Now that we won....

  • Any explanation on what we did wrong with our pass D? Was it just a case of Mett having the game of his life or were we out of place schematically?

I seriously wonder if we have the talent and speed at safety to go toe to toe with Oregon. I know I am not nick saban, but it seems like we need the raw athletic talent of E Williams or L Collins on the field to hang with good passing teams. I love Vinnie but he is a liability in coverage IMO.

Random related thought - How are Sylve and J Washington progressing?

  • Mett played a flawless game. The guy definitely knew where he wanted to go with the ball pre-snap and made quick and confident throws that were in small windows. Receivers made some incredible catches as well. If he plays like that the rest of the way, they end up in a BCS bowl game and go into next season as a top 3 team pre-season.

Everyone has said it before, LSU has everything except a QB. We all knew that if they got good QB play, they were alwasy going to be a tough out no matter where we played them. That 2nd half he had was simply incredible. The guy has NFL talent, he might have turned the corner mentally though. That was the best win of the season by any team.

  • On our Pass D...they had the tight end go out wide and was covered by a corner then had a wide receiver in the slot that was covered by a safety. Safety on a wide receiver: advantage wide receiver.

  • Mett having the game of his life coupled with our defense being on the field for roughly 40 minutes made for a lethal combination. Our offense just could not provide any relief with a sustained drive.

  • Oregon is not a passing team. They are heavily weighted towards to run game.

  • Our DB's covered tight for the most part, short of pass interference I'm not sure what more anyone could have done. ZM's passes were very Garciaesque in that only his receivers were going to make the play. Prolly will be the game of the year for him this year.

This ^^. Saban explained it this way after the game. I sure we will have a fix for it the next time team tries. Plus, Mett just had a Garcia night.

For all the yardage we gave up and the LSU 3rd down converstions, I think our Defense played a heck of a game in the second half. they were on the field pretty much all night and they came up with some HUGE stops when they had to. The stop on 4th and 2 and then the stop to force the missed FG. I have been hearing Bama fans on sports radio this morning on Sirus 91 saying the offense won the game for us. Well they did literally, but hats off and a big thumbs up to our D, because without them, we would not have been in a spot for the offense to take it down and score to win.

How about Pettway doing his Nick Gentry impersonation on the 4 and 2 play? Love the guy's quickness. They had the right personnel in to stop 'em.

  • Sometimes you just have to chock it up to a well called and executed game plan by our opponent. LSU has been wanting this game for a long time, had 2 weeks to prepare, and they were able to execute it to near perfection. Most of those passes were well defended. We, the players, and the media finally learned that if you punch Alabama in the mouth a few times, they will bleed like anyone else. It's a lesson that needed to be learned.

  • They kept us in base defense because early on they were able to run the ball at will with Hill (66 yards rushing at half on only 12 carries, 2nd half he had 17 carries for 41 yards so much better). They isolated Nico Johnson ALOT. They also attacked our DBs over-aggressive behavior with a lot of comeback routes. Even the fade was thrown behind the receiver to take advantage of our guy running slightly faster than their guy.

Lastly we made a lot of poor tackles. Milliner has had 2 straight weeks of arm tackles (though he did still have a good game). Belue and Depriest missed about 2 or 3 tackles each. Perry was dragged for about 10 yards on the Copeland play.

The best example of how we would stand up against Oregon will be this weekend. The biggest difference b/w aTm and Oregon though will be how Oregon is run-oriented through their RBs and not QB. Also I'm not sure aTm has a Deanthony Thomas on their team.
