My take on Florida

  • I have watched Florida in 3 of their games this year and here are my thoughts.

1: They have wonderful talent, on a par with us and LSU. It is a little different in that they are not as physical as Alabama or LSU but great athletes. We all know they have recruited very well every year.

2: Their Defense although not on a par with ours is very good, very fast. This will be the biggest test so far for our Offense. Their DLine is fast and pressure the QB. Their LBers are good as well as their DBs, again not on a par with ours IMO.

3: Their Offense concerns me the most. Demps and Rainey are both burners. They use the pass to their backs to get them in open space where they are both very dangerous. The challenge our D will have this week is containing these two. While their receivers are not on a par with Arkansas's, they are good. I don't think their wide outs can beat us. Again, we must contain Demps and Rainey on the pass to the backs. Bad part about this is with the size of our LBs we don't match up great against their speed. Good thing is our coaches know this and I'm sure they have a plan.

We must stop their run and make them one dimensional which I am sure we will do. Big plays for them is the norm so good tackling and pursuit angles will be key here.

I think we win this one but would feel much better if we were playing them at home. This will be the biggest test for us by far to date in this young season. Looking forward to you guys comments and anything you have noticed and would like to add. RTR

  • Agree. Don't understand why so many are overlooking FL. They are a VERY good team that matches up well with us. Arky's WRs were not the problem. Their OL was. We won't have that luxury this week.

  • I agree that they're a good team, and their speed is def something not to take lightly. I will say though, that the main way they use their speed, is to get into the second level, and use other recievers to block the db's downfield. Good thing for us is how well we tackle in the back 5 or 6, as well as getting off blocks. I personally think we win something like 30-17 or 30-20. I watched them play against UAB, as my cousin plays reciever for UAB, and I didnt come away terribly impressed. JMO though.

UF's OL had a tough time with blocking Bama's front seven last year.

  • We can shut down Demps and Rainy. We did that last year. You just have to force them inside. I don't think Brantley is great, but their WR core is. The D is also stout as well. It's in the swamp and it's going to be a night game. It WILL be louder than Penn State. You can mark that down. I think we win, but it will be a close one.

  • The thing I think bodes well for us is their D front may be fast but they aren that physical. That's why we ran on them last year. The O line will need same intensity as this week and I think we will be fine. Win by a TD. This is the week we need TR to run hard. When we run outside we are amazing. We have to attack them

^^^This^^^ Run the ball and kill some clock. We should be able to handle there line.

  • Pretty solid comments and I agree. I think this will be toughest test of the season and I am including LSU. The DEs are going to cause us problems but we can and I think will establish the run which will force them inside. The secondary is just OK.

On offense I think similar game plan to Arkansas. Pressure with 4, play nickel the entire game and grab a INT or three. That running game is not going to give us any trouble.

  • I been worried bout this game for two weeks. They do like to get their speed guys on the edges but that don't worry me. We will force em to run inside and they not gona have success their either. They not running against us. We'll make em 1 dimensional and that's CNS goal and is exactly what we want. I'm more worried about our offense going up against their front 7. Fl will have the best front 7 we've faced. They will be athletic and have a lot of speed. I'm sure CNS and staff will have an excellent plan though. Just gota execute n we will b fine. Make his ass quit!

  • I'm worried about any team that has talent, especially the talent that UF has. That said, the only thing that really concerns me is that we're playing in the swamp at night.

    VegasTide

  • It's going to be a battle. Tennessee played with Florida for a while and put up some points. Florida isn't there yet. I'm not saying they do not worry me on a talent level and I'm not yelling for a blow out but we are the better team this year.

  • UF runs a short passing game & don't have much of a running game. UT moved the ball on their defense without their only player on offense & Alabama has a much better offense than UT.

Yea that does kinda worry me also. I worry about all of em though. That's just the way I am.we have the better team but the best team don't always win the game.crowds can affect games.hopefully we can go in there and get a lead early and keep the crowD out of it As much as possible. Good thing is,our defense is downright filthy and will give us a great chance to win the game.

  • Bama has done a great job of shutting Demps and Rainey down in the past. They have incredible speed, but they have to get into open space. Florida has been missing that bruising running back for years now, one of the main reasons Meyer went after Trent so hard three years ago. It will be interesting to see, I will be more concerned if CJ is not able to play.

Pretty sure that one of the two (Rainey, I believe) was out last year. This Florida offense is much, much better than what we saw in BDS last season. Without CJ, containing them is going to be considerably more difficult. IMO, other than Donta, he was the one guy that would be really, really tough for us to lose this game. If you recall, UF was his "breakout" game last year, and there's a reason for that.

What concerns me about their defense is the speed of their DL. If they are able to get pressure up front, it will be a tough test for AJ, but I think he's up to it.

All in all, I have the same feeling about this game as i did the Arky game last year: a good, but still somewhat unproven team, with lots of talent, on the road, that was potentially being a bit overlooked over an adjacent opponent (i.e. Florida last year).

  • This aint last year's Fla team...Muschamp and Weis are no joke...Rainey and Demps are playing at full speed...and it is in the swamp. It will be a dog fight.

  • We can't have AJ throw those passes so close to any of their defenders. Florida's guys will catch it and run it back. all 11 of them.

^^^^^ This. We're going to have to be very careful in avoiding turnovers, which we've done so far in our bigger games this season. For some reason, I feel like they're going to sell out on the run and we'll hit at least one or two deep balls this game.

And this ain't last year's Alabama team. And that, to a Florida fan and team, is quite frightening.

As usual, its easy to get lost in the media hype for Florida. "They're 4-0!" "Demps and Rainey are FAST" woah!!

Yes, we could lose this game... with turn overs and sloppy tackling. And lack of intensity.

But if those things don't happen.... well, you know...

  • Saban has always had a plan that was effective at handling their speed backs, although, granted, I think Demps was playing hurt and Rainey was suspended for nasty text messages last year. Mosley is a big timer for us against a team like Florida though, so hopefully he can go. But I think this one is on the run blocking of the OLine. There's a reason that ESPN dubbed Ingram the Gator slayer last year, because a dominant power running game is something Florida has traditionally, including the last two years, struggled to defend. So I think if Trent and Eddie get some creases we should win comfortably. I know Muschamp will make them more physical on D eventually, but it's hard to change decades of culture in the first five games. We might see some deeper throws early from AJ to pull their 7th and 8th guys out of the box and clear up running room. If we can't run effectively though, it could be a dogfight, although they still have to score against our D. But that's the type of game that could be decided by special teams and that's a dangerous game against UF's abilities to return kicks and flip the field. We'll need long, sustained drives, just like we've always used to beat the Gators, and that's why we need the best game of the year so fat in our rushing attack. And we'll also need to be opportunistic about turnovers - no more dropped INTs. That's the way to quiet down an intimidating crowd. I'm a bit nervous because four of our TDs against Arkansas were on long plays (FG audible, INT return, brilliant punt return, and a 61-yard screen pass), three of which were unusual plays, and those big plays will be harder to come by against Florida's speed, but I still expect to win. It's just going to be tough, probably our toughest game of the year along with LSU at home. We win this one comfortably and I don't care who LSU and Oklahoma have beaten, we're the best team in CFB, not only this year but in quite a while.

All potential negatives aside, it's nice to know that they are freaking out 10x worse than us at the prospect of dealing with our NFL defense: Hightower, Upshaw, Barron, Dre, Lester, Chapman, Williams, Nico, Menzie, Milliner, Mosley (hopefully), Dial. (Not trying to leave anyone out, just wanting to hit the potential first-rounders (g).) RTR and let's go do what Saban does best, beat Florida.

He's been getting closer...that one to Maze last week was off by six inches...but I agree, this would be a good time for AJ to hit his stride on the intermediate/deep throws. He looks like he's almost there to me.
