OFFICIAL: SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ABOUT NEW ORLEANS ANSWERED HERE

  • I've already saved a ton of my friends from staying or going somewhere they shouldn't when they are here for the National Championship Game. I am from New Orleans and have lived here most of my life. So, If you have any specific questions about where to stay or go (restaurants, bars, music), post it here and I'll answer it.

I will say this. General Rule of thumb about where to stay:

I would recommend that you not stay on the Westbank. If everything in the city (french Quarter, Uptown, Downtown) start working your way west on I-10 towards Metairie, Kenner (be careful here), towards the Airport (anywhere on Veterans is OK). The places in Elmwood around the shopping are fine, but STAY OFF OF AIRLINE HWY (they rent those by the hour- if ya know what I mean?!)

Hope this helps. Post any questions here and I'll answer them....Roll Tide!

  • I'm staying at the Best Western on Magazine street. Is it safe to walk to the Quarter there? Its just four women so a little concerned about that. Also is it conceivable to walk to the stadium from there?

You couldn't be staying in a better spot. You are right in the middle of everything. You can definitely walk to the game. That BW is right off Canal. There are always a ton of people around there. As long as y'all stick together you will be fine. It can get a little sketchy on Canal late night, but there will be so many people in town that it will be fine. That is a great place to stay....right by Harrah's and the French Quarter. Walk time:10 Mins to the Dome and 5 to quarter.

  • Thanks so much! I haven't been to New Orleans since 1992 so I was a little worried. We have reservations at The Court of Two Sisters for their jazz brunch on game day. So excited!

  • Im staying at the Marriott on Canal and looking at it on google maps it looks as if it's a good location too along with the BW, especially if u say so as well! Walking distance wise (at night) whats the best option for a good steak. I see that a Shula's Steakhouse is across the street from me...it's a chain tho, and I'd hate to jinx us by eating there ;). Thoughts? Tia

    Shula's is terrible....stay away!!!

The absolute BEST steak in New Orleans and honestly the BEST steakhouse in the World is:

    MR. JOHN'S STEAKHOUSE.
2111 Saint Charles Avenue New Orleans, LA 70130
    (504) 679-7697

It's on St. Charles as you head uptown - about .5 mile from Lee Circle. It's a $5-7 cab ride from the hotel, or you can take the street car. It's really close to where you are but not worth walking. If you can go there do it...you'll be thrilled. Everything on the menu is amazing. Best Filet and Porterhouse or Ribeye anywhere (personally I recommend the Filet) - the Spinach Salad is ridiculous and they usually have some sort of special like a Soft Shell Crap appetizer that will blow your mind.

If for some reason you can't get a table....which is possible...go to Ruth Chris right by Harrah's....it's the 2nd best steakhouse.

I believe they are one of the several that do. If you don't have the literature they send you when you renew just look it up on the sherrifs office website. I took my pistol to NO for the 08 Sugar Bowl if that tells you anything.

Yes they do. Just remember, if you plan on consuming alcohol, your ccw is meaningless.

We are staying at Ashton's bed and breakfast on Esplanade. Is it within walking distance to the quarter and is it a safe walk?

  • Help me out, justlike92.

I was in NOLA with some locals, pre-Katrina. They took us to a what I would call a corner neighborhood pub/restaurant. The fare pretty common, but delicious (i.e gumbo, po-boys, muffalettas). The big draw was ice-cold beer served in frozen goblets that went down so quick it barely touched the sides. Would love to go back, but can't remember the name.

If it helps, the restaurant was off Canal about 1-2 miles away from the Quarter. We turned right off Canal to get to there.

Hope that's enough info and thanks.

I would definitely not walk around there at night. During the day as a group you are fine to walk up Esplanade towards the river. It's about a 15-20 min walk to the quarter. At night definitely Cab it to and from the B&B and you'll be fine. Just be careful in that area of Esplanade, once you are closer to the quarter you'll be fine.

Sounds like Mother's - It's one of the most famous Po-Boy places in NOLA and they have gumbo crawfish bisque, shrimp creole, jambalaya ...all the good NOLA food. It's legendary but there is always a line. Mother's is on Poydres which is the big street that runs parallel to Canal (lots of people get them confused.) I hope this is what you are talking about....it sound like it. If it's not and you haven't been before I would definitely recommend it - they have an amazing breakfast as well!
