OC short list getting shorter

Alabama’s search for an offensive coordinator may be narrowing due to coaching moves made by NFL teams, including Atlanta naming Dirk Koetter its new offensive coordinator.

  • The guy from Washington has been hired. Should be announced this week. This comes from someone with direct ties to him.

  • Hmmm... Hope the UW coach is good. Sucks to have two other of our options snakeed away. Can't help but be a little disappointed. The other two must have been pretty good to already be picked up by NFL teams.

Also you have to wonder if this kind of hire will really upgrade or QB talent or attract big time QB talent. I know that was the hope.

Please don't take this as bad mouthing the guy. Just pointing out there are a lot of question marks.

  • Is the guy from Washington the OC there this past year? What's his name again? Sorry I've been away for a few days.

    This explains my point.

  • Dog Nussmeirer. Great hire. A lot like Coach Mac. Runs a balanced offense and works good with the QBs. He will fit Saban's philosophy perfect imo

While Schottenheimer or Koetter would've been good pick-ups, I honestly think we'd likely be right back in this same boat next year, as I feel like both of them would jump at any NFL OC job that presented itself. If Nussmeier ends up being the guy, I could see him being here for 4-5 years like McElwain until a college HC job opens up. He's worked with several guys/ places that Saban is familiar with (Pat Hill at Fresno, Scott Linehan, Michigan State), so I'm sure Saban has a pretty good feel for what he brings to the table.

Agreed, that's also the reason I like this hire, more long term

no it doesn't. had you heard of Coach Mac when Saban announced him? I doubt it! Have you read the bio? I doubt it. I have, and it is pretty damn impressive.

  • Nussmeier has been a QB Coach in the NFL, CFL, and NCAA.
OC at Washington and Fresno St. Offense at Washington has
    been 50/50 Run/Pass.
As a college QB he was 1 of 3 QB's in history to pass for 10,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a
    career.

Speculation increasing that Nussmeier could be headed to Alabama
    Posted by Bob Condotta

While most of the coaching speculation about UW lately has been who will fill the last spot on defense, the Huskies could also soon find themselves in need of an offensive coordinator.

Due in part to events surrounding some of the other candidates, speculation is increasing this morning that Doug Nussmeier may soon be named the new offensive coordinator at Alabama.

Nussmeier was reported last week to be one of three candidates for the job along with former Arizona State and Boise State head coach Dirk Koetter and longtime NFL assistant Brian Schottenheimer.

Koetter, however, was officially hired this morning by the Falcons while Schottenheimer is in talks with the Rams, among a couple other options.

Unless there's another candidate, that has some surmising that Nussmeier will be the man for Alabama, including this report this morning from CoachingSearch.com. UW coach Steve Sarkisian said in an interview on KJR-AM on Friday that Nussmeier had interviewed and that there was mutual interest and that there was a chance Nussmeier would be on the move.

Nussmeier has been UW's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since Sarkisian's arrival prior to the 2009 season. However, Sarkisian calls the offensive plays and also has a big hand in helping guide the quarterbacks. Sarkisian acknowledged that one reason Nussmeier would be interested in going elsewhere would be to have more responsibility.

Nussmeier's hire at Alabama would also make for a rather seamless transition at Alabama as Nussiemer would be replacing the same man he replaced at Fresno State in 2008 --- Jim McElwain, now the head coach at Colorado State.

  • Simma. Did you read my post? Doubt it. Cause I said I was not knocking the guy, just said there were questions.

Could be great, but we don't know till he gets here and does his thing. Just like all those true freshman you guys want to play every year.

  • If Doug Nussmeier is our choice, and if he accepts the job, I think he could be a very good hire. He both played and coached for John L. Smith and Scott Linehan (part of the "Louisville" offensive tree, which includes Bobby Petrino), and by coaching now with Steve Sarkisian, DN has also been exposed to the Norm Chow/BYU/USC offensive tree of coaches. His resume is very impressive, and he could very well be the next hot OC.

Very good points. Coach Mac did a fine job for the program. When I say fine I mean EGGcellent.

Some people's reasoning is that only known names or what the talking heads say are good hires.
