My Dad passed this morning! He was never really a father to me,

He had mental illness and was bi polar so my parents divorced when I was 7. We talked every week but it wasn't like talking to a normal father. The only thing he ever gave me was the gift of Bama football. He was a huge Bama fan and would watch all the games.
I will never forget sitting on the couch early 1970's playing Notre Dame and the boy next door slings open the door and screams " My Dad is beating up my Mom!!" and my Dad wouldn't move until the next play was over!!! My Mom was screaming at him to go and he wouldn't budge! (part of the illness I guess) but it always stuck with me!
So I am a Bama fan because of him. Not only because of loving Bama but because it always connected me to him in some small way. I wanted a normal Dad and to have a normal family and I couldn't have that. But I could have my Dad know I loved the same team as him and that no matter what I would always be connected to him through Bama! It's what we would talk about when we talked and what I will always remember most about him!

Very sorry for your loss Earl. At least you guys had one common thread that pulled you through the tough times in your life. Thank God it was Bama football because you guys had some good things to talk about at least.

The Tide was the only thing that me and my dad were ever able to bond over as well. It's tough when they pass, that much I know for sure, but knowing the state of the program now makes every day a little bit easier.

My condolences. I'm glad you were able to have a positive side to your relationship with your father. I'm sure it was a struggle for you, especially while growing up. Reading your statements, you seem to have handled the situation with maturity and dignity. I applaud you for not allowing bitterness to make a bad situation worse. My prayers to you and your family.

Earl, so sorry for your loss! It's strange just how much football plays a role in our lives ... how we use it as life markers. After the BCS win in January 2010, I lost my father in April that year. I was so happy that he got to watch the game with us and experience that high one more time. Then, I lost my Mom one month ago today, again just months after a national title. So 2009 and 2011 seasons were great years for the Tide but bittersweet for me. Roll Tide to you and your Dad!

Very sorry to hear this story, mental illness is something I've had the misfortune of having a loved one deal with. People don't understand your brain is an organ and just like your heart, your lungs, your kidney...it can fail. But when someone's mind fails, it deceives them, hurts family and causes long term pain and heartache. Through the fog there is still that original person and sometimes you get glimpses of that old personality but I just hate to hear stories like this. You're doing something that few people have the capacity to do and that is taking a positive out of a difficult situation, God bless you and you're family man.

Sorry for your loss. I can totally relate, my father and I have the same kind of relationship. Its kind of sad, but he introduced me to Bama football when I was little. He was a sportswriter in Columbus MS and covered the Tide on the 70's and 80's. He even got me on the practice field in 78 and 79 and I got to meet the bear when I was 12 or 13, got to go in the Bears office with the bear and he even took his hounds tooth hat off his head and put it on mine for a minute. It was a great moment. I was wearing a #42 Jersey as Major Ogilve was my hero back then. Anyway, other than Bama football we just dont have much in common. I am 44 years old now and he is an old man. I love him, but he was never there for me that much, obviously my parents divorced when I was little but Bama football was the one thing we had in common. Im sorry for your loss. On a positive note, I have twin 14 year old boys and they are huge Bama fans and Im a Great father, not just with Bama football, so I learned a lot from my fathers lack of being there.
I have taken my boys to California in 09, (National Champ Game), Sec Champ Game 09
And last years NC game. We are tide through and through, but im involved with my boys heavily, I dearly love them and like my father and I , watching Bama games is a SPECIAL TIME! I wish you the best, I know it has to be tough. God bless you and Roll Tide!
