Marvin Shinn transfer

  • this surprises me, to me he is very similar to Norwood and could have taken his spot in 2014, one more year with limited reps isn't that bad, and you never know with injuries...

    anyone have anything to add?

    jmetz75

  • I do. I'm not surprised at all. Let's be realistic. He will NOT be ahead of....

Cooper, Norwood (should he be ready to go this season) Bell, White, Jones, Jones, probably Black. Add in Foster coming in with his potential of course and maybe another. That's 8 players just right there. OK, so we need injuries most likely again for real true potential playing time (baring something changing in the off season and he growing into a spot not seen to date?) Sure, that could happen but if he's choosing to leave, that should tell us fans everything we need to know IMHO. shrug

When your the elite of elites, bringing in more elites every year....some kids are going to give it a real hard go and re-evalutate themselves to see what might be best for them. I CAN NEVER fault a kid for deciding whats best for him is something else than what we as fans would want for him. Wish him the best.

  • I hate to see Marvin go & got nothing but love for the kid. He was all Bama since day 1 & there wasn't any other school he woulda rather attended. But, with current circumstances, he should do what's best for him & his family ... and I think the decision has been made. I wish him nothing but the best of luck to where ever he may land & that he finishes his career strong ... cuz the kid def has talent & seemed to be a great representative of our university. Roll Tide Mr. Shinn and Goodluck

  • I would actually like to know if it's PT why Shinn is transferring. Sitting out a year has never made sense to me and with Shinn being from Alabama, not sure how he bypasses that. I cant think of one transfer that has gone really well in recent memory.

You know, good point. It could be something personal and naturally when its not a automatic starter we tend to think first its about PT mainly. Could be that plus a variety of other personal reasons shrug

Don't forget Falkins, kid could be special with his size and being an EE.

Best wishes to Shinn going forward!

Transfers tend to not go very well because there is a reason players transfer.

I would say that Sims' transfer went OK. He saw action in 12 games and threw for over 1200 yards. That certainly was not going to happen at Alabama and with AJ still here, he would have been looking at a one and done career. I think he feels much better at least have 3 years to compete and play, but some may not judge him as a success yet either and I would understand that. I would say that it is hard to argue that he is not in better position though. Earning Saban's trust in your first and only year as a starter if would have gotten the job in 2014 wouldn't be the easiest thing to do, IMO.

I guess it depends on what someone would consider a success. I think to a lot of these guys, it's simply a chance to play and contribute consistantly. More times than not, I think transfers find that there was a reason for them not playing that can follow them to their next location as well.

I always think back to Marc Guillon, the transfer QB from Miami. Everyone thought that since he was transferring from Miami (back when they were dominant) that he was going to be great. Anyone that watched him in his limited time saw quickly why he wasn't getting playing time at Miami.

  • I would say Seastrunk's transfer has gone well and will only get better.

  • Good points. I just think that at UA now, it's become the Mecca for NFL scouts. Regardless if you are a starter, you have a chance to prove yourself everyday and get noticed, more so than schools like UVA or Baylor. NFL scouts are practically loitering. I've run into Coach Del Rio like 17 times in the parking lot outside the stadium. Seastrunk wanted to return home to TX and has done great. I think Saban trusts first year starters at QB as much as the next guy with AJ and Gmac both winning Nattys.

I disagree. Norwood and Bell graduate after this year, and imo, Shinn would have been our #2 for 2014 behind Cooper.

His transfer was almost certainly related to the investigation of his recruitment that's about to go before the committee. Unique situation.

Edit: I'm talking about Seastrunk and the Oregon LOA, not Shinn.

  • I'm a little surprised and I'm dissappointed, but they all can't play. You knew something had to happen; we are too loaded.

Wish Marvin the best of luck, wherever he goes. Roll Tide Marvin!

  • Kind of strange IYAM. Considering he made some plays in the championship game and looked poised for a bright future. Having new guys like Robert Foster, Falkins and Howard coming in will ease the sting though. Best of luck to Marvin if he really is transferring.

  • I'm told Texas Tech may be where Shinn lands. Demands at UA are unlike any other place in the country. Not for everybody.

And I respectfully disagree. I don't think there is any chance he would be #2. More likely, Black, Foster (well see of course), White, Jones, Jones depending on if both remain at WR at least all would be ahead of him IMHO. Sure, there is always a chance he moves up. That's what good players do over time. However, its telling me everything I truly need to know if he's decided moving on is best for him...baring it being only for personal reasons of course.

Players of this talent level don't leave the best program in the country if they believe they have any shot at playing (again IF that is what's most important to them). Now if this is also about others reasons than just playing time, none of this matters anyways.

  • Here is why I am not surprised. And its not a very good one, but I have been thinking about this moment ever since it happened. What moment you ask? Shinn was the WR helping block for TJY game winning TD against LSU. He was the one closest to the goal line when TJ scored. His reaction when TJ scored was the same as if the QB was sacked on a play in which he went out for a pass for. Why did that bother so much after the fact? It didnt really, but I never knew why that stuck with me. I dont know, all I know is that after I seen the replay of one of the greatest plays of the season, I felt weird about #80. Not bad, just a little weird is all. I still wish he wold stay and play for us. I cant believe he would leave his former coach comes. I wish him all the best. rtr

Funny thing is, I always watched him on that play and it seemed odd to me every time

He's referring the Oregon/Willie Lyles situation. Seastrunk was involved in that and has since transferred to Baylor.

If there is any link y'all could provide I would appreciate it. I just rewatched it and have no idea what y'all saw.

  • Forgot which recruit said it, but he said "when you sign with Alabama you know next year they are trying to sign someone better than you to take your place". Paraphrase. I think that is very true.
