I'm guessing this means that if this passes then they can cut an equal number of women's scholarships (non income producing) for a total of 10 total scholarship cuts? So much for the land of opportunity.

So there's 120 fbs teams. That would mean 600 student/athletes a year will not be able to attend college. Ridiculous, simply ridiculous.

No doubt they want parity while not having the resources (or willingness to spend the resources) to have a top notch program. My understanding is this was the reason scholarships were reduced in the past (following years of success by traditional programs like Bama under the Bear).
Makes me wonder how all these small schools are able to influence the NCAA or if some of the larger schools outside the SEC are also backing these ideas.

Not sure who they're trying to keep in check. The best teams will continue to be the best with the best talent; whether it's 85, 80, 60, or 120 scholarships. They're only punishing the kids that can't otherwise afford to go to college - but could go on athletic ability. It is extremely messed up and will certainly harm athletes from poor backgrounds.

Whoever is starting this should be excused from any further service with the NCAA. Go away!

Can we not just say that having 85 football scholarships is a condition of membership at the Div. 1A (or whatever it is called now) level of football?

You want to play with 85 scholarships? Congrats. Welcome to Div. 1A. You get to play with Alabama, Oklahoma, USC, Ohio State and all of the other big boy programs.

You want to play with 80 scholarships? Or 75? Or 65? No problem. Welcome to Div. 1AA. Sam Houston State and North Dakota State will be looking to pound you.

Why the hell do schools race to join Div 1 then moan about the requirements of being Div. 1? There is nothing wrong with lower division football. Lots of schools ought to stay at a lower level. There is no shame in it. If anything, it's probably a more pure form of college football because it doesn't have to deal all of the corporate aspects of Div. 1 football.

I know this is said every day, but we've got to cut out some of these schools from Div. 1. Let's get back to around 80 or 90 Div. 1 schools and cap the number of members. Jacksonville State wants to become Div. 1? Wait for Akron to decide they want to save some money and step down a division. Keep the schools that truly want to be football schools and dump the schools that do it just so the school president can look good when he asks for donations.

The sport of college football has to be the worst at managing its own affairs.

Has the number always been 85 from the time they stopped unlimited scholarships?

Sounds like we need another division of schools. Like FBS1 or something.
