***Monday morning thoughts...

  • Sometimes I wish we'd go back to the old days of recruiting where the recruits weren't rock stars like they are today with everybody over analyzes what they say on Twitter and a bunch of grown men PMS about a recruit tweeting some vague message that they take to be against their school.

  • I strongly agree with your assessment of the prospects for the basketball team. When I coached I always told my players if the game comes down to a call at the end that doesn't go our way you didn't do your job. You should always work not to be in that position although it was clearly a foul on the replay. Bama's hope this year is there are few really good teams in the SEC this year so anything can happen in the SEC tournament. That is always the panacea - play your way in!

  • Excellent article Travis. Should we expect Jr Varsity Day someday in the future?

  • Travis ... never have posted much, but have been with BOL since its inception years and years ago. I and all your followers have adapted to the internet age, and the amount of information is mind-blogging - from following to UA1 religously every day (of course, now blocked) - the pressure on recruits - tired of Reuben, everyone needs to get a grip.
You have been there and we all appreciate your efforts.

  • TR, I have a confession: I spent lots of money on that particular 900-number (glad i could contrubute to your family budget) and while listening to recruiting updates on speakerphone, I'd turn on my hand-held recorder (analog) so that I could replay the information again and again. And, yes, I'd *occasionally* play it back for my best recruiting buddy to hear. Sadly, he's no longer with us. He would be so overjoyed to see how the recruiting industry has just exploded, but also, by how the Tide has regained its national prominence under CNS. He and I visited many Tide practices in the 90s (via the REC). On one occasion, we were watching a one-on-one DB drill that involved your brother. Well, the guy he was in the drill with did something to piss him off and the next thing I knew, your brother started a fight... Somehow, methinks this story doesn't surprise you.

Haha! Actually, that doesn't surprise me at all. And thank you (and your late friend) for your continued support!

The transition from the stone age of recruiting coverage to now has been amazing to watch, no doubt.

Not being able to track jets has made coaching searches tougher. Got a tip from Flight Tracker about an OC candidate heading to Tuscaloosa five or so years ago (when McIlwain was hired) and was headed out to the airport to confirm his arrival.

Well, as me and a former co-worker were approaching the airport, I noticed the OC candidate in the passenger seat of a car coming the other way. Pretty much pulled a Luke Duke, 180 in my truck in the middle of the road and we were eventually able to confirm that it was indeed then Rutgers OC John McNulty in town to interview for the job. Those were the days!

I recall seeing that "former co-worker" wearing a Drive-by Truckers T-shirt, once. Oh, the irony.
