NBA team to bham

  • I know people are going to flame but someone started a twitter account @NBAbirmingham and people are retweeting and loving the idea.. Almost 700 follows in less then a day.. Support the idea it would be so much fun to have Bama fans auburn fans and Uab fans all cheering as one! Just think d wade and people like that in Bham! It's a long shot but we can dream!

  • Raleigh will get one before bham. However I'm all for it.

  • I'd be all for it as well but I'd rather have an NFL or MLB team before an NBA franchise. However, our size and proximity to Atlanta probably means none will happen in my lifetime.

We ARE arrogant, we ARE better than you and Alabama IS the center of the college football universe. Get over it!

This is actually why having an NBA team (or any other professional team) in Bham would never work. I think it's impossible for Bama and Auburn fans to unite to support one team.

  • Lots of naysayers as usual saying it will not work. Birmingham has never had an NBA team so no one really knows if it would work or not. People for whatever reason always like to hate on Birmingham.

  • Backwards thinking as usual

  • I live in Birmingham and would support the team. Having said that, I wonder how many other NBA fans are here in the area? Some for sure, but enough to support 41 nights per year? Are there enough hotel rooms and enough infrastructural accomodations to handle excess traffic etc? Moving the baseball team downtown helps and building the Westin Hotel will offer some additional hotel rooms. Other small market "NBA Only" teams like Utah and Portland have supported franchises but here in the south, where football is king, not so much...would love to see it though!

  • Birmingham is as safe as Memphis. Birmingham has supported other franchises and the leagues folded not the Bham team. Alabama will support a winner. It will have nothing to do with Bama/barn. You put a competitive team on the floor and they will support. ATL sports suck. I like the Yankees and Celtics and go to ATL To see them. The crowd is at least 50/50 everytime. Also, people would come to see the other teams. I would go everytime they played Boston (albeit to cheer for Boston), Miami, LA, OKC, etc. this state needs to do get behind something and get out of the dark ages. If Memphis and OKC can support a team, no reason Bham can't.

  • The precursor to getting an NBA team may be to show the demand is here. They need to come up with the "Bama Jam" or something like that where its an existing pre-season college tournament setting. You could have UA, AU, UAB and one other state college like USA all host a game on a Thursday and at the same time eight teams play at the Civic Center from noon to 10pm. Then on the Friday have the eight winners play all day at the CC and then on Saturday the four winners would play to produce a Tournament final on Sunday. This should have been going on for at least the last decade to get a meaningful Bball presence from the medias' standpoint.

  • I for one would love to see the NBA come to Bham. I could see this happening before an NFL team. JMO

  • I remember reading an article where it listed Birmingham as one of the NBA's largest viewer markets, so the fan base is obviously here. Believe it or not, this state isn't all about Bama/Auburn the way its portrayed. A successful team would thrive here.

  • Birmingham is nearly impossible to work with from a business standpoint. Until they change the way they operate Birmingham is never going to amount to much. I know this first hand. They make it impossible to get things done.

Memphis is the smallest market in the league. Birmingham is the 14th ranked non-NBA TV market. Memphis was 20th in the league in attendance. Atlanta was 23rd.

Successful teams would thrive in many places. The question is, would Birmingham support a team during mediocre to poor years, which would inevitably come? Probably not.

Getting an NBA franchise involves a helluva lot more than having a bunch of basketball fans willing to go to games.. First, either the league has to be willing to expand, or there has to be an owner willing to move an existing team. Or a buyer looking to start a new franchise or buy an existing team and move it here. Anyone know a likely owner for a Birmingham NBA franchise?

Second, you have to have a helluva lot of corporate sponsorship. Gotta sell those corporate suites, advertising, etc.

Thirdly, you have to have a season ticket base. It's one thing to run over to Atlanta a couple of times a year to see the Celtics or Heat. It's another thing entirely to invest in season tickets. 41 regular season games, plus exhibition.

I don't see Birmingham ever getting an NBA franchise. Ever.

Nba team could turn around the whole city. If Memphis can pull it off we sure can.. And bham has more people then okc.. I don't know people are so nagative all the time on here?

Wanting Birmingham to be more than just a shithole will never make it so. And Memphis is still a shithole, in spite of having an NBA franchise.

Let me ask you this...do you actually live in the city of Birmingham? How about Jefferson County? Do you live in Jefferson County?
