McCarron made the right pass

  • But saw the wrong defense. This video explains what AJ saw on the final INT last week.

A man coverage that was lost...or was it?

What AJ and everyone else would have saw -

As you can see Kenny Bells "supposedly" man was #21. Stop at 5 seconds and you can clearly see one of the Texas A&M players point to Kenny Bell for #21. Look at AJ, he clearly sees this.

Kenny Bell goes in motion, and AJ sees what everyone would see - #21 was clearly guarding Kenny Bell...stop at 7 seconds, that same player points for #21 to take Kenny Bell as he goes in motion. Clearly #21 has Kenny Bell man to man. AGAIN..

Stop at 8 seconds, and everyone can easily see what the play was suppose to do. Amari Cooper is the key on this play, and is suppose to "rub" or "pick" Kenny Bells man. He clearly finds #21.

This is were everything goes crazy. What looks like #21 being lost in coverage, and behind his man thats in motion, does not actually have Kenny Bell. At the 8 second mark you can clearly see he checks up, and he finds the inside WR, which is now....Amari Cooper.

The ball is in AJ hands and he had already made up his mind. It is man coverage and Amari's man is right in front of him. At 8 seconds it looks like 2 vs 1, and all Amari has to do is step in front of his man....except his man is not who anyone thinks it is..it is #21. Who AJ thought was man to man with Kenny Bell. Amari did the right thing, AJ saw what everyone else saw, and Kenny Bell knew the ball was headed his way. BUT how did Texas A&M run this play on defense? #21 is clearly suppose to have Kenny Bell...Nope..he has the inside WR on whichever side he is on. go back to 6 seconds. Watch as the LB (who points out Kenny Bell) moves to the outside to give the inside man to #21..when Kenny Bell goes in motion this changes #21 man, he has the inside WR, regardless of which side he is on. #24 (who makes the int) was man to man with the outside WR on his side. When he saw Kenny Bell go past the outside of Amari Cooper that instantly became his man.

This was a strike of luck in play calling. We lined up and had multiple plays we could run from this formation. All of them would have been beat except the one we called.....hear me out.

There was no way we were calling a draw play this close to the goal line. We have seen the "oh sh!t" play run out of this same formation...Micheal Williams is lined up for this exact play and this was without a doubt a checkdown play. A&M was ready for that play by putting the LB to the outside of Micheal Williams, as he did stay with him and made sure the play did go the other way without losing Williams.

AJ sees this, and when Kenny Bell goes in motion he is thinking "We got them". What was suppose to happen...they stay slow to moving the movement to contain the 'Oh sh!t" play..which they clearly do, and Kenny Bells man lags behind, as Amari Cooper shields him...easy TD.

If AJ sees the guy stay home he realizes it is a zone coverage and makes a check down to another play.

What we ran would have worked if one thing happened...the ball was snapped before Kenny Bell got to the outside of Amari Cooper. The coverage would have been #21 on Kenny Bell and Amari would have taken his man out of the play.

  • Pretty good job, OP.

I don't fault the pass call on 4th and goal...its the other 3 plays from 1st,2nd,3rd that doesn't fit my understanding of why we wear teams down for 4 qtrs.

But its Western Carolina week. I still think we have a better then most chance at getting a shot at our 15th NC.

  • Call me a puss all you want, but I still haven't been able to watch any bit of that game or much of espn since Saturday night. I think it's like a detox or something. I just can't take myself to that place again. Maybe it's because I'm embarrassed that a football game makes me act the way I did. My neighbors thought someone was being killed

  • excellent analysis, yet it still seems to me that AJ threw that ball off his back foot a little bit, and was too far inside with the ball placement. In rewatching, if AJ had've drilled it more over KB's RIGHT shoulder and a bit higher it would've been a TD even without a great "rub"...

Once again, it's another piece of evidence supporting AJ's injury being more than has been reported.

  • It was the first time i went back to watch this play..I instantly had a thought when the int happened..."What did AJ see? Why did he not at least see if Kenny was open?" This is why i watched this play. AJ is great at checking off into plays, and im not sure if he did in this case, but this was the right play for the man coverage that AJ thought he saw.

  • So basically poor execution. The snap should have started a hair later? Then it works perfect. AJ's in control of the snap right? So, if he waits a 1/2 second longer we win that game and.... So, its still back on AJ or did I read this wrong?

You read this wrong..what AJ saw was Kenny Bell had his man beat to the outside hash. He then went straight to him, when actually #21 was not man to man with Kenny Bell, instead was man with the inside WR. He panics when Bell goes in motion, finds his man and luckily #24 knew he had the outside no matter what. He trusted #21 to take the inside WR (Coop) The only thing that could have changed the outcome was if Kenny slowed down in motion and the snap was taken before he goes to the outside of Amari Cooper. Amari would have taken Kenny's man out of the play, but from what AJ saw (and what everyone saw) was that Bell had his man beat, and he needed to get him the ball ASAP.
