... Gus Bradley recently met with Jacksonville Jaguars employees to provide some insight on who he is and the path he took to landing his current position. During the presentation, a picture of former UA coach Gene Stallings showed up on the projection screen.
Bradley told the audience that he attended a coaches conference in 1993 that Stallings addressed. Bradley, then the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Fort Lewis (Co.) College, was prepared to take notes as Stallings broke down Xs and Os, with the expected emphasis being on the Xs (defense). Instead, Stallings spent his allotted time talking about the importance of establishing a personal philosophy in 30 words or less.
That stuck with Bradley and eventually paid dividends when Pete Carroll, freshly hired as head coach in Seattle, interviewed Bradley for the Seahawks' defensive coordinator position in 2010. One of Carroll's first questions for Bradley, who had just completed his first season on the Seattle staff: describe your personal philosophy in 20 words or less.
Having established his own philosophy, one that speaks to the importance of being genuinely appreciative of those who contribute to the organization, 17 years earlier, Bradley knocked the question out of the park and was retained by Carroll.
Sometimes, it's about more than just Xs and Os and Jimmys and Joes. It's about presenting yourself in a genuine and sincere manner that will convince others you're worth following.
That was the impression Stallings made on Bradley 20 years ago and really embodies the beauty of the profession. Bradley never played or coached under Stallings but he was impacted in a way by the old coach that has served him well throughout his career.
As a Jags fan, I just got another reason to hope Bradley succeeds in Jacksonville.
