.... Dooley is there to stay as of now.

I'm not saying Rich is your source. I'm just saying that there is another person out there that is saying something very similar which lends credence to what your source is saying.

Nah, I didn't take it that way. I was just confirming that it was a separate source to show it's more than one person saying it. It makes way more sense than all of those big names. It makes total sense. The average fan doesn't see it that way, but its pretty much a given.

  • A booster I work with said that it absolutely pained him to admit it, but Dooley with 7 wins and a bowl appearance will be back next year. As far as Gruden, he just laughed.

As stated in my post, I have heard the same thing from a booster. The Gruden situation is being pushed from disgruntled fans and ex players.
